i am a fan. i have defended that show more than once on ilx. that and raymond. i am all about cbs apparently. er, and nbc too, i guess. cuz i like 30 rock and earl and even scrubs. though i'm not a scrubs fanatic. last nite's king of queens was pretty good, mostly for the father/daughter stuff, but adam sandler was a bit much.

scott seward, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:41 (6 years ago) Permalink

How I Met... is the only multi-camera sitcom I watch. I generally don't have time for them, though I've seen enough of Raymond/Queens/2 and a Half Men to not feel like I'm missing very much.

I do love 30 Rock and The Office, though surely they're in a different league.

If it wasn't for the gonzo ratings of 2 and a half men, I would ask if the multi-camera was dead.

Also, i remember reading not too long ago that How I Met is on the bubble because the head of programming doesn't "get it", whatever that means.

Barney playing the obscure and impossible asian gambling game in Atlantic City was a gem.

I think Ted is underrated on HIMYM. He's really good and i have no idea who he is or what he did before this show.

Via Youtube, i found out that Robin played a hottie artist/sculptor on The L Word. A show I still have never seen.

BP - I just saw your post now. Thanks so much for the advice. It's not for a little while yet so I'm going to do some thinking and research and will definitely email you if that's where we decide to go! :-)

Yes you should.

Young New Yorkers have sex, make LOLz. Gets the Friends tag, but it's much funnier, better writing. Plus NPH.

I really only watch this show because Jason Segel is a comic genius. There are some funny jokes and scenes but the standard sitcom format of the show is a tremendous drag on it. The laugh track pains me so much. It's watchable now, but it could be just so much better without the cruft. Also, they get points for putting Martin Starr in an episode.

The last episode I saw of this show - where they go to Atlantic City so that one couple (sorry I can't remember their names) can get married- was pretty disappointing. It was all zany plot twist and no point, and not very funny. The Robin character depresses me because she's not bad looking, but she seems to repel any attempt to script her some sex appeal. The Doogie Howser guy is pretty much the best thing about this show.

3rd season premiere was ok, but this week was great. all the plot strands were awesome: hippie robin making out with normal robin, barney with a southern accent, ted's anti-new jersey rant, marshall's over-the-top death letter and the flashforward.

enjoyed the "broda" world of warcraft crazy girl episode of mother. (i know they are just taking the flashback thing from Friends - what with the hairstyles and all - but i always like them. and the flashes of the future too!)

but does anyone like the nerd show after how i met your mother? i do. and, come on, david and darlene getting it on after all these years! i hope mother gives it enough of an audience to last.

I'm assuming it's coming back. It better. J L-D is hottt.

n/a, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 18:34 (5 years ago) Permalink

I believe Christine is coming back as a mid-season replacement in a few months (after, I hope, The Big Bang Theory is cancelled).

last night's ep was probably the best this season so far. HIMYM is already starting to get a little too self-conscious and deliberate with its coining of catchphrases and stuff, but the whole Hot/Crazy Scale bit was still gold.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 18:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

Loved all the Dave Coulier jokes.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 8 February 2013 21:35 (3 months ago) Permalink

Yeah, loved the Dave Coulier stuff and the, uh, "big reveal"/confirmation that Robin Sparkles was based on Alanis (as opposed to, say, Tiffany).

They just went through a year's worth of storylines in about four episodes (i.e. with all the break ups) because they weren't sure they were coming back for another season. Now they somehow have to stretch out Robin and Barney's engagement for another year (and find a year's worth of stuff for everyone else to do), it could be a long and painful ride to the finish although the last few episodes have given me some hope.

