I've only been to 2 shows, but they were fucking awesome because they played mostly older tunes (I don't particularly care for their last 2 albums). I would probably go to more, but I live way back in the boonies of West Virginia, which is approximately 4 hours away from anywhere they play and I don't really like them enough to drive 8 hours in one day just to see a show.
To my dismay, the parking lot wasn't as jam-packed with inebriated frat boys as I was led to believe :(
I'm just hoping that in the solo album he implements some of the old DMB characteristics...I'm really getting tired of this commercialized shit.

"this commercialized shit"
DMB goes POP!!!???

eedd, Friday, 8 August 2003 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

If DMB are POP then half of ILX will start to like them. I bet the Dave Matthews solo album sounds just like DMB without the wanky jams. Which presumably may make it more 'pop'? Will DMB fans (especially the 'jocks') like that?

Roger The Cabin Boy, Friday, 8 August 2003 21:32 (twenty years ago) link

you understand neither pop nor dave matthews

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 21:39 (twenty years ago) link

It's no question that the music has gotten progressively more pop-ish(i.e. simple riffs and lackluster lyrics) through recent years, but I think you can attribute that to his change from party boy to mature father. That's understandable...but I really hope he changes it up a little for the solo stuff.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 9 August 2003 00:56 (twenty years ago) link

all the write ups i see keep saying stuff like "this will displease his fan base" and "it's worlds away from the DMB stuff". which, is good, and i'll give it a listen, but, i fear it'll be a bit too introspective...
supposedly, it's almost all acoustic and very "pared down".
that's all here-say and conjecture at this point.

eedd, Saturday, 9 August 2003 11:31 (twenty years ago) link

That's all subjective to which "DMB stuff" it's different from. I know I'm all for hearing something atypical and innovative from him. I'm know he CAN do it because he's done it before...but I'm still curious to find it out if he'll venture from the predictable structure that they've adapted with the past 2 albums.
All you can do then is listen. The worst that can happen is you don't like it.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 9 August 2003 12:38 (twenty years ago) link

DAVES ALBUM IS GONNA KICK SERIOUS ASS DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!

ryan j harvey, Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:29 (twenty years ago) link

okay first of this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard! stop generalizing! he isn't only good for one audience, im a huge DMB fan and I not only listen to him but metal, jazz, funk, punk, alternative ect. and I most certainly do not where a suit to work everyday because I am a musician, all of that band is very talented and have worked hard to get where they are, also dave is a great lyric writer, his love songs are awesome, and there are alot of other songs, other then crash that someone had mentioned about, that have great meaning to them, just because you think hes voice isn't that great doesn't mean you can take away from the musical talent of the band, also to get to the point of killing someone because you don't like their music is absolutely insane! grow the hell up, just because you don't like them doesn't mean that people who do are stupid to listen to them.

Can we please forget about this thread? Forever?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

Not until it reaches 5000 and is fed by some fish and bread

jesus, Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

I say let it starve and then crucify the carcass. If it comes back from the dead, then We'll all start posting on it again.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

They've been posting clips from the solo album on the official website, and I must say that so far I'm liking it a lot more than the last two. Recently, his choices of singles haven't properly denoted their collecive sound, nor have they really been any good. Gravedigger (the solo single) sounds like it could put an end to their slump, though it is a bit banal...to say the least. Just check it out, you might like the new sound.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:16 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe everyone should download the new Dave Matthews album from Kazaa and try it out, see what you think and everyone can post their opinions on this thread. At least you will have heard it.

Wynona & Brad, Saturday, 16 August 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

uh...no I don't think anyone will do that.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:09 (twenty years ago) link

They're music fans. Its perfectly clear they dont like to diss something they havent heard. They want to diss it , so they have to hear it 1st. But some of them may actually like it if they give it a chance. Even if it is just 1 or 2 people.

Wynona & Brad, Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:13 (twenty years ago) link

This is true, but I'm almost certain that they won't make an attempt to hear it and will still satirize them just as harshly.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:29 (twenty years ago) link

Some of us may just want to listen to other things entirely as well...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:37 (twenty years ago) link

For us theres always room for more music.

Wynona & Brad, Saturday, 16 August 2003 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

Then you try to convince this lot to listen to them. A noble goal, indeed...and I've yet to succeed.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

now that dave has listed the mighty turin brakes cd as one of his fave records of the year will they become the new dave matthews band?

