Have one for me, chica. xx

We went a wee drive tonight to see the QE2 leaving Greenock on her 40th Anniversary. The whole area was gridlocked so we ended up finding a nice viewing spot on the hills above the town.

This is from miles away and having to use the digital & optical zoom:

Oh I thought you meant the Queen. That's just her boat, right?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I was going to say, "She's really let herself go."

Michael White, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not even her boat, just named after her.

It was one of (if not the) last ocean liners to be built on the Clyde. Today is the 40th anniversary of the launch so it's quite a big deal in these parts, particularly as it's being decommissioned in a couple of months and will become a floating hotel in Dubai.

onimo, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Knowing how many ships were built there, that just sounds weird. :(

Michael White, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:39 (sixteen years ago) link

a floating hotel in Dubai.

I wonder if MJ already has his cabin booked.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 20 September 2007 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey, Onimo, that looks like really near where we were too! We stood on a fence in a car park, the wee viewing point between Port Glasgow and Greenock up the top of the hills. Neil didn't get home until after 5, so we decided to avoid the M8 and even attempting to get into Greenock and came up the back road up near your house. We were going to give you a ring, but figured if you were going for a nosey, you'd have been somewhere anyway, or unable to get anywhere quickly due to traffic.

(I have my home internet connection back on now, hurrah)

ailsa, Thursday, 20 September 2007 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

holy crap Ms. Miz, that's wretched behavior. Jerk.

patita, Thursday, 20 September 2007 22:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait waht? We were standing on that fence!

Eh, when? We left when the ship was just about where it is in your photo, maybe a wee bit before? It was bloody freezing, so we only stayed for about ten minutes.

ailsa, Thursday, 20 September 2007 22:33 (sixteen years ago) link

We were there from 5.30pm until just before 6pm. We drove down the hill a bit for a better view just before it pulled away from Greenock.

Some poor wee retired shipbuilder was close to tears on the news last night. Longing for those glorious days of stealing carpets during fitting out :)

It's hard to believe the Clydebank yard hasn't launched a ship for 35 years. The last one was the Alisa, funnily enough (and I know that's not your name, it's just what people keep calling you).

I think I am having a wee bit of a P(re)ND. Is it hormones? Is it sleep deprivation? Cold? Or WHAT? I just know I want to sleep the daze away. I am looking forward to my parents' arrival which is going to be next week. HURRAH! I am not looking forward to check-up to discover how much I have gained. hah. Also not looking so much forward to pushing baby through my vagina again. hahahah Just kidding. Sort of. :-)

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2007 09:50 (sixteen years ago) link

We got there just at the back of six, just before it pulled away, and left when it was about where you took that photo. We must have just missed you by a couple of minutes or so. Still, at least we got your space on the fence :-)

Baby is getting HUEG and is stealing all yr blood/oxygen/energy.

onimo, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I know! My lung capacity is probably half of what it normally is. I also have a crap way of sitting behind comp, so feel even "awfuller" when breathing. Sometimes I have to stretch and just take a big gulp of oxygen.

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2007 10:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Nothing's wrong with wanting to sleep in your condition, is there nath? Have a lie-down.

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 13:20 (sixteen years ago) link

wow...the QE2 looks nice in that photo. would like a few weeks floating around on that, doing karaoke, or whatever happens on cruise ships.

today I have a terrible hangover, I am good for nothing. I have to interview someone at 4, which is insanely annoying but has to be done. I just want to play Wii and eat fruit and rehydrate myself a bit.

also I wimped out of daily swim due to hangover...where is my discipline!

ps: aldo hope you are feeling a bit better. i guess things like that go in phases, I have had some really low days in the last year or two, and a month or two ago I was just feeling really sad and mechanically churning through every day. but it has passed a lot recently and I feel happy now, not really for any specific reason, though I know exercise has helped me a bit.

Ronan, Friday, 21 September 2007 13:33 (sixteen years ago) link

It's always thrilling to see big cruise ships off the shore here, even though they're nowhere near as grand as the QE2. I didn't see one this year.

Beth Parker, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Over the last couple of years, we've been getting pretty large cruise ships docking in SF. It's not just the size that transfixes me while I look from my rather awesome view at work, it's the piloting all the large ships need coming and going, but my favoprite is still watching the spattering of leaning white sails against the blue-green water when there's a regatta.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Oohhh yes, my childhood bedrooms looks out on a lake with a yacht club, and part of summer, to me, is white sails out the window.

Laurel, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I miss that view so much.

Laurel, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Sam, it's a bit difficult when you run a shop. :-)

I just did the "stupidest" mistake: ordered 24 bags of 16 toilet rolls. hahahahahahahaha Actually I hope I have diarhea so I can use'em at a quicker pace. hahah ALso I said they could deliver in the morning... when the shop's closed and we're at my check-up.

My brain is officially mush. I'm serious.

