geoff hansen (sp?) sounds like elliott smith if elliott smith was a 12 year old girl. it's impressive.

Singer of the Delays! Even when he goes "low" he still sounds like Stevie Nicks.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Totally agreed on the Spinners -- the "nowhere to go / guess I'll leave it alone" part.

Also Simply Red on "Holding Back the Years" -- I was relieved to learn on another ILM thread that I wasn't the only one who initially thought Mick was an older black woman.

Also Michael Jackson's half of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" -- I still can't tell where his lines end and Siedah Garrett's begin.

At the club we were at on Saturday, they were playing something where the singer sounded exactly like Bjork, but the music was all crunchy and guitary and new-sounding (so I knew it wasn't Sugarcubes or KUKL). Finally we asked dude who it was and he said the Mars Volta. The Mars Volta is all dudes, right? Can anyone confirm that the singer from MV sounds a lot like Bjork?

He doesn't sound female, but I hate the way Kurt Wagner's voice is so cig-damaged that the only way he can possibly hit any notes is to sing falsetto.

My mother visited me once and some Terry Callier was playing when she arrived. She presumed the singer was "a beautiful black woman".

Since then Tel and Nina Simone have sat close to each other in my brain.

I only just realized recently after hearing it at least 100 times that the Robin McNamara who sang "Lay a Little Lovin' on Me" was a dude.

It kinda goes both ways in Zep's "Battle of Evermore"--half the time I can't tell if it's Robert Plant or Sandy Denny singing.

Yar. I went to a Books concert where Death Vessel was the opening band and I spent the whole opening song trying to decipher if it was a guy or a girl, both for the voice and the androgynous look.

The first time I heard Material Issue was "Kim the Waitress," which I could've sworn was sung by a woman with a husky voice (like Carla Bozulich), and I thought it was a lesbian-crush song.

I had the opposite problem with "Pump up the Jam". I always thought it was a dude.

There are a few as well. Thao Nguyen per example, i kept thinking it was a dude, I had to go to youtube to see the voice actually coming out of her to make sure it was a girl. Not that she has a very masculine voice, maybe all indie rock male singers are effeminate.

Also Courtney Love. I'm too young for Nirvana, so I first heard Hole through some friends and all the time I thought it was a dude singing until I saw a video.
