amazing that its been 4 or 5 years since i was really into these books and the next one's still not out...dude isn't gonna finish the series is he :(

it's definitely good tv series material though if they're willing to run it out long enough and don't try to cram each book into a single season (the 3rd book alone is like as long as the entire lord of the rings iirc)

ciderpress, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:39 (4 years ago) Permalink

you think they ought to make it longer? u mad

thomp, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:42 (4 years ago) Permalink

not necessarily make it longer, just not do 1 book = 1 season when the books are of varying length and plot complexity (4th book could be cut down by a ton for example to make room for more stuff from the 3rd book)

ciderpress, Saturday, 27 March 2010 16:53 (4 years ago) Permalink

They could just do more episodes for the season w/ the 3rd book. I don't see how they could split it up though.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 27 March 2010 17:37 (4 years ago) Permalink

Gobbled up all the books on the recommendation of ILXors. I'm looking forward to the HBO show, but mostly I just want the new book! And then I guess there are two MORE of these books that he has to write, in-between blogging about the Jets and going to fantasy conventions? Sigh...

The Wire had a significant gap between seasons 3 and 4, but that was partly because they weren't sure if they were going to renew it.

Gee, Officer (Gukbe), Sunday, 20 June 2010 14:25 (4 years ago) Permalink

at this point, I am wondering if it might not be better if some talented cable TV writers finished this thing for him. I am losing faith that he has any idea where he is going with these books.

I hope this starts a trend of classy TV fantasy adaptations. Someone should do Perdido Street Station (though would be fucking expensive). Do these books have monsters and magic and shit, or is it just guys fighting with swords?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Monday, 13 September 2010 15:44 (4 years ago) Permalink

They have dragons and undead.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:06 (4 years ago) Permalink

only in the first and last episodes of this season though, that saves you some money right there

thomp, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:13 (4 years ago) Permalink

perdido street station feels basically like a miniseries already! which is unfortunate in that the other bas-lag stuff wouldn't really work as further series of.

Looks nice and wintry

Number None, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 01:01 (4 years ago) Permalink

Wasn't the guy in the first scene of the trailer also in the Lord of the Ring movies? I guess all "serious" fantasy movies/series now have to look kinda murky with muted colours, since LotR did that. Will anyone make a colourful fantasy movie anymore?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:41 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah thats sean bean... ive been reading the first book and im not a fantasy guy at all but its p. good... a lot of the early parts of the story take place in a wintery shithole, which limits your color choices... plus its kind of 'gritty' fantasy and they wanna convey that style/mood...

lotr movies were pretty colorful imo, like that part where they're in elfburg and the dwarf goes AND U HAVE MY AXE... lots of stuff actually... its just the color palette changes depending on context... i mean what do you want dude, rainbows over mount doom..

Well, not necessarily, of course it depends on the story... It's just that every recent live action fantasy seems to have had a similar muted colour palette as LotR, as if gritty fantasy was suddenly the only choice. For example, based on the trailer the Avatar The Las

It's just that every recent live action fantasy seems to have had a similar muted colour palette as LotR, as if gritty fantasy was suddenly the only choice. For example, based on the trailer the Avatar The Last Airbender movie has the same kind of look even though the source material is actually quite colourful and fun.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 12:10 (4 years ago) Permalink

have you read the books? if there is one story that needs to look "gritty", it's this one.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:45 (4 years ago) Permalink

So is each season going to be one book?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:49 (4 years ago) Permalink

God, I hope not. To me the best way to do it would be to break it down and rearrange in a linear timeline. Jump around between characters, like any good television drama with a ton of characters tends to do.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:53 (4 years ago) Permalink

Anyone catch Marco Polo on Netflix yet? Clearly going for the Game of Thrones boobs & battles formula - but it feels like it might be an OK timewaster for December based on the first couple of episodes.

Yeah I don't know - it just seemed like a big dumb campy epic from the first couple of episodes.
