I still don't understand why Tad wants to tear down Wrigley Field. Oriole Park or Camden Yards or Cal Ripken Jr. Shrine or whatever it's called is modeled on Wrigley. It's the best place in the whole world!

(x-post ha ha, Tad in Momus "haven't seen it, actually" moment :) )

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:55 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, but i admit when i am wrong ... unlike mr. currie (sometimes!)

still, the orioles and the phillies got outta their respective dumps relatively quickly. what's the red sox's excuse? it isn't as if they don't have the money, you know!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

The bitter, terrible, fairweather fans like the fucking place.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:01 (twenty years ago) link

Tep you are not a fan, so how would you know? Anyway, there was a proposal to tear down Fenway and rebuild it exactly, complete with the wacked-out seat angles but I think that went away.

Tad, you should go to Wrigley! There are many cute things about Wrigley Field but one of them is that the scoreboards on the concourse are like old signs you would find at a Midwestern high school gym -- they just say "Cubs" and "Visitors" and have the little light bulbs in the shapes of "8"s from which you can make any number.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

felicity -- one day i'd like to see wrigley, i think! but boston's cheaper & easier to get to, via amtrak anyway.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

Tep, I'm really glad you have NOTHING ELSE TO DO AT ALL right now than come on every thread with a baseball discussion and piss all over people.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

Ally, I backed you on the payroll thing, for Pete's sake. I'm not pissing all over people. I find the "the team who lost fucking sucks, ha ha, they deserved it!" thing incredibly annoying (and the "the team who won fucking sucks, ha ha, fucking bastards!" thing is just as annoying), and the more gleeful and ridiculous it is, the more annoying it is.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

yo, i just realized something. other ILXors said that atlanta braves are assholes. WELL, GUESS WHAT CITY THE BRAVES ORIGINALLY CAME FROM?!?

i rest my case.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

ATTENTION EVERYONE: PLEASE STOP ANNOYING TEP

Thanks.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

Calling all of the Boston fans dickheads is obv. very different from this though??

(xpost: "other ILXors"=me!! I more object to Ted Turner and that damn Tomahawk chop thing than anything else though)

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

but tep, surely you understand the yankees-red sox rivalry yes? i mean, it isn't as if the yankees beat the angels (who no-one gives a shit about and there's no history b/w the yanks and the angels).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

Calling all of the Boston fans dickheads is obv. very different from this though??

It comes off pretty much the same to me -- it's all part of the silly "hate the other team" crap that comes along as baggage.

but tep, surely you understand the yankees-red sox rivalry yes?

Obviously, but what's that to do with anything? I don't hate the Yankees for winning.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

I think the difference is that I think this thread has come off mostly good natured and obviously not entirely serious whereas your post sounded just mean.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

I wasn't seeing good-naturedness, to be honest, but which post of mine sounded mean?

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

All of them. You're like Sports Grinch McGrinch.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, I am not, that's just silly.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

so does my brother, a lifelong redsox fan, who is terminally ill and prolly wont see another year, does he count as one of the big fucking loser-boston fans?
just wondering...

half jack, Friday, 17 October 2003 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

well, saying that i'm gonna piss on fenway park and harvard law school is kinda over-the-top and not to be taken seriously -- kinda like the Anal C**t songlist (hey, they're from the Boston metro area!), you could get offended but then the joke's on you so why bother?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

Tad, I don't have to be offended to find something annoying. It's not like I think you're actually going to piss on Fenway .. well, maybe more to the point, it's not like I'd be horrified if you did (you wouldn't be the first, and you wouldn't make me watch).

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:37 (twenty years ago) link

No of course not, that's not what people are saying here.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:37 (twenty years ago) link

Tep may I recommend you don't read sports threads if they are so annoying to you? I think you actually enjoy being annoyed, to tell the truth.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

You guys are all goofy in the head.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

yo NA yankees fans don't like the orioles, either!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

Also I just noticed this isn't really a sports thread.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

;-p

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

You don't know me very well, felicity.

It's not like the entirety of every sports thread annoys me, for Heaven's sake. I'm talking about one specific type of thing, which is generally a minority of posts. (At least on the baseball threads, those're usually the only ones I read.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

I know you well enough to understand from your posts that you are disgruntled by the fact that some people have been enjoying the baseball playoffs by exchanging good-natured posts and I am wondering what constructive mode of behavior modification you propose we adopt?

It is acknowledged from the MLB Playoff thread that you dislike baseball fans and that you don't care to explain why, all right! We got it the first time, no need to repeat yourself. Yes I know you a writer/artist from New Orleans with a tatoo or whatever, I've been reading these boards a while, it's not a wholesale indictment of you.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, if I implied anything mean about felicity, I take it back, cause I like that quick little sum-up of me :)

Not all baseball fans -- baseball fans as a group. Like Ally said on one of the threads, that one or this one, fans tend to be dicks in specific ways. It isn't limited to Yankees fans, or Red Sox fans, or etc. And those ways are aggravating.

