I can't even read Dan Lacey's comics as having the message they're supposed to!

I can't even read them as having a potential message...I mean anything that remotely makes sense or is possible to interpret.

I tried to change that dopey picture of Mighty Mouse in the 'Encyclopedia of Stupid' article today to a actual pic of faithmouse and promptly got banned. It's an inaccurate piece, but I try not to be unappreciative when people promote my cartoon. It also doesn't mention that I've been banned twice from SA by the same mod earlier this year, which is why I no longer post there. I emailed the Encyclopedia moderator and gave him/her full permission to use whatever cartoons they'd like (but please remove the Mighty Mouse pic) so let's see what happens.

Thanks for posting the dictionary article, but it doesn't open unless you have an SA account. If you could send or post the actual text I'd appreciate it. I actually had a lot of fans on SA before I was banned.

I've always claimed the cartoon was art which paralleled but didn't necessarily reflect my views. I'd like to tell you what direction the cartoon will take next, but I honestly don't know. Whatever way I feel when I wake up in the morning, I guess.

Dan, have you ever thought about having large, bold text at the bottom of all yr cartoons that says DO YOU SEE?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Or alt text explaining what on earth you're trying to say?

Mark C, Monday, 12 November 2007 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Just a scene from an animated cartoon I have playing in my head-

Timothy A. Bear, selling chocolate bars to support a fund-raiser for polar bears which have gone infertile because of global warming (tieing into the nude GayBear/Faithmouse/Timothy A. Bear/Ms.StarMole 'Polar Bear Plunge' cartoon from earlier this year), passes a church where super-evangelist Benny Benny is having a revival. He pokes his head in, sees the people in line going up to have an altar-call, and gets in line himself, thinking he might sell a few bars. When Timothy finally gets to the front of the line, Benny Benny tries to 'slay him in the spirit' which comprises of his pushing people to the ground where they just sort of lay around for awhile in holy ecstasy. However, Timothy doesn't have a clue what the play is and ends up getting whacked in the head instead. A fight between Benny Benny and Timothy A. Bear ensues.

Hope that answers your question. I'm considering writing short stories around these cartoons and posting them on my blog as extended entries.

Excuse me, I have to cut the grass one last time this year....

You should never ask an artist what his art "means", lest you receive an answer.

libcrypt, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

My god, it's full of stars.

The minister is among the religious leaders who preach the "prosperity gospel," the teaching that God will shower faithful followers with material riches.

aw great.

Shit, and this thread is nsfw now.

Yes, scimitars, ladies & gentlemen. Thank God they chose to represent themselves as Uncle Same taking a bow.

kingfish, Friday, 30 November 2007 08:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan, I hope you follow their example - because I think if you could find the a narrative you love, you could draw the next Cerebus, Bone, or Sin City. Whatevs. Editorial cartooning, or even just daily cartooning, is a joke and a half unless in direct service of merchandising. Go forth and draw me a book, you son of a bitch.

And yeah, C&F, good riddance. That shit wasn't even nice to look at, much less think about.

El Tomboto, Friday, 30 November 2007 08:45 (sixteen years ago) link

But plz to not wind up like Dave Sim, and use your lettercols to have months-like arguments with readers over your particular views about women, for example.

kingfish, Friday, 30 November 2007 08:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't give a fuck what he does with the letters column, Voltaire's Candide is long overdue for a yiffstyle cover

El Tomboto, Friday, 30 November 2007 09:36 (sixteen years ago) link

With C&F gone and many other right-wing cartoonists being critical of the Bush administration, it looks like the golden age of batshittery has passed.

Also, is it just me or do new Day By Day strips make sense now?

abanana, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link

nope, sorry. check the strip from 12/10. still batshit.

where's Apedolf Bushler?

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Romney one is pretty great, and Al Franken really can draw the lower 48 states real fast.

(I bet many of us could draw the 48 too.)

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I tried drawing them all individually on a napkin and did a good job. My bar buddy could Identify 43 of them. That's a "B" - good enough for a dunken yrs truly.

Abbott, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

West Virginia is pretty tricky, I admit.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I got mixed up on Illinois & Missouri mostly. God they have NO SHAPE at ALL. Kentucky, tho = classic.

Abbott, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Illinois is like a dagger. Missouri pokes holes into other states.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:32 (sixteen years ago) link

They're both kind of shaped like melted candles that were originally crafted by some kid at a pioneer festival booth.

How many wooden varnished clocks have been made to look like Montana? It's even big enough to have a thermometer glued to the side.

I know Sedaris has that story about the Oregon clocks.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

all those ones out west are just squares

missouri got character

dmr, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

It touches more states than any other besides Tennessee.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:46 (sixteen years ago) link

A fact which was drilled into our heads for the two years I went to grade school in Tennessee, like Missouri was going to get uppity and try to steal their spot.
