This thread, as with analysis of soil stratum, reveals the essence of ILM: musical pedantry, jokes about gay men and unadulterated Creed hate. Don't we just love it?

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 1 September 2003 09:25 (twenty years ago) link

But who exactly do you all hate more. Creed or Dave Matthews Band?

U2 Fan, Monday, 1 September 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

(no offence to Ned, his is hot)

Aw, well thank ya.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:55 (twenty years ago) link

Creed claim to be christians. Christians & Jocks & Mullets. Says it all really.

DMB Fan, Monday, 1 September 2003 15:37 (twenty years ago) link

I have not heard very much Dave Matthews, and therefore can't really comment. I feel you should all know this.

Dave Matthews Band To Rock Central Park

The day after Dave Matthews' releases his RCA solo debut, "Some Devil," the Dave Matthews Band will play a benefit show in New York's Central Park that is expected to draw upwards of 100,000 people. Full details of the Sept. 24 event will be announced Friday (Sept. 12).

America Online is sponsoring the show and is using it to hype the newest version of its software, AOL 9.0. The concert, which RCA will tape for an immediate DVD and CD release, will be held on the park's Great Lawn and will raise funds for the AOL Concert for the Schools! program, which will benefit The Fund for Public Schools of New York City and the Music Resource Center in DMB's homebase of Charlottesville, Va.

Tickets are free and can be obtained through AOL and DMB's official fan association, the Warehouse. Donations of at least $25 are requested and all seats are general admission. The band is also offering Warehouse/fan club members "preferred viewing section passes," which includes access to a backstage barbecue picnic and an exclusive viewing area on the Great Lawn

"Some Devil," which features guest appearances from regular Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds and Phish's Trey Anastasio, will kickstart a busy season for Matthews-related releases. According to a source, a CD/DVD of the Central Park show will be released in November, followed early next year by a three-DVD/six-CD collection taped at the band's three-night September 2002 stand at the Gorge in George, Wash.

Dave Matthews Band is the GREATEST band ever. There is so much to listen for in his songs. He is not like that crappy rap stuff were it all sounds the same. There is so many different types, of music in the band. They actually have the right to call themselves a band. There is so much tallent between Dave, Stefan, Carter, Leroi, and Boyd. No other band right now has as much talent as those guys. If there is I would like to know who. Just by the variation in their music should tell you how great of a band they really are.

I hate them because my entire neighborhood has been shut down so they can do a concert!!! You'd think Dave Matthews was the President.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:06 (twenty years ago) link

Well...he should be.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

I wonder what his policy is on Iraq.

"hike up your burqua a little more, show your oil to me"

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

His political views are in here somewhere, probably in numerous bloody piles from being picked apart and criticized by the fiends of ILM. They're far more practical than Bush's if I remember correctly.
I think all earnings from that concert go to NYC schools or something, so the cause may be worthy of having your neighborhood shut down for a night.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

Not really, the schoolkids here are assholes.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

Well maybe some more cash in their pockets will change that, no?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 21:05 (twenty years ago) link

ally otm about nyc schoolkids being assholes

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 21:17 (twenty years ago) link

There is a superfluous "nyc" in that sentence.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

yes, this is a big benefit for NYC schools (though I'm not sure how the money collected is going to compare to the $50M Bill and Melinda dropped for charter schools last week). and it's also a massive promotion for some new AOL campaign. ah, synergy.

Dave did put a vague, Rodney King-ish statement opposing the war on his website a few months ago.

(as something of an "old" DMB fan - from the minarets era if that means anything to our googlers - and ILX irregular, one day I'll post something here. but not today.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 21:37 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, yeah, cos the million that AOL Time Warner is donating for this concert is really going to find its way into making schools a better place for kids and not into the pockets of NYC bureaucrats, not at all!

FYI the amount of manpower etc being used up to block down all the damn streets just in case--GASP--a nonticketholder for the Dave Matthews event tries to get near the park to--GASP--hear Dave Matthews is probably negating a similar amount of money out of the city coffers. There is absolutely no fucking reason for the amount of security going on right now. There are concerts in the park ALL THE TIME and this is the first time I've ever seen this.

