Would you really want anyone who frequents this board to hear the Dave Matthews solo album? I wouldn't. Save it for people with good taste!

from a friend's email: "btw, a few weeks ago i found two dave matthews cds in my apartment and have no idea of how they got here. the worst part is, no decent store'll even buy the fuckers from me."

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:23 (twenty years ago) link

I lived in SW Virginia for a while, and that shit was crammed down my throat for about 5 years. Thats why I hate them.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:27 (twenty years ago) link

I've heard the new version of "Gravedigger" many times; I was thinking about starting a thread on it. It's okay. The thing that struck me most was the orchestration in the last part of it, and how much the arrangement reminded me of Metallica's S&M album. Otherwise I'd say it's got more of a straight-ahead rock structure than his stuff with the band. I've heard a few other songs on the album but don't remember them very well. (ask me on chat about the circumstances; far to name-droppery to mention here, haha.)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

teeny in not afraid of being gauche shocka p.s. have you heard the new Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett song 'cause it's a STONE COLD SMASH!

Dave Mathew's is an extrordinary band, chock full of etxrordinarilly talented music artists with soul and skills.

Hee.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Mathew's is an extrordinary band

I'm really trying to comprehend the use of the apostrophe here.

Ignoring its being misplaced in a proper name (last name is Matthews, correct?) .. Did this person intend to write:
"The band that is Dave Matthews's (band) is an extrordinary (one.)"

Or is it just another dumbshit DMB fan that doesn't know how to use punctuation?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

(gosh I hope I didn't typo or use improper punctuation in that post...)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

< pedant > ahem: "Ignoring its being misplaced...."

Quite apart from the fact that you're using the wrong tense ("Ignoring it's having been misplaced....")

Other than that, carry on! < /pedant >

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

ahem: "Ignoring its being misplaced....

Yes? You don't think an apostrophe goes there, do you? Possessive pronoun, dude.

Touche' on the tense thing though ..

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

Of course it wsn't as good as the extraordinary [SIC people!] double-whammy in: "Dave Mathew's is an extrordinary band, chock full of etxrordinarilly talented music artists with soul and skills."!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

Can we get over this "dumbshit DMB fan" stuff, please? It's really only making you seem pompous, and I think we've had enough examples of somewhat intelligent fans to dispel that idea anyway.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

Unfortunately the vast majority of those who've been posting here do seem to be absolutely intent in creating / fulfilling this stereotype....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Unfortunately, indeed.
It's getting old, which is why I think it's in order to simply discount their posts as opposed to pointing out every flaw and attributing that mistake to their musical tastes.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:34 (twenty years ago) link

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:38 (twenty years ago) link

Seriously though, I was mesmerized by that phrase and really wanted to know what the author's intent was... But then I thought, naw - probably just an accident.

And Allison, we know not all DMB fans are idiots. This thread has just become a parody of itself .. let us have some fun. Go tell the Joy Division fans they can't spell.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

Alright then, Dave. Have fun.
Also...may I suggest that if you don't want me to take your posts personally then don't insult us as a collective fan base, refer to individuals.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

OK. But "just another dumbshit DMB fan" doesn't attack every fan - just the dumb ones.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:47 (twenty years ago) link

I actually tried downloading some Dafe Mettews Bend today - just out of curiousity, like. Anyway, Soulseek crashed my computer twice when I tried searching for DMB on it, and when I tried again just now the whole bloody server went down.

I think God is trying to tell me not to bother.