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:33 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Matthews and the ICP...together again for the first time!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 16 August 2003 22:40 (twenty years ago) link

this thread is sort of a weird inverse isnt it? isnt it more typical that fans of underground and/or less popular music are trying to convince fans of popular music that techno/disco/jazz/classical/punk, etc., dont suck? i guess this was abvious all along, but for some reason, it has me laughing today.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 17 August 2003 15:51 (twenty years ago) link

Would you really want anyone who frequents this board to hear the Dave Matthews solo album? I wouldn't. Save it for people with good taste!

Floater, Monday, 18 August 2003 23:21 (twenty years ago) link

from a friend's email: "btw, a few weeks ago i found two dave matthews cds in my apartment and have no idea of how they got here. the worst part is, no decent store'll even buy the fuckers from me."

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:23 (twenty years ago) link

I lived in SW Virginia for a while, and that shit was crammed down my throat for about 5 years. Thats why I hate them.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:27 (twenty years ago) link

I've heard the new version of "Gravedigger" many times; I was thinking about starting a thread on it. It's okay. The thing that struck me most was the orchestration in the last part of it, and how much the arrangement reminded me of Metallica's S&M album. Otherwise I'd say it's got more of a straight-ahead rock structure than his stuff with the band. I've heard a few other songs on the album but don't remember them very well. (ask me on chat about the circumstances; far to name-droppery to mention here, haha.)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 18 August 2003 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

teeny in not afraid of being gauche shocka p.s. have you heard the new Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett song 'cause it's a STONE COLD SMASH!

Dave Mathew's is an extrordinary band, chock full of etxrordinarilly talented music artists with soul and skills.

"I listen to [...] alternative"

Hee.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Mathew's is an extrordinary band

I'm really trying to comprehend the use of the apostrophe here.

Ignoring its being misplaced in a proper name (last name is Matthews, correct?) .. Did this person intend to write:
"The band that is Dave Matthews's (band) is an extrordinary (one.)"

Or is it just another dumbshit DMB fan that doesn't know how to use punctuation?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

(gosh I hope I didn't typo or use improper punctuation in that post...)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

< pedant > ahem: "Ignoring its being misplaced...."

Quite apart from the fact that you're using the wrong tense ("Ignoring it's having been misplaced....")

Other than that, carry on! < /pedant >

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

ahem: "Ignoring its being misplaced....

Yes? You don't think an apostrophe goes there, do you? Possessive pronoun, dude.

Touche' on the tense thing though ..

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

Of course it wsn't as good as the extraordinary [SIC people!] double-whammy in: "Dave Mathew's is an extrordinary band, chock full of etxrordinarilly talented music artists with soul and skills."!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

Can we get over this "dumbshit DMB fan" stuff, please? It's really only making you seem pompous, and I think we've had enough examples of somewhat intelligent fans to dispel that idea anyway.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

Unfortunately the vast majority of those who've been posting here do seem to be absolutely intent in creating / fulfilling this stereotype....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Unfortunately, indeed.
It's getting old, which is why I think it's in order to simply discount their posts as opposed to pointing out every flaw and attributing that mistake to their musical tastes.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:34 (twenty years ago) link

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:38 (twenty years ago) link

Seriously though, I was mesmerized by that phrase and really wanted to know what the author's intent was... But then I thought, naw - probably just an accident.

And Allison, we know not all DMB fans are idiots. This thread has just become a parody of itself .. let us have some fun. Go tell the Joy Division fans they can't spell.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

Alright then, Dave. Have fun.
Also...may I suggest that if you don't want me to take your posts personally then don't insult us as a collective fan base, refer to individuals.

Allison (Allison), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

OK. But "just another dumbshit DMB fan" doesn't attack every fan - just the dumb ones.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:47 (twenty years ago) link

I actually tried downloading some Dafe Mettews Bend today - just out of curiousity, like. Anyway, Soulseek crashed my computer twice when I tried searching for DMB on it, and when I tried again just now the whole bloody server went down.

I think God is trying to tell me not to bother.

I'm ready to download some Dave Matthews myself, I don't think I've ever heard him. There's gotta be something to him if he's getting everyone so upset.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 21 August 2003 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

There's not. Aren't the people getting upset here his fans, who are upset that everyone thinks he's bland/mediocre?
