Reminds me of when we had to take our daughter to Chuck E Cheese and she slept through an entire birthday party while in her stroller, five feet in front of the animatronic loudness.

pretty much going to listen to this song on repeat all day now

I did this yesterday. Might do it today.

Dunno if the J*Davey fans on the thread knew, but they released a freebie ep on xmas day last year: http://jdavey.bandcamp.com/

I'm still waiting for "Dollar or More" to show up in full anywhere. They've been sitting on that song for at least two years, and if it doesn't show up on the next full length, I'm gonna blow a gasket.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 April 2010 15:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I've been meaning to give that ep a second spin for a while

The Reverend, Friday, 2 April 2010 15:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm way into that Yahzarah track posted upthread a bit.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 April 2010 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i originally thought it had nothing to do with the production since the vocal is so outstanding, but it's not like i ever would've been smart enough to know that pop-punk drums way loud in the mix would ever work in a song like this. any releases i should check out?

xp: If you haven't, check out the Foreign Exchange's Leave It All Behind (which features Yahzarah, among others, on vocals) and Nicolay's City Lights 2: Shibuya, both of which are produced by Nicolay and of excellent quality, albeit much more subdued than this. I haven't heard Yahzarah's previous albums, though. I may have to now.

I'm also happy to find out today that there's a new FE album in October. I am becoming such a total stan for them. XD

The Reverend, Friday, 2 April 2010 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

xp- word, one of my favourite songs of the year so far. i bumped the cult of dilla thread a while ago asking for recs of similar sounding stuff and got told to just read the psychedelic rn'b thread. good things happen when this thread is regularly updated.

lead by ryan olson, GAYNGS members include POS, Dessa, Michael Lewis, and members of Bon Iver, Megafaun and Solid Gold.

I've heard 4/20 and 5/11 as release dates for the new album, "relayted"

this sounds like it's going to be some late night, or driving in the car, or late night driving in the car kind of dope shit

That Quadron disc is pretty killer, like a spacey, more R&B version of Roisin Murphy. Love love "Buster Keaton."

it kinda has Stankonia syndrome, you know, where anything place after "Bombs Over Baghdad" sounds kinda lame no matter how good it is. except "Why Dontcha Call Me No More" is track #2

Are any samples of this online aside from the single (which is fantastic)? I can't wait to hear more of this one; is it really that weird?

Anybody have any thoughts on How To Dress Well? The upcoming album, Love Remains, is very lo-fi and at times very ambient, but it's really deeply grounded in R&B. Very interesting hearing some of these melodies and phrasings in the context of a experimental record that sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom.

I'm glad Jordan bought it to my attention that their was a neo-soul type thread on ilxor.

Here were the videos I posted on a previous newish thread which basically covered the same subject. I hope people won't mind the reposting of videos. In the last post I mentioned to the user of proto neo-soul and put in three videos of those artists critics claimed actually started neo-soul rather than Erykah Badu and D'Angelo. I feel like these artists were far more edgier than the "first wave." I also spoke on the limited access of finding new neo-soul music. In the US we ahve TV 1 and Centric but you have to pay for those channels. There is also a website called soulbounce.com but they are very pretentious and think mainstream r&b sucks. I would only go there for the music suggestions and not their writing because it is really bad.

Here are the videos I mentioned:

Me'Shell NdgeOcello - If That's Your Boyfriend
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpdzEpGIqtY

Groove Theory - Tell Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THtqUDitQ4I&ob=av2e

Joi - Sunshine and the Rain (very rare video that recently surfaced)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7FIfpdNEuY

I gave this video as transition from "proto-" to "first wave":

D'Angelo - Lady (remix)

i love these two trax that fit here

ahu is a turkish singer based in london who does a lot of stuff with sideways hip-hop producers like mr beatnick, soundspecies - i love her voice, it's so smoky

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiAXKFTNfOc

suspect this one's going to be big - posted it last week on the uk urban pop thread but it fits better here. i think it's co-produced by burial. jamie woon is great, he was also on subeena's "solidify" last year...

"Night Air" is awesome. Can't decide whether I like the original or the Ramadanman remix more.
