^ Completely! To be honest, I've always been a mix junky so I find it very hard to resist. Having said that, the most exciting recent mixes have come from the UK / dubstep camp e.g. Scuba Substance, Shed FACT, Appleblim Fabric, Oneman's Winter Mix. Finding little to get excited about on the 4 to the floor side (with the exception of the mnml ssgs series).

the gui boratto mix is eh. most mixes are kind of eh, have no patience with them any longer.

also, pretty much any mix a la Renaissance or Cocoon or Mobilee or Get Physical = total garbage toss-off bullshit.

they proliferate like mushrooms, and though mushrooms can be tasty, they also grow in shit.

Was ambivalent about asking the record store to order it for me, thanks for tipping me off. The carl craig mix sounded good from the samples I heard, also.

three weeks pass...

Been liking some of Mendo + Danny Serano's beats lately.

A friend of mine is in Spain at the moment, hoping he'll report back on the state of things over there soon.

Any thoughts on the Barraca label's recent ouput?

"La Cantada" by Simone Burrini my fave bobbins of 2010 so far. Very in the Luciano/Villalobos vibe, but prettier than either, and w/a GORGEOUS female spanish vocal

Anybody listening to Efdemin's new album, Chicago? I know the "deepness" and the album title can make your eyes glaze over, but it is actually surprising me by being a really satisfying and varied album. Subtle and meticulous as you'd expect from him, interesting percussion egged on by odd vocal snippets, really natural build up and breakdown of loops to keep the momentum ebbing and flowing. Good atmosphere that doesn't tip too far into cliche territory. It definitely doesn't blow you away, but I've found myself unconsciously coming back to it when I'm not sure what I'd like to listen to.

i was looking for a thread to talk about Chicago. i really love this album and, like you mentioned, very subtle.

i love that sample he uses where the girl says "OH MY GAAD! OH MY FAAAKING GAAD"

"nightlights" is the best house track all year. sumptuous, brash, and those laser reverb effects that turn up midway are devastating

efdemin album is well-produced fluff in comparison

wow efdemin is perfect, thanks

FM-style synth sound throughout Chicago is great. it's refreshing to hear something that isn't so analog or virtual analog sounding

0xCAFED00D (LOLK), Friday, 4 June 2010 02:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Definitely agree on that last point, I grew up on a steady diet of cheap sounding 8 bit FM synths.

And I think that its high time that chiptune influenced house and techno came into vogue.

Errr, I'll sit this one out, thanks.

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Friday, 4 June 2010 07:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Well whatever.

I've given up on having fashionable opinions, I just know what I like.

I'm looking for stuff that sounds like Hieroglyphic Being using a SID synth, or something equivalent.

initiate slut mode (Siah Alan), Friday, 4 June 2010 09:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't get me wrong, do as you please by all means, it's just that personally I can't fucking stand chiptunes.

Tonight I Dine on Turtle Soup (EDB), Friday, 4 June 2010 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

This sounds like a great idea. Personally, I was hoping somebody would do hard grinding Regis tracks with soaring 8bit NES style melodies and some UK funky drums over the top. Recommendations?