I haven't been seeing the good-naturedness people are now mentioning. Maybe it's there and I'm missing it. Mr Noodles or Diamond's post? If that's good-natured, I just don't speak Fan very well, then.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:51 (twenty years ago) link

ha ha Tep :)

That's okay, it's a unique culture, I think. It's just like a role the sports fan plays. "The curmudgeon" is a popular role, as is "the asshole", the "sore loser", and the "person who takes it all too seriously." It's like you can criticize your own family but no one else is allowed to.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:55 (twenty years ago) link

the problem with rooting for the redsox is boston's full of assholes
-- cinniblount (littlejohnnyjewe...), October 16th, 2003.

yeah, this is oozing with good natured feelings, sure.

half jack, Friday, 17 October 2003 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not reading any of the Red Sox forums etc. since the game, because the worst of what's there (from the Red Sox fans themselves, is my point) is much, much more annoying than anything I've seen on ILE. Theo Epstein should be dragged through the streets and strung up, Nomar should be eviscerated, etc., etc. My family have been Red Sox fans since before they were called the Red Sox, but maybe having a Southerner for a father contributed to my not being raised with that aspect of Fenway culture.

If it's just some culture thing I can't get, maybe it's best to leave it at that, provided no one uses it as an excuse to post "Tep is a strategically-placed doodyhead!" and then claim it's part of Tigers fandom.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:09 (twenty years ago) link

Um, so Boston then.

Ned at Martin's place (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 18 October 2003 10:38 (twenty years ago) link

what geeta said
im done playing defense

kephm, Saturday, 18 October 2003 13:28 (twenty years ago) link

Gotta love ILX objectivity, as long as the place ain't Boston.

Usually I would say Boston is full of pretentious, racist assholes and Fenway is an overrated dump.

So, avoid Boston unless I was wearing a Haz-mat suit. Gotcha.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 18 October 2003 16:27 (twenty years ago) link

What about Boston?

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 18 October 2003 16:49 (twenty years ago) link

Some points:

1. The roads in Boston are put together much worse than even DC or suburban Maryland.

2. Nashville has more fun stuff to do than Boston even if you HATE country music, and better food.

3. The only thing I like about Boston, in fact, is Newbury Comics or whatever that place is, which is like a bigger, nicer Kim's.

4. Unfortunately, Kim's St. Marks is surrounded by similar shops full of cool shit whereas Newbury is more like a single shining light in the pitch blackness of bad cafés and hahvud yahd crappity crap crap.

5. Don't EVEN call that thing a subway system. Dear LORD. What is this? An IDM album cover? ARRGGGH.

6. actually, if this thing can wait till December ... 'cause the bills play the patriots on 12/27.

ahem WHO IN THE JESUSFUCKERS would want to spend even PART of their holiday season in BOSTON? Seriously though if you're that much of a Bills fan you deserve whatever you get I suppose. URGHK.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 18 October 2003 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

Don't EVEN call that thing a subway system. Dear LORD. What is this? An IDM album cover? ARRGGGH.

i don't wanna know what tom thinks of philly's subway system, then.

and the jets already played the patriots in NE so that trip's out.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 October 2003 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

Admittedly by spending part of my youth in the DC area and now living here I have been a bit spoiled on the subway front.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 18 October 2003 18:17 (twenty years ago) link

The new ritz people, come the fuck on. DAN PERRY TO THREAD: remember the ashtrays? Holy shit. I promise I won't set anyone on fire this time.

Ally-zay, Saturday, 18 October 2003 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

i'm sure that i can do it in mid-November. if that's a good enough answer?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 October 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

Come to Boston and entertain me!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 18 October 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

The roads in Boston are put together much worse than even DC or suburban Maryland.

I didn't think such a thing possible til I got lost driving in Boston.. in 90-degree weather.. no air conditioning.. no SIGNS for the goddamn detours and is there NO END to the big dig or what? ARGH. And I LIKE driving in DC.

Also, why does everyone in Boston wear ribbed sweaters at all times? Explain!

I guess I don't mind Red Sox fans though (especially in RI). I grew up liking the Orioles but they don't lose in an epic way, so it's less fun. Camden Yards is a nice ballpark but seems oddly yuppified for Baltimore. I kinda liked the old Memorial Stadium..

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 19 October 2003 16:13 (twenty years ago) link

I'm trying to convince Wheeler to come. I'm thinking the weekend of the 15th would be best. Thoughts?

Allyzay, Monday, 20 October 2003 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

What's wrong with ribbed sweaters?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 October 2003 21:51 (twenty years ago) link

Someone just pointed out to me that semi-quitting smoking could very well result in my typing "meanly" without feeling mean, so belatedly -- sorry if anything came off that way. Haven't got any secret plans to kill anyone's pets or anything.

I just sent my mother her Christmas present early: a copy of the New York Post misprint where the Red Sox won game 7 :)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

the weekend of the 15th is fine by me. please keep me in the loop ... i will show up for this thing!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:52 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah how much does a pack of smokes cost in boston?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:53 (twenty years ago) link

For you, your life's blood spilled out on the street, I'm guessing.