I didn't get any great photos but it's weird how, of all the amazing stuff I saw in Egypts, I remember the fellucas on the Nile with as much intensity of emotion as anything.

All these boats are lovely. Living most of my life landlocked, I have no such boat memories.

Nath, lie your head down on the counter and put a little bell on the door. :)

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Anybody who knows me, knows I'm not religious at all, but my gf was giving me stick yesterday for absolutely insisting on at least dipping my hand into any body of water when I travel somehwere new. I guess she thingk it's a silly fetish. My first opportunity in Egypt was the day I took that photo. I can remember being in loads of places, Paris, NYC, New Orleans, various European coastlines, etc., but in few of them was I also kicking back on a sailboat.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Water is fantastic! I would think it's very spiritual (not religious) to dip into every major body you encounter.

alright i need to work. At home today to clean house but then I also have real work to do. it never ends.

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, it does, Sam, so remember to enjoy it.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I could never live away from the sea, and it's odd, because I'm not much for boating. I just want to be near it.
Nath, it's terrible to run out of toilet paper! GOOD JOB!!!!!

Beth Parker, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:52 (sixteen years ago) link

enjoy working? I enjoy my own kind most. web stuff not bad but whenever I think things will slow down for me a bit. . .well it doesn't. People always be wanting stuff on their websites. I'd like it to slow down enough so I can stop working at night/on weekends. I miss sewing and reading.

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't you knit, too, Sam?

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I did once upon a time. The knitting basket by my chair in the den has grown cobwebs I believe.

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link

:(

Wait, can you knit with them?

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

If you can knit with cobwebs then I'm in good shape!

Sam, I hope you can get get past this work hump and join the knit nights again (like we've had any all summer, ugh).

patita, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I am coming down with the first cold of the fall. Bleah.

luna, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes knitting again would be good. But work is seriously kicking my ass. Looks like I'm not going to be finished with both of these sites on 10/1 like I thought. And come October I'll be starting on four new redesigns. Count 'em four!

I have to really shine though as I want to be promoted *soon*. Making it even more obvious how ineffective and incompetent my boss is is really my main goal here.

Ms Misery, Friday, 21 September 2007 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Kick ass, Ms Mis!

Feel better soon, luna.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

sounds like we could all use a boost!

patita, Friday, 21 September 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Tell me about it.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I could use a boost. A UTI has me temporarily off coffee and alcohol. I am extremely attached to both substances, on a deep molecular level. I feel steamrolled. Plus my work season is precipitously tapering off, so there's transition anomie.
Waaaah!

Beth Parker, Friday, 21 September 2007 22:46 (sixteen years ago) link

ugh, those are miserable Beth!

http://www.carlmartin.com/Images/Boost%20Kick.jpg

that should do it!

patita, Saturday, 22 September 2007 04:58 (sixteen years ago) link

onimoed this morning. I had to do lots of running around to get my son to karate and drop off stuff for people before I even had breakfast. I think I'm about ready for caffeine and sugar and beer.

My brain is officially mush. I'm serious.

I read somewhere* that your brain actually shrinks when you're pregnant, so think of every daft screw-up as reassurance that everything is working properly :)

onimo, Saturday, 22 September 2007 10:04 (sixteen years ago) link

That's a great picture Michael.

I'm fairly close to the Kip Marina on the Clyde so we see lots of yachts. It's a great sight on a sunny day (not that we get many).

onimo, Saturday, 22 September 2007 10:10 (sixteen years ago) link

your brain actually shrinks when pregnant

must remember to deploy this one if ever arguing with pregnant wife in future. "you can't be trusted dear, your brain has shrunk!"

Ronan, Saturday, 22 September 2007 11:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I read somewhere* that your brain actually shrinks when you're pregnant

:-) Doesn't surprise me. The books all tell you that in the last weeks your brain activity dwindles and you become extremly forgetful. Can it really implode? I think mine did. Thank god I could change the order of 24X16 toilet rolls. I would need an army of diarhea suffering fools to get me through so many. :-) But, yes, brain is really not working properly. :-(

Sam, I'm rooting for you. Kick your boss' incompetetent ass in the upcoming months!

nathalie, Saturday, 22 September 2007 11:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I love living near water, too, although I am so put to shame by all the people I know who boat, fish, swim, scuba dive, go clamming, fossil hunting, etc. I just look at it.

Maria :D, Saturday, 22 September 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I am slightly onimoed this morning, and am conquering this by going to the pub in a couple of hours as it is Neil's birthday and also some friends of ours are moving to Wales next week so we're having a big day out.

ailsa, Saturday, 22 September 2007 12:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Maria, there's still time! I went clamming for the first time last year! It's fun! But you get too many clams, and lots of giant gaggers. It's impossible to throw any back or stop. Your inner famine-year-Wampanoag takes over.

Beth Parker, Saturday, 22 September 2007 15:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I am testing the waters to see if I am fit enough to play with my friends again.
