I admit it, I still like it.

I dunno, I just find it weird when somebody with my sort of accent says it. I guess I find anyone saying anything remotely warm or endearing to me weird with this cold southern accent. ROBOT.

A bus driver called me 'babs' a few weeks ago. That's even worse, I think. Of course, you probably have to live round here... which is also not recommended.

i don't like to be winked at either, and the word "little" when applied to any female makes me lust...for bloody murder.

hehehe the torture continues:

You and me, we have an opportunity
And we could make it something really cool
But you, you think I'm not that kind of girl
I'm here to tell you baby, I know how to rock your world

Don't think that I'm not strong
I'm the one to take you on
Don't underestimate me boy
I'll make you sorry you were born
You don't know me
The way you really should
You sure misunderstood

Dont' call me baby
You got some nerve, and baby that'll never do
You know I don't belong t o you
It's time you knew I'm not your baby
I belong to me, so
Don't call me baby

Behind my smile is my IQ
I must admit, this does not sit, with the likes of you
You're really sweet
Mmm, you're really nice
But didn't mama ever tell you not to play with fire?

I don't mind it. Me & my boy both use it towards each other. My friends use 'babe' towards me aswell, which i also like. It's just a term of affection between close friends, but if anyone else called me it, well.... *karate chops the air*

I like it - don't get it often enough. I get called 'my dear' which is all right but a tad impersonal/patronising - but then he's Italian and I call him mio caro (my dear) or bell'uomo (beautiful man). I use babe more than baby.

I like it when Britney Spears uses it in songs, but it would be pretty cheesy coming from anyone else.

Hey baby, baby
ha hey
I saw you lying on the balcony
You had nothing on
Hey hey hey
You were naked
You were wearing only what our precious Lord had given you
da n da n da day day
Hey, little little Gabi
Hey
I think that's what you're called
It really doesn't matter what you're called
Mm-mm
Delicious
That bonbon was delicious last night
Ha
That bonbon that I ate before you existed in my fantasy was delicious
dit dit dit da du da dit dit dit da du da
la la la la la la
I'm inviting you over to my place
and once you're there

Shake your hair for me
Wild girl, shake your hair for me
Wild girl, shake your hair for me
ha ha ha ha
Wild girl, shake your hair
I know you think I'm crap

But come over to my place tonight
I've got everything prepared
I vomited on the carpet
and cleaned up the vomit
La la la la la
It was very very unappetizing
dit dit dit dit heh heh
dit dit dit dit hah
It even hurt
because I slipped with the dustpan
and my, uh, my arm went right in the dustpan
Ow ow ow ow
My hand is hurting
from the rhythmic device that I'm whacking
Y'all want to hear it?
la la la la la
Baby baby
I'll make myself chic
if you come over tonight
I'll put on my light green seersucker suit
hey baby
come to me and

shake your hair for me
ha ha ha ha
baby baby, shake your head hair for me
hoo hoo
wild girl, shake your hair for me
ha-aa-aa
wild girl, shake your hair
I know you think I'm crap

But come over to my place tonight
there's something delicious to eat
I went shopping
I went shopping
I bought something delicious
There's RICE!!
There's RICE!!
There's RICE!!
Baby baby baby baby there's rice!
And you get your choice of vegetable
either little carrots or peas out of a jar
just come over to my place
and once you're there

Shake your hair for me
Hoo hoo
Little girl, shake your hair
Ah
wild girl, shake your hair for me
wild girl, shake your hair
la da n day da
da da da n da
there's rice
baby baby, there's rice
ah ha ha ha
delicious delicious
baby there's rice
ha ha ha
I'll cook I'll cook I'll cook I'll cook I'll cook
I'll cook for you this one time
From then on it's your turn
wild girl, it'll be worth your while
there's delicious rice
la la la la
delicious delicious rice
out of a bag that you boil
ha ha ha
don't tell your parents anything about it
it's better that way
da da da
come to me
we'll lie down on the couch
la la la
I'll undress you slowly
la la la
then I'll serve the rice in an apron
ha ha
made out of fat
la la la
da da da n day
Unfortunately, I've put on a bit of weight recently
and my gut hangs down like an apron
but I don't care when you come over
because you'll be coming over
it's really nice over at my pad
I've been there myself
la la la
yeah yeah yeah and another yeah
baby baby baby
afterwards we'll fall asleep
and you can get to work the next day
you'll start cleaning at six in the morning
show me your hands
they're smaller than mine
so you'll be better able to get them into the corners
for cleaning
it's an ideal relationship
wild girl

