it's like seeing her make the goofy faces and camp it up really calls attention to how affected the goofy voices and campy rapping is.

yeah, this is otm

The Reverend, Saturday, 27 February 2010 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah her first big video appearance in "5 Star" was horrifying/hilarious to me, like just suddenly realizing how far she was gonna take the weird posture and bug eyes and fembot mannerisms at the exact moment it was clear she was about to be pretty ubiquitous for a while

do you just no longer own a car or did you used to have a radio and got rid of it or what

Ballistic, Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

got rid of car in 2001
stopped watching MTV around 2005

like the only way i know popular songs exist is via what people say and link on the internet and that makes me feel so disconnected and kills me inside

zsockster (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno i like the idea of having more control over what to listen to. the local stations here tended to do stuff in 2001 like play Ginuwine's "My Whole Life has Changed" and Usher's "U Got It Bad" every hour on the hour, and I liked both songs but it was like how many times did I need to hear it in a day?

Ballistic, Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

and like even though i "listened to more records than christgau" (or whatever that article said) in 2009, that was still 100% via promo CDs and pirated zips and rars from leak blogs. i heard 1,000 ALBUMS, not singles.

i literally have no way of hearing a "hot single" unless i turn off what i'm listening to and click a YouTube link.

And that makes me feel awful

feel u dude, I haven't had a car or tv since september. it's a weird feeling.

The Reverend, Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah same to an extent, when i'm at school i mostly hear radio songs via friends' cars or checking what the hits are on billboard's site & youtubing them - during breaks and shit it's such a great feeling to be able to drive around and listen to the radio, regardless of how bad the songs are

idgi, mon (k3vin k.), Saturday, 27 February 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Eh, I'm on the fence about her shtick. This song is pretty good, though...

not being glib or anything, but u guys should get like a little walkman or clock radio or one of those waterproof dealies that can go in the shower, imo a few minutes a day of radio listening is nice. tbh i don't know why FM radios aren't part of the package with iPods, i know why include a dead technology with the hot new thing etc. but it seems like a no-brainer to me.

some dude, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 00:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Not really a "no-brainer" since Apple wants you to fill your iPod with songs you pay them money for, not listen to for free. But I totally agree w/ your premise. Kicking back with the FM radio now and then can be a good thing.

I MISS THE RADIO IN CAR

i feel u -- but yall need to get one (1) clock radio if you have access to pop/hip-hop & r&b radio in a major market

i have one actually. i can't believe i haven't though of this before. 6pm pop radio hour? this is like a new ritual, i can feel it.

duh!

two weeks pass...

if anyone has doubted her lady gaga complex, nicki has supposedly hired gaga's management

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:05 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh minaj has never worn, said or done anything that struck me as obviously gaga-esque or gaga inspired

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:29 (fourteen years ago) link

most of it still feels totally wayne-derived or out of the missy/left eye/da brat wacky female rapper playbook

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:30 (fourteen years ago) link

the rigid fembot thing reminds me a lot of how gaga poses/acts on stage

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:33 (fourteen years ago) link

when has gaga actually done rigid fembot moves, i can't think of any examples. that seems more the province of beyonce imo.

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:36 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe i'm being poisoned by proximity

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:39 (fourteen years ago) link

also all the valley girl voices and harajuku girl stuff are clearly gwen stefani, who's really patient zero for a lot of the goofy female star stuff going on in pop the last few years

xpost

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:40 (fourteen years ago) link

when gaga's on the charts
boy you gon think
you gon think she invented quirk

ronnie james dyao (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:55 (fourteen years ago) link

it's a gagafication, clap, clap bravo

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 08:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Actually it raises the question, to what extent has Gaga been influenced by the aforementioned high-profile female rappers of the 90s/00s? Like it seems a pretty reasonable thing to interrogate, esp. re Lil' Kim and Missy, but I haven't run across anyone writing about that. Are people just more comfortable linking her up to Peaches or whatever indie electro type person, or has Gaga herself emphasized other lines of influence? (Or, I guess, is the connection all in my head?)

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link

sorry, i guess that really belongs in Gagathread - - - will repaste.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:16 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda crossing over w/ the bedrock thread w/ this post but since it's about "my chick bad" i figured it might as well go in here

anyway the spring break performance of "my chick bad" is so funny

http://www.musicistheheartofoursoul.com/2010/03/mtv-spring-break-2010-performances.html

first of all, for some reason minaj is yelling her verse and it seems like she can't really find her footing in these massive heels, so it comes off like an amy poehler parody or something

also the best part is that her fembot routine gets thrown off by people accidentally batting beach balls at her

2 guys 1 jag (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 05:43 (fourteen years ago) link

ok the line on the lemonade remix where she threatens to "put this pussy on your chipped tooth" is so much worse than the sideburns line ever was

surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 14:55 (thirteen years ago) link

there's no such line on the remix i have?

i'm in a tricky little mood
i trick these little dudes
i tell 'em that i love 'em but i never really do
see i like pretty shoes
and i like pretty minks
and i like sightseeing the pyramids and the sphinx

she's not as good as trey songz or fabolous, who are both GREAT on it, but her verse is fine

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

also this seems not to be the thread where "massive attack" was discussed, but i definitely love that song. and the video.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

It's actually on the Fabolous - "For the Money" remix. That "Lemonade" verse is boring and fuck off with the "minks," too.

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, and the complete couplet is “I told Fab 'Get that Michael Knight KITT Coupe' / before I put this pussy on your chipped tooth."

i somehow only heard up out my face remix the other day for the first time, had forgotten how much i loved the original but: best minaj verse imo love her in a softer 90's pop rn'b setting
