I need to hear more Hillage (and maybe Gong--I have enough Gottsching I think.) What are good starting points?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 25 August 2006 14:20 (6 years ago) Permalink

i like almost all their records but my favourite gong album is 'camembert eletrique'. 'angels egg', 'you' and 'live etc' are all great too. 'shamal' has it's moments though is a bit too muso in places. 'live floating anarchy 1977' by planet gong and here & now is a mighty space punk rock freak out.

as for hillage - apart from 'rainbow dome musick', 'green' and 'live herald' were always my faves though i haven't played them in eons.

Fish Rising may be Hillage's signature LP (it is for me anyway). I just got the Gong Live in Sherwood Forest CD and it's good, though I was hoping for more Bloomdido (in fact I'm not sure he's on it at all). But it's good and decently recorded.

man, i've been on a big gottsching kick lately. been listening to e2e4, New Age of Earth, Inventions for Electric Guitar and Le Berceau de Cristal.

never really dug Gong. heard a few albums and it was always too silly/wanky. and never heard Hillage. besides Rainbow, which album should i start with or stay away from? i have easy access to Green, L, And Not Or and some BBC 1977 thing.

Is there much jan hammer love on the beardo threads?

bumrocks recently posted a David Earle Johnson track that i'm so head over heals in love with i plopped down some cash on his Time is Free album. it's just him and Hammer and it's pretty amazing. some amazing electronics, percussion workouts and a bit of the progfusion

let's also discuss the inexplicable lack of devadip carlos santana / mahavishnu john mclaughlin / xenusian brother #1 chick corea love on the beardo threads.

what have they done that's remotely disco-y/danceable?

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 01:12 (6 years ago) Permalink

and can we add A.R. & Machines to the competition? this album is a loopy masterpiece.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 01:14 (6 years ago) Permalink

oh, and i've finally gotten around to listening to a Derrick May comp and, man, it's so apparent the influence he got from these guys.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 01:18 (6 years ago) Permalink

Is the Introducing Steve Hillage comp a good, er, introduction to the man or should I start with a proper album?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 03:42 (6 years ago) Permalink

"Fish Rising" is probably the best Steve Hillage album, it's pretty much downhill all the way from there, although the downhill slope is pretty mild, and all of the albums have good bits.

I like "Rainbow Dome Musick" better than "E2-E4", but "Inventions for Electric Guitar" I like a lot better than either.

i just noticed that steve hillage produced sister feeling call and sons & fascination by simple minds!

i guess the melchior connection must be due to system 7 and hillage's work with the orb

i personally love it (though hillage is a better guitarist!)

i actually like Rainbow Dome Musick more than E2-E4 and only slightly more than A New Age on Earth. the guitar solo on side 1 of RDM is a work of genius, it somehow seems as otherwordly and sublime as the rest of the music despite being fairly conventional in style. whereas the soloing on E2-E4, as great as it is, somehow always takes me out of the vibe slightly, it detracts from the very gradual corroding of the synths

after listening to RDM over 30 times in the last fortnight (just an estimation, i'm not actually like counting or anything) i've come to the conclusion that it's the greatest ambient record i've ever heard. the only negative thing about it is the moog-style whining in the first half of side two, but it's only minor and i've learnt to accept it. so much great 70s music ruined by the godawful sound

oh yeah and just to bring it up to date, system 7 released a rather boring minimal techno record with derrick may this year. 3 years too late :(

Oh, this is interesting. I just downloaded RDM recently and really like it. Somehow I've never got around to Gottsching yet.

Anyone into Khan? I actually became interested in Hillage when I heard a Khan song on the radio. I enjoyed his playing on it. I see that they generally got poor reviews compared to Gong though. Is the album actually worth finding?

I would take Rainbow Dome Musick over E2-E4 most days of the week, but "Sunrain" off New Age Of Earth puts them both in the shade

I like the LP, though it took a while. Nothing really grabbed me at first, and it seemed kind of a lounge-prog style to me. But it does creep back into my mind now and then. I like all the Gong I have better, I will say.

trying rainbow dome musick now. have a lot of the other stuff and second the love for "sunrain", but any other more obscure recomemndations?

also e2-e4 is the greatest running music ever.

damn, missed this debate. e2-e4 is great, but I way prefer Gottsching's other material. rainbow dome music turns my whole apartment into this glorious multi-colored jeweled room ... it's like inhabiting the same emotional realm the Neverending Story exists in or some late 70s-80s new agey fantasy realm. OK, I can't describe it properly, but it's pretty good.

― hobbes, Monday, May 3, 2010 4:10 PM (2 years ago)

so i finally grabbed a reissue of this and on first listen i'd say hobbes otm, it's also i think a more apt comparison to "rainbow dome musick". it reminds me of fripp and eno in that it sits in the middle ground between smacked out ambient ("new age of earth") prog ("blackouts") and purist german electronic vibes ("e2-e4").

i think the analogous fripp records would be "heavenly music corporation", "evening star" and "an index of metals"

not sure if we can map gong onto this scheme, hillage didn't seem to make deep inroads into this territorry

i was thinking of what musicians i'd add to this thread for discussion