Note deliberate avoidance of showing Robin's left hand in flash-forward scenes (to make marital status unknown), and the maternal feelings ex machina -- my theory is so correct.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 23:46 (1 month ago) Permalink

yeah pretty great episode. ted and the show can get super emo when wanting to make a point (more the show's strength than its weakness tbh) so while w/ any other show that would read as definite foreshadowing of some kind on this show w/ this character i'm not so sure. when they announced another season i was damn near pissed and stopped watching unless i heard it was a 'good one' like w/ last night but now that it seems pretty clear that yes they will actually have him meet the mother this season i'm weirdly looking forward to next season, i guess they could just do another year only w/ a new character but i'm hoping (and i seem to recall one of the himym dudes saying something to give me reason to hope) that next season will just jump around in time somewhat crazily.

balls, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 01:16 (1 month ago) Permalink

That'll be interesting. It'll be the last season because Segel is only doing is as a favour really.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 01:19 (1 month ago) Permalink

yeah i'd forgotten to what extent he had nearly disappeared post-freaks and geeks, fox wouldn't let apatow put him in the cast (as the lead iirc) of undeclared and then apatow writes a guest spot that ends up being in nearly half of the episodes that air anyway. that ends in 02 and then virtually nothing (some mockumentary jenna fischer directed pre-the office w/ some of her bros, cardellini's in it also, a minor role in some direct to dvd rachel leigh cook movie, 3 episodes of csi as a lab tech) until himym in 2005.

balls, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 02:02 (1 month ago) Permalink

there are no kids. camera pans out in the last episode and ted is locked in an asylum talking to his hands, with locks of yarn on each one like wigs.

s.clover, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 03:12 (1 month ago) Permalink

ha s.clover i had a similar thought watching the last ep. it felt really dark and depressing, i half expected ted to say he committed suicide and what we're watching is actually some kind of purgatory where he goes over his whole story but to make believe kids or smth

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 19 April 2013 23:35 (4 weeks ago) Permalink

i think i saw the most recent one but i can't think of anything that implied his theory... remind me plz?

Mordy, Saturday, 20 April 2013 00:03 (4 weeks ago) Permalink

Well, Barney feeling like he has total licence to perv on other women, even at his wedding, and Ted suggesting he might have the wrong idea, with Barney asking "Why? Because you know my fiancée better than I do?" does make me think that Barney + Robin might be heading for trouble. (I've had a 'cool girlfriend' and Ted's right. It's still possible that I'm reading in too much. I don't think they'd include that whole exchange between Ted and Barney if it didn't mean anything though.) That alone does not imply TWU's full theory but it's another point of support.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 20 April 2013 00:12 (4 weeks ago) Permalink

Last week's episode blew, this week's was great but ENOUGH with the Ted-Robin relapses already.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 07:23 (1 week ago) Permalink

I'm gonna double down on my theory (Ted is telling the story to his children one year or so after the mother's death, and is working his way towards getting their blessing on dating Aunt Robin): and add a more specific prediction: there will be a scene where Robin comforts a crying Ted in the rain in front of the mother's grave that visually echoes the scene in the park of this last episode.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 08:31 (1 week ago) Permalink

So the mother is age inappropriate and underweight? Oh yeah, so dead.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 07:45 (4 days ago) Permalink

Ha, I didn't think she looked inappropriately young? At least half his age plus seven, I'm sure. Thing is, if your theory is right, at the pace this show moves, it would easily take three more seasons to get through the whole story (or else just rush and botch things). So I'm hoping it's not.

This was a definite improvement on the last couple episodes. Are we supposed to be sympathizing with the Ted-Robin drama though? I'm getting pretty burned out on it. The Marshall-Lily stuff is keeping me pretty interested.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 18:49 (4 days ago) Permalink

josh radnor's 38, cristin milioti's 27. we knew she was a student in that class ted accidentally taught so we could assume she was young. ted-robin stuff was annoying but they handled it quickly (himym handling something quickly, imagine that). i guess they felt they needed to address that the way they (poorly) addressed victoria earlier. i have some hope now that at least the show isn't going to end on 'and kids that's how i met yr mother' w/ us barely getting to meet the mother, you don't cast milioti for a couple of cameos. just hoping they wrap up the wedding and the meet-cute in < 8 episodes. finale's probably ted-mama wedding.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 02:02 (3 days ago) Permalink

I think I actually like it if they're taking the title literally and Ted only meets the mother at the end of the series. This would be the best of the options that writer lays out imo:

2)They use the wedding as a framing device for a parallel flashback narrative about what the Mother was up to over the last 8 years, including the various times (Ted's lecture to the wrong college class, Ted dating Rachel Bilson) when their paths briefly, tangentially crossed. That's one of the ideas Thomas mentioned a couple of years ago for what they might do if a ninth season happened;
