Want Jack Purcells for summer, but apparently they're not made in a size 14. Bastards.

Oh yeah, I was eyeing similar tretorns when I bought the Generic Surpluses. Tretorn seems like kind of a great shoe company.

six months pass...

I got some dsquared sneakers. Hurt like fuck but they are super great to look at. lol

Bought a pair of Moma shoes a few weeks ago. Best. Shoes. Ever.

Shoes I have bought recently (actually I think these are the only non-running shoes I've bought this year):

I was always hesitant to do a dressier Camper, but these have a more proper-looking sole on them. I may still remove the little camper tag though - kind of corny.

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Saturday, 6 November 2010 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Also caved and bought a pair of toms, which are absurdly comfy.

Was a little disappointed with the quality of the Generic Surpluses btw -- not well-constructed

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Saturday, 6 November 2010 20:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i bought a pair of toms classics last spring & they wore out so damn fast. not impressed

I like the look of those toms. maybe I'll pick up a pair. these shoes are $$$ tho

whiney trollins vs. hipsters (dayo), Sunday, 7 November 2010 02:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i like how toms look/fit but theyre kinda just [....] verz of vans

Lamp, Sunday, 7 November 2010 03:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Mine were like $75 I think? Definitely not cheap for that kind of casual shoe but they feel much better than typical converse/vans type shoes - they're lightweight, insulated, have some arch support, are very soft, and apparently are also water-resistant.

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Sunday, 7 November 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Plus I mean they supposedly bought a pair for a kid in Africa with some of that money.

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Sunday, 7 November 2010 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the look of them. usually not into casual shoes.

rappa ternt sagna (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 7 November 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I still can't buy Nikes somehow -- I think the whole sweatshop thing in my college days just stuck with me, even if other brands I buy are using sweatshop labor too (not Toms, I don't think, but probably others). For that matter Nike may have improved its labor conditions -- don't know. But the association doesn't wear off. Also they don't tend to run as wide as I need.

Nonetheless, those are nice and I like them better than the Stussies.

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

those blue shoes are dr. martens, actually, made for stussy. pretty cool but i couldn't imagine ever picking it over more comfy / neutral options.

got these in brown, for half price:

http://www.sarenza.co.uk/jean-baptiste-rautureau-kentucky-richelieu-s354226-p0000019672

the first leather shoes i've bought since 1998.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

the soles are leather too - i took them to a cobbler and he fixed a thin protective rubber sole on them. he said it would last two years.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, they look like they'd be nicer in Brown actually.

The Campers I bought were like this, although I want to say the brown is darker:

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

They have a leather sole with some camperish stuff on it
http://camper.secure.hoxsolutions.com/is/image/Camper/PIS04202?JGVzaG9wMyQ=

I was assured that they could be resoled later with a standard sole if I want, once they wear out, because I had been burned on a pair of pelotas I loved but could not get resoled due to the weird ass camper bubble sole.

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

(yeah brown is definitely darker, btw)

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

That was why I stopped buying campers, I hate shoes you can't resole. might try those though.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

pro-tip for people buying shoes with smooth leather soles - wear them for a day before getting the rubber fixed to the bottom - the rubber will stick better if you've got a rough surface

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

^excellent pro-tip

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

couldn't you also just score it up with a razor or sand paper or something?

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, it rather upset me - I had this beautiful, thick leather shell with bubbles so lopsided I could barely walk in them. The bubble sole was actually less durable than a regular sole, too, because when it wore out unevenly it was much more detrimental to the shoe. I had justified the price with the "quality" and that they would "last longer."

Kinect: The Body Is Good Business™ (Hurting 2), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

gbx sure but then you wouldn't get to wear your Amazing New Shoes

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:28 (thirteen years ago) link

true, true.

new sneaker day (or new shoe day, i guess) is always exciting. esp since you have to balance the joy of new shoes with the anxiety of scuffing them for the first time. i imagine this is what parents go through as they wait for their child's first injury.

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 8 November 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I love the Amazing New Shoes feeling. I still get a little rush from taking them out the first few days, like I was in middle school. Doesn't happen with jackets or shirts or jeans.

Love those grey suede shelltoes, would totally wear them myself.

I thought those boots were awesome until you pointed out they weigh over six pounds...I don't think I could wear shoes that heavy.

17th Century Catholic Spain (Abbbottt), Monday, 8 November 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I had a pair of knee-high lace up boots that I had to get rid of because they were just too heavy. I felt like a Jacob Marley's ghost thing going on from the knees down.

17th Century Catholic Spain (Abbbottt), Monday, 8 November 2010 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

lol that is almost as much weight as my ski boots

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 8 November 2010 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought spending $150 on shoes was crazy. thats about my limit.

Str8 Drapin It (chrisv2010), Monday, 8 November 2010 21:31 (thirteen years ago) link

They were ridiculously expensive ($450, parents picked up half for my birthday present) - but I wear 13EE, and there's fuck-all in terms of boots I like at that size without going semi-custom. They'll last me 10+ years with resoling and care, so I figure it's worth it - before my feet got wider, I was killing a pair of DM 1460s every year.

I bought via bakershoe.com.

If you wear a normal size, keep an eye on Ebay. I hear White's sells straight from the factory on the cheap sometimes.

This is the thread where I say that it irritates me on a low but constantly disgusted level to see guys wearing great boots but not bothering to lace the top half and letting everything flop around under their skinny girl jeans. I don't even care if they were MADE that way and they in fact have NO eyelets or speed hooks on the upper 5 inches, IT'S STILL STUPID.