I'm ready to download some Dave Matthews myself, I don't think I've ever heard him. There's gotta be something to him if he's getting everyone so upset.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

There's not. Aren't the people getting upset here his fans, who are upset that everyone thinks he's bland/mediocre?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 21 August 2003 21:25 (twenty years ago) link

B) The "Kneel Before Our Superior Taste" Bourgeois Elitist Snobs of the ILM-Elite

J (Jay), Sunday, 24 August 2003 11:53 (twenty years ago) link

Without attacking anyone, I don't hate the guy (like I hate certain un-elected officials and Billy Joel), I just don't like his music. He occasionally brays like a mule and the overall effect of his music is, well, blandish.

we can not let this not go on...
wait double negative implies the positive...
ok...
we can't not let this not go on...
(3x negative would reverse the implied positive, thereby making it a reverse-double negative=positve)

RE: Live -vs- Die --- Is that referring to the thread or the band?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

I think dave matthews writes some terrific melodic pop/rock. Much more complex than say matchbox 20. perhaps all the hate should be reserved for bands like that instead.

Rocket Man, Friday, 29 August 2003 18:20 (twenty years ago) link

Well, then, Rocket Man...Please feel free to post a Matchbox 20: Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad and Hated
(Might as well, This thread is taking too long to load.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

ya read my mind ...

There's enough hate to go around. If you start a "Matchbox 20: Name your reasons why are they so bad and hated" thread, they will come.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

Matchbox 20 has good solid traditional song structure though, where DMB relys more on emotion and a touch of jambandystuff to loosely drape over their song structure. This does allow them more complexity, but MB20 has had more solid radio hits due to their traditional structure.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:31 (twenty years ago) link

I wonder what would happen if someone were to post a "Matchbox 20: Name your reasons why are they so great and respected" thread...what would happen?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

for some reason, i don't feel like posting the "Hooray!" image macro this time.

Let us not lock this thread EVAH!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 29 August 2003 19:50 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, but every time we post, we make it harder and harder and harder for the Creed and Matchbox 20 threads to catch up...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:13 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Matthews Band are the worst band ever. With the worst vocalist ever. If DMB fans hate Creed its because they are jealous of a great singer. Do not compare creed to dmb. Creed rock and DMB suck.

Ricky, Saturday, 30 August 2003 05:07 (twenty years ago) link

No. I think you've been misinformed. You see, even though a lot of people don't like DMB, but it wouldn't be because they think they suck. They're all irrefuably talented musicians, which would make your statement entirely false.
Saying Creed rocks would also be incorrect, because uh...they don't.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:09 (twenty years ago) link

ya know, i hate me some DMB, but, i think that is eclipsed by my total and utter hatred of scott stapp...
at least i don't hear as much DMB as i used to but creed still manages to be everywhere...
maybe it's just pittsburgh.
home of the mullet that never left.

eedd, Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:42 (twenty years ago) link

Scott Stapp is a great singer. As pointed out above Dave Matthews sings like a muppet.
Dave Matthews Band are awful, as the amount of postings to this thread proves.

Creed Fan, Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:11 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Matthews Band are far more original than Creed. Far superior musicians and far better in concert. At least dave doesnt get so stoned that he cant remember the words and the band dont get sued by 'fans'. Creed are the worst band in the world then its Pearl jam. Scott Stapp is just an Eddie Vedder clone.

DMB Fan 666, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:36 (twenty years ago) link

Scott may have a nice voice, but it's also extremely impassive. Dave has about a billion styles of singing, all of which represent different moods or feelings. The Creed guy only has one fucking sound that reminds me of gurgling. Don't compare Creed to DMB. Ever.

Allison (Allison), Monday, 1 September 2003 02:43 (twenty years ago) link

Scott Stapp is a far superior singer to Dave Matthews. Creed rock a lot harder than DMB ever could. I cant imagine anything more boring than a Dave Matthews Band concert. Except maybe for a Dave Matthews solo concert.
Will he have bongo solos?

Jonty, Monday, 1 September 2003 02:55 (twenty years ago) link

Im surprised theres a Creed : Name Your Reasons Why Are They So Bad And REALLY Hated thread. I didnt know that there was internet connections in trailer parks now. Most Creed fans ive met are stupid jocks who's knuckles drag along the ground , they are unwashed, have mullets and are illiterate.
If comic book guy was here he would say "Creed: worst band ever"
(Wish I could've put a picture up with him saying that)
