They were really great pre-Breakfast Club. New Gold Dream 81- 82-83-84 is a superb album. Listen to the song "Colours fly and Catherine Wheel".

Thier two newest albums are pretty good too. I plan on seeing them if they tour anywhere near me.

You're no son of mine.

Quoting late-period Genesis doesn't do much for the street cred, Neddy Ruxpin.

As a youngster, I really liked "Don't You Forget About Me", "Alive And Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself". Based on those songs, I checked _New Gold Dream_ out of the library and was so disgusted and annoyed by what I heard that I've never given them a second chance. I'm sure that I'd love them if I did, but I really have no desire to.

Tsk, young man. Get thee to Certain Download Locations you are aware of.

I was quoting Mike Nelson -- if he was quoting Genesis, oh well.

I love this song "Ghost Dancing" from Once Upon A Time. I never actually owned that album.

Bimble, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I bought that album (again) recently. I thought it was great, then I thought it was shit, but now it's obviously great. Not all of it. I've still heard Alive and Kicking too many times in my life to ever want to hear it again, but the rest of it, I really liked.

I just listened to this 5.1 DVD thing of New Gold Dream I've got, which is great, and seems to feature different mixes of songs - New Gold Dream itself, for example, is really quite different. Great, though.

Keith, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Really? A DVD of them? I feel so behind!

Bimble, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Funny that this thread should be revived -- I was going to start a thread defending "Don't You Forget About Me," because there's no part of that song that isn't fantastic. Just as good as anything off New Gold Dream IMHO.

Amen, Curtis. Amen.

A Brass Band In African Chimes + Last song on Sparkle In The Rain = some of my favourite music, ever. Top 3 favourite songs. This has been true for 20 years.

I've had a copy of New Gold Dream since I was 16, I love that album to pieces.

i wish EArly Gold was two full discs, that period seems to have been forgotten. the reissues didn't even add any new material!

has another band ever turned to shite more suddenly?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 19 January 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I think it's entirely commendable that they did. Nothing worse than a once great band dying slowly before your eyes, hanging around, stinking the place up. With Simple Minds, they got it over with nice and quick. You could almost totally forget that they still existed as a source of worthwhile music. No point in creeping back and poking the corpse, nothing of value happening there, just the gurgling farts of the dead. Somewhat ironic then that they announced this to the world with 'Don't You Forget About Me', but that was totally the point where we went our separate ways.

First time I hear about them asides 'Don't you forget about me'. 'Promised you a Miracle' and 'Hipnotised' are quite good but everything else I've heard about them struggles between the horrible and the half decent.

You might be feisty and Spanish and a girl but you have exceedingly deficient taste!!

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Monday, 10 August 2009 10:17 (fourteen years ago) link

It's that because the two songs I kinda liked about them are awful? Or is it because you like the rest of their catalogue? If it's the later, care to recommend me more?

hmmmm... i've heard a whole bunch of the singles and think they're reasonably good. 'dont you forget about me' is a great nostalgic single as far as they go.

They seem like people who kind of get the whole new wave thing but the production is so commercial. I wonder if there is good music under all that over-production and over-emoting. Made a lot of true believers want to live in a John Hughes movie, which is unforgivable.

The production on New Gold Dream is what I love most about it. One of the most crystalline, sparkling sounding records ever. Especially good on vinyl.

I dont care for anything of theirs later than NGD tho.

^ Agreed except for a couple of songs off Sparkle In The Rain (Catwalk, C Moon...)

Oh shit, just fired up a youtube of C Moon - had totally forgotten the way that matey boy sings 'cwy, cwy, cwy, cwy like a baby'

Catwalk is a fucking great song. Fuck! I forgot I'd bought a copy of Sparkle on vinyl a couple months back! I have to get my turntable set back up.

<3 for reminding me Nick.

I got some pretty hardcore dental work done once and the dentist put on "Sparkle in the Rain" on repeat for four hours. I heard "Waterfront" a few years later and got freaked out.

Went to HMV today to get the new six-disc box of the early albums, but it was €22. The hell? I'm pretty sure it's only £12.99 in the UK. Went back home and ordered it on Amazon, saved a few quid even with postage. Anyway, anyone else heard it yet? Anything remastered or messed up?

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Friday, 24 February 2012 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

isn't this boxset just a nice repackaging of the recent (i.e. 2002-ish), remasters with extra trax ?

have to say, i saw this in a shop this week for £15, and despite having no interest in the band before, i feel an urge to pick this up.

[and yes, the recent interview on tQ definitely swayed me .. ]

mark e, Friday, 24 February 2012 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

Hella good interview on TheQuietus, as usual! And as someome who doesn't have this stuff on CD, it's priced irresistably.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 24 February 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

Some nasty-looking box though innit?

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 24 February 2012 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

indeed it is. v. cheap and nasty.
even the elo box released end of last year had some design to it.
this is just a very cheap-n-nasty package.
that said, i'm very tempted as i have none of the early stuff.

Sparkle In The Rain gets boxed

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Simple-Minds.jpg

The spate of hugely expanded box-set reissues continues next year with Simple Minds’ breakthrough sixth album Sparkle in the Rain — featuring the singles “Waterfront” and “Up on the Catwalk” — set for re-release a a five-disc set featuring B-sides, remixes, BBC sessions, a previously unreleased concert and a 5.1 Surround mix of the album.

The Sparkle in the Rain reissue — which also will be released as a 2CD deluxe set, on 180-gram vinyl and as a Blu-ray featuring the Surround mix — arrives March 16, via Universal Music, according to the band, which just released a brand-new studio album last month.

The Super Deluxe Edition box set will include the full album, newly remastered this year at Abbey Road Studios, on one disc plus a second disc of B-sides and extended mixes. The third and fourth discs will include a previously unreleased concert recorded at the Glasgow Barrowlands in 1984, the year of the album’s release, plus a BBC radio session.

And the DVD will include a new 5.1 Surround mix of the album by Stephen Wilson, plus High Res Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes as well. Also on the DVD: promo videos for the album’s three singles, plus several television appearances.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 03:29 (nine years ago) link

Should note that the box doesn't include the demos. It's a shame because once I heard them I haven't really listened to the album since. No Steve Lilywhite. No drums. No Jim Kerr. = 100% improvement

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 03:30 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, the inclusion of the demos was my first thought as well. It'd still be interesting to see whether Steven Wilson was particularly ruthless in his 5.1 remix.
