my first halloween:
rented 'waiting for guffman', bought donuts and these amazing pseudo cookies made from ghiradelli choc/macadamias/honey. planned to ignore trick-or-treaters (we live in the kind of neighbourhood where they're likely to pull out a gun if you say 'sorry, no candy') but no one came knocking!

a good night all round.

and now we're going to spend all day at the alternative press expo.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Saturday, 1 November 2008 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Hey, that sounds like a fun first Halloween!

RR, I have not forgotten about sending you something from MN; I am just buried (and, let's face it, I'm also kind of lame). Hope you're having fun at your expo.

I am going to see a movie this afternoon, in a theater. CRAZY BEHAVIOR

Sara R-C, Saturday, 1 November 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Send her a NUT GOODIE.

Bristol Meth (suzy), Saturday, 1 November 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

RR, way better than mine where I ended up hiding on the floor of our bedroom with all the lights off because I ran out of candy and didn't know what to do

DC Purrman (sunny successor), Saturday, 1 November 2008 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

HAHAHA

that is the kind of thing i would do!!!!

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 2 November 2008 00:40 (fifteen years ago) link

alternative press expo was a huge success: we got A TON of signatures for all these books jordan has, plus i got these two handpainted 'vintage' (i.e. used) handbags. the dude picks up cheap bags from thrift stores and hand paints crazy monsters and shit onto them. i will post pics later!

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 2 November 2008 00:41 (fifteen years ago) link

those are awesome!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Sunday, 2 November 2008 04:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i know!! i love them so much!! they were $20 each, but i couldn't decide which one i wanted so the artist's girlfriend said she'd sell them two for $30 to me!!

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 2 November 2008 04:41 (fifteen years ago) link

bargain!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Sunday, 2 November 2008 04:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Fun!

I went out and saw The Changeling. Pretty dark movie, pretty good, kind of long-ish.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 2 November 2008 05:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i went to princeton to see some family friends' daughter's senior recital. it made me so nostalgic and kind of sad that i dont' sing anymore, but i am trying not to dwell on it because i've devoted so much time, money and effort into my current career path.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Sunday, 2 November 2008 05:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I miss a lot of things I used to do. But tza, at least you're doing something related to the stuff that you're nostalgic for!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 2 November 2008 15:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Also I must express my undying love for falling back. That extra hour always makes me feel like there are 6 extra hours in the day somehow...

Sara R-C, Sunday, 2 November 2008 15:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I can NEVER sleep on fall back night. I think i get too excited about the extra hour sleep and completely screw it up. I finally drifted off to a tivoed ANTM cycle 11 at 6 something this morning.

Maybe to get this election over and done with? I would like to fast forward to actually voting and then fast forward from there to see election returns, thanks. (Or, if nothing else, I could just skip class tomorrow night, I would be good with that.)

xp Zurich! ENVYING

I am also suffering a terrible case of the munchies and cannot figure out what the heck to eat that sounds remotely good. Argh.

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 05:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i just ate an entire container of pistachio-choc-toffee from trader joe's. beat that!

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Monday, 3 November 2008 06:17 (fifteen years ago) link

omg that toffee sounds good.

I am eating some ramen noodles. Hundreds of empty calories, delicious empty calories!

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 06:35 (fifteen years ago) link

But yeah, the toffee sounds better. I admit it!

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 06:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I had fun with Trick-or-Treaters for the first time. We sat out on the porch, drinking and chatting with kids. We tried in vain to find some streaming Halloween music and ended up settling on Hip Hop Nation.

So many kids were showing Obama love it was crazy. He is a rock star. We get a lot of ghetto costumes. Kids in normal clothes with a couple of eyeliner marks on their face approximating whiskers or evil eyebrows. One kid came up saying "Merry Christmas!" haha. We actually had candy left over. Which is bad.

I can't decide if my favorite element in that is the unicorn or the roses, but I'm leaning toward the roses, tbh.

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

so did anyone listen to the Franken/Coleman/Barkley debate last night? just wondering if one of them stabbed the other one in the neck.

NURSES! WE AT FRUIT AT WORK! (John Justen), Monday, 3 November 2008 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I think everyone survived intact or we would have heard about it.

I was busy debating my Dad, who is genuinely afraid of Obama, and also convinced (based on his customers' comments) that McCain will win tomorrow.

I would have rather been at the Franken/Coleman/Barkley debate. It would have been a lot less painful.

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:03 (fifteen years ago) link

It sucks that your dad has teh fear, but am sure his customers are only seeking reification from someone with their own views. Kind of like we do here.

Switzerland = pretty to look at but otherwise overrated.

Bristol Meth (suzy), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Lucerne is fucking awesome IMO

Why on Earth is your dad genuinely afraid of Obama?

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Shd I run up to him and go "BOO!" next time I'm in town?

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Dan, he's totally bought into the OMG OBAMA IS A TERRORIST MUSLIM SOCIALIST WHO WAS MAYBE NOT BORN IN THIS COUNTRY thing. I tried to pick some of it apart with, you know, actual FACTS last night, but it's kind of hopeless. I've always kind of known he was a racist, but it was just an entirely disheartening conversation. (Sidenote: he also loves Palin and thinks she will be the first woman president. UH.)

suzy - you're exactly right about what he is doing with his customers; I did not bother to try to explain selection bias to him because at some point what the heck is the point.

Dan, don't bother to run up and say "BOO" to him unless you are not only Black, but also willing to pretend to be a Muslim. That seems like kind of a hard part to play. (Not dogging on your acting skills here... actually I would be thoroughly entertained to see you stop a conversation with him and say, "uh-oh, it's time for me to face Mecca and say some prayers. Back in five!")

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm honestly to the point where I feel sorry for my Dad more than angry with him. He acknowledges that he's getting his info from only right wing sources, but it's like he's afraid even to think outside that box. It's really kind of unnerving.

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

due to the conversations i have had with customers in the store, i am only barely guardedly optimistic about tomorrow, so it isn't just your dad hearing what he wants to hear.

NURSES! WE AT FRUIT AT WORK! (John Justen), Monday, 3 November 2008 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe it's just that the sort of people who talk to people in stores are all republicans for some odd personality reason, but i'm getting about 75% McCain/Palin from the people around here o_O

NURSES! WE AT FRUIT AT WORK! (John Justen), Monday, 3 November 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Thankfully, for sanity reasons, everyone I work with (minus one person who isn't pushy or obnoxious) is pro-Obama as is most of my entire city. And my family.

But I am still only guardedly optimistic. The past two elections really did me in.

A socialist who's happy to spread the wealth (Susan), Monday, 3 November 2008 19:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I am always only guardedly optimistic, because I'm naturally not an optimist. But yeah, the last two elections did not help.

Sara R-C, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Still have to give slightly more credence to pollsters than to what anyone randomly hears in one spot. For example, if you took my nursing program, I think you'd get a 24/2 Obama/McCain split (and one of the two Republicans was wavering). But for all I know mostly liberals are attracted to nursing programs that are set up for people who have already graduated from college!?!