This comment and the one about toraneko's Italian boyfriend is inneresting to me... Are there specific accents and/or voices allowed to get away with calling someone "Baby" more than others? If so, why? Which ones can and can't?

In my current relationship (and all those preceding if I recall correctly), I'm not called nor do I call my girlfriend "Baby."

I have a slight Southern accent that comes out when I'm in the south (where I grew up). I don't hear it so much, and compared to most of the locals, I don't have one, but Jen's from Boston, and she apparently hears it and has commented that she likes the way it sounds when I call her "Darling," which is pretty much the only "cliche" name I call her fairly often. I'd not thought of my accent at all in that context before she mentioned it. (Like I said, I don't really hear it, though I know it's more pronounced when I'm tired or drunk than other times.)

Also...

Juliana Hatfield said way back when that she called her first solo record Hey Babe because "it’s like the rock thing, Lou Reed and J. Mascis always say it. I just wanted to be part of the rock tradition."

But there's a B-Side on the For the Birds EP called "Hello My Name is Baby" which is essentially a rant against being called "Baby" from someone who declares in the chorus "Baby's not my name" (in spite of the counterintuitive title of the song).

So, question two: Are there other differences between "Babe" and "Baby?" Is "Babe" rock and "Baby" pop?

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 15:30 (twenty years ago) link

my waitress tonite kept calling me 'love' and i was digging it

rock on martin. "fall down baby i'll pick you up x2, call me baby i'll cut your grass (?!?!) you're so crazy, but kiss my ass" - hehe is that right? don't call her baby or she'll sell you a nickel bag of oregano?

plus piano version of got no idols woohaa

one of the reasons i think juliana is good at rock music is she knows how to say things like 'baby' and 'yeah' correctly

Being called "baby" as far as I'm personally concerned = huge, huge dud. Conversely in regards to That Girl's comments, I actually prefer being called "mi'ja" (a contraction for the Spanish words for "my daughter", i.e. "mi hija"), but only if my actual parents are calling me that. If I heard anyone else calling me "mi'ja", I'd scream.

That Girl, you come from a Latino family? Or has the culture so pervaded the state of Texas that now everyone's calling their daughters "mi'ja"?

When I think of someone calling their girlfriend/boyfriend "baby", I think of someone slightly suspect, i.e. they're either going to be the clingiest people on Earth or they have a weird child fetish that inches toward the land of pedophilia or they're just huge sleazoids. I kinda like Ling ("Ally McBeal" character) Woo's approach to nicknames in relationships, in that I don't mind having a nickname that comes from a food name. I would welcome being called "honey", "snickerdoodle", "pumpkin", "cupcake", or any of the other relationship-connected food nicknames you could think of.

(Yeah, yeah. Weird me again. *grin*)

so that's a no-go on "lil' deezy"?? ;-)

ron (ron), Thursday, 19 June 2003 03:09 (twenty years ago) link

I don't care for "baby" at all - but I love many other terms of endearment and tend to use them far too often (though many are reserved for just special people). I liek the food terms, too, such as 'moi petit choux' (the *only* thing I recall from high shcool French, sadly).

But I must admit that I do like this song.

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grievin'
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there

Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl

You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breakin' my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
Don't be a bad girl
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

Chorus

Baby, I love you
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

Chorus

Dee, yes I'm Hispanic. My Mexican boyfriends always called me "Mija" and this bothered me.

Nowadays I call *everyone* sweetie, honey, baby. . .I hope they don't mind.
