It's very nice, hadn't heard it before. (And yeah, weird but there ya go.)

Really wish I could find copies of this stuff on vinyl.
Is it really sitting in German thrift stores, like it is in my dreams?

geschenk des augenblicks is the jam.

actually, i must be lucky because i've never heard a bad album by this guy. granted, i haven't heard any of the recent ones.

he seems like an interesting guy. he's like 10-15 years older than the other folks in the first wave of krautrock bands, no?

most everything before 85 is easy to like

love Bureau B for the packaging on these reissues, they finally look as beautiful as the original LPs. already have all the original Sky CDs but kind of tempting to buy them again now

Bought vinyl copies (Sky records) of Dürch die Wüste, Wenn der Südwind Weht and Lustwandel a few years ago through ebay.de for a couple of euros a piece. They're all fantastic, especially in the evening with a book/paper/work to read/do. Only other release by him I have (besides Cluster/Harmonia) is the record he did with Tim Story, Lunz, which is great as well - sweet without being syrupy

Got Wenn... yesterday: so easy to love, like most of his stuff.

major fantasy of mine to be a german hippie living out on some pastoral commune, endlessly spinning roedelius records and celebrating freie körper kultur.

we would dance to regenmacher. any of his other solo material have a little groove to it like that one?

Selbstportrait 2 n 3 are almost always

those two are near the heart of everything amazing about Cluster, really hoping Bureau B proceeds on to putting out unedited reissues. I like Wenn der Südwind Weht, but Fleig Vogel Fliege is even better & has never been out on CD

asking Roedelius in 96 if those two were ever coming out on CD, he said it was impossible because they were too lo-fi for CD. The Selbstportrait 1+2 CD that did come out on Sky a few years later leaves some of the absolute strongest, fuzziest, murkiest tracks off of #2 (it does contain all of #1, though it switches sides 1 & 2 in the track lineup -- I retagged my mp3s, the original vinyl makes more sense)

not many R. ones even have drums -- the closest to 'regenmacher' is 'langer atem' from Lustwandel, and some of the weirder tracks from Offene Turen. the Moebius & Plank (& Neumeier) albums are the really groovy ones for people who wish they'd gone further in that direction after Zuckerzeit, but really, every single album either of them did from 71-84, I couldn't live without

six years pass...

so I've been listening to little else besides solo Roedelius these past few weeks and have come to a conclusion: what I like about Cluster and Harmonia is...Roedelius. I listen back to albums like Deluxe and Sowiesoso and what I hear, more than ever, is Roedelius as the dominant compositional voice, at least on all my favorite tunes on those albums.

No idea what the division of labor was on these records, but is it too reductive to view Moebius as the drifty / ambient guy and Roedelius as the melodic / rhythmic guy?

Wimmels, Tuesday, 17 January 2017 23:57 (seven years ago) link

I thought Moebius was more the funny noises / rhythm guy tbh.

You may be right! I really don't know. The only solo Moebius I ever owned was that Blue Moon soundtrack thing, and I barely remember what it sounds like.

Wimmels, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 00:04 (seven years ago) link

"Zuckerzeit" usefully has 6 Roedelius tracks and 6 Moebius tracks to compare and contrast.

And I adore the 6 Roedelius and appreciate but don't love Moebius' share. But "Sowiesoso" is perfect all the way through.

There's a handy compilation that came out on Bureau B a few years ago, "Kollektion 02".

I'm thinking of picking up "Selbstportrait 2" on CD, the one put out by Bureau B in 2010, but there's an Amazon review that mentions this issue:

There's been a major mastering error on this release that replaces tracks 5 and 6 (Alle Jahre Wieder and Übern Fluss) with two tracks from Selbstportrait VI - The Diary Of The Unforgotten (Weg and Ausgewahlt).

I haven't seen this problem mentioned anywhere else. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 20 January 2017 02:38 (seven years ago) link

I can't speak to the CD audio, but comparing the Bureau B-sourced versions of Selbstportraits 2 and VI that are streaming on Spotify, there is no overlap between the two. And "Alle Jahre Wieder" is sublime, one of his best tracks.

J. Sam, Friday, 20 January 2017 04:02 (seven years ago) link

The Amazon reviewer said the error was corrected in the digital edition. No one's got the CD?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 21 January 2017 22:59 (seven years ago) link

I just checked the Bureau B Selbsportrait Vol. II CD. Track 5 audio is the last 90 seconds of "Hommage à Forst" plus "Weg". Track 6 audio is "Ausgewählt".

http://433rpm.blogspot.com/2017/02/of-course-you-know-achim-roedelius.html

1980 cassette compilation of selbstportrait-era stuff. totally different than the LP compilation a few years later on Sky. many tracks that came out on this cassette before appearing on later LPs, so not only different track titles, but in some cases longer edits & two tracks I don't think are on any other album including that Archive 73-78 box from a few years ago (and even THAT didn't use everything from the tape transfers)

Thanks!

To answer the OP's quandary, if a fraud, surely one in the same way as Harold Budd might be one.