I'm kind of hoping that this bullshit was the call of AOL Time Warner and NOT Matthews, because if Matthews insisted on this, he's a dick. You can't even enter the park unless you go all the way up or all the way down, because, again, god forbid a nonticketholder (to a FREE event, wtf?) hears the, uh, dulcet tones of the Dave.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 25 September 2003 00:12 (twenty years ago) link

Well...he should be [elected president].
I promise, If elected, to make legalize both contact highs (*crowds roars with appoval*) and date rape (*crowds pauses, and a few frat boys roar with appoval*)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 25 September 2003 10:31 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway I'm not knocking their concert really, it was a joke but if people are going to be all bloody serious about it, you might as well know the truth about the whole shenanegans. It was mentalism! I could get into the UN easier than I could've gotten into the park yesterday.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 25 September 2003 12:05 (twenty years ago) link

There are concerts in the park ALL THE TIME and this is the first time I've ever seen this.

To be fair, they really don't have full scale rock concerts on the Great Lawn very often at all. This isn't anything like Summer Stage, you know.

How was it a few years back when Garth Brooks played there?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 25 September 2003 19:43 (twenty years ago) link

Garth Brooks played there? I obviously had no difficulties as I don't recall it happening.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I bet there was a bit of confusion in NYC last night. Heard something of 90,000 people, largest concert ever. Yikes.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 25 September 2003 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, there was a massive Garth Brooks show there back in the late 90s, it was a really big deal. They have classical concerts on the Great Lawn fairly often, but the enormous pop concerts come only once in a while. The notable mega-shows that they've had in the past on the same scale have been Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand.

There's no need to get too whiny about it. It's just a special occasion.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 25 September 2003 21:41 (twenty years ago) link

yeah Ally stop harshing people's mellow

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:09 (twenty years ago) link

I could get into the UN easier than I could've gotten into the park yesterday.

The reasons for that scream for a thread. Anyhoo, mix free music and a huge space with nice weather, and you'll always get mentalism. (God forbid if you were actually trying to get exercise, there!)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:14 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe I skipped that Garth show; I totally forgot about that.

No comments on Dave's solo effort? I am saddened (by the solo effort, not the lack of comments).

Now by Queertin Tortillini:
"KILL DAVE, VOL 1"
Starring Uma Thurman as the chick who repeatedly kicks Dave Matthews in his goolies for three hours straight.
Lucy Liu as the chick who repeatedly bashes Dave Matthews in his head with a ball peen hammer. and
David Carradine as the guy who sits on the sidelines in an easy chair and laughs about it.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

Um. I'm sorry I said anything now.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

Ok, I'm pretty sure you haven't actually listened to the solo album, don't knock it until you've heard it. It's unlike anything he's done with the band, and maybe you'd like the new sound.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:11 (twenty years ago) link

I've heard good reviews of it from people who hate Dave Matthews. Still, I'm doubtful that I will listen to it. .. But I'm also doubtful that I'll listen to the new Cure record or Lou Reed's The Raven anytime soon.... More of a matter of spending time wisely than being closed-minded.

Still, Dave suxor!

As this thread takes fer fucking ever to load, I found myself reading some of the banter toward the top - I think everyone needs to read this thread again, as it's completely hilarious. And it deserves some kind of award - A Pulitzer, A Peabody or two, maybe a Tony or the Nobel Prize for ... uh, guffaws (new category?)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 11:00 (twenty years ago) link

I'm really only commenting on "Gravedigger", which does the neat trick of being DMB filtered through the eyes of a high school goth.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

For the love of God why won't it die?!!!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

Because it is pumped to the gills on my new formula!

Dr Herbert West (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

Then it's a good thing the rest of the album sounds nothing like Gravedigger. Put your DMB generalizations aside for a moment and have a listen. You still may not like it, but at least you'll have some sort of backing for your insults.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:25 (twenty years ago) link

B-b-but I still haven't run out of insults for "Gravedigger" yet!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:31 (twenty years ago) link

I have to admire your patience here, Allison. (As for me, taking the time to listen to a Dave Matthews solo album is quite low on my priority list.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

Well then, don't stop now, Dan.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:57 (twenty years ago) link

wow is this the longest running thread ever on ILM (Jay-Z vs. Nas aside...?)
