My, my it is very nice. Thanks for the heads up. As for chart discussion, Yael Naim's "New Soul" just debuted at number 9 on the Hot 100 based strictly on digital sales from its inclusion in a MacBook Air commercial. It was only played on three Hot 100 stations according to Billboard. Pretty amazing for a pretty run-of-the-mill song. And I know, I know a one week digital sales spike can happen at any time, but this is one of the most indisputable cases of radio play not being at all necessary anymore.

matt2, Thursday, 7 February 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Buckcherry back in the Top 10 with a horrid, horrid song. I enjoy a good comeback but not this one.

Yael Naim is up 9 to 7 this week - surprised me, if no one else.

Impressive that Rihanna's gone to No. 3 with the fourth single off that album. I thought the success of "Don't Stop the Music" might help Michael Jackson's revisited "Wanna Be Startin' Something," but no such.

Flo Max is still at No. 1 and may never ever leave. Unless Mariah, who's in at 78 with "Touch My Body," bullets to the top with a full week of airplay. (Is it a digital single yet?)

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

On the bright side, Lupe Fiasco's "Superstar" has become a bona fide hit, this week up from 25 to 21.

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

that's not a bright side.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I like "Superstar," but "Kick, Push" deserved it more.

every top 10 this year has been so dire

i mean it's a pretty bad sign i think when i'm excited that the 3rd sean kingston single is hanging around in the top 10

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

HOW IS APOLOGIZE STILL IN THE TOP 5 HOW HOW HOW HOW HOWH OWH OWHOW HOWHOWHO WH WOHWOHW OWHOW

glad to see sensual seduction up there though

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

kind of crazy that "Independent" is already peaking 20-something spots higher than "Wipe Me Down" ever got.

half the songs in the top 40 are so old i don't even think i've heard them this year.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Keyshia Cole's "I Remember"got to #1 on the R&b charts this week. Well deserved, finally dethroned fucking Alicia Keys. EUGH.

"Falsetto" moving up from 51 to 39 is pretty big... "Feedback" is a officially a flop now I guess (56 to 61...).

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah this is a pretty unremarkable top 40 but it's only February... plus there are some interesting moves being made. "Sensual Secuction," "No Air," "Falsetto," "Touch My Body," "Suffocate" , etc.

and yeah it is kind of shocking that "Independent" is becoming so big... great song tho,

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I dance on "Feedback"'s grave, preferably to the beat of a better song.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:56 (sixteen years ago) link

woah Miley Cyrus actually crossing over to legitimate pop radio.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 February 2008 16:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Janet's new single "Luv" will do fairly well

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 February 2008 17:00 (sixteen years ago) link

ok cool about "falsetto" and "independent"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 February 2008 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm the only one around here who likes "Apologize", am't I?

The Reverend, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't hate it

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"independent" is rad

this should be charting higher, imo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu9KBjAflK8

i think flo rida is my least favorite popular rapper of the past 3-4 years. maybe chingy. i'll stop listening to music if i ever like a flo rida song bcuz of flo rida. his new single w/ timbaland is passable but his verses are the worst thing in the milky way right now

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 February 2008 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

this is it: http://videos.onsmash.com/v/5QwLJwTL35aDzyW6

i mean has there been a more generic looking rapper in the history of the game? he's like what an snl parody of 50 cent would've looked like in 2004 right down to the motherfucking wife beater

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 February 2008 07:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i thought dude was gonna be nice bcuz ppl were talking about that he had song w/ rick ross like it was some real underground/overlooked smash like how people talk about like dg yola or fam lay but he is the worst of all bad pop-rap shit. dude is really the fucking colbie callait of rap.

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 February 2008 07:54 (sixteen years ago) link

that he had song w/ rick ross that song he had w/ rick ross

i like the chingy/ amerie joint

gr8080, Monday, 18 February 2008 08:06 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah like i don't think i've ever minded a chingy single really (actively like "right thurr" and kinda feelin his new one w/ luda) but he's almost inexcusably vapid imo

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 February 2008 08:09 (sixteen years ago) link

"One Call Away" 4eva.

Tim F, Monday, 18 February 2008 09:30 (sixteen years ago) link

joint with Amerie is good but almost too slick for Chingy, like if Zac Efron did a romantic comedy without corny song interludes.

Tim F, Monday, 18 February 2008 09:35 (sixteen years ago) link

damn Jordan, I wouldn't say Flo Rida is above criticism, but it's weird when someone who gives a pass to Plies turns around and goes THE LINE MUST BE DRAWN HERE about two inches over.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 18 February 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Plies aounds enough like T.I. that I'm cool with him.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 14:53 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah it's not like i won't ride for mediocre rappers (or at least songs by mediocre rappers) but flo rida popularity baffles me. i mean obv i know it's bcuz he has a decent song w/ t-pain on the hook (hello plies) but still i'm surprisde more people aren't calling flo rida out for being a chucklehead. i guess ppl don't care?

Q - who was the last French artist to have any kind of hit in the US before Yael Naim? I'm struggling to think of anyone...

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

j0rdan's pretty otm, plies is way more defensible

Q - who was the last French artist to have any kind of hit in the US before Yael Naim? I'm struggling to think of anyone...

Best I can come up with: Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg's "Je T'Aime ... Mon Non Plus" reached #58 in 1970. Claudine Longet had five songs in the Hot 100 between 1966-68, though none reached higher than #30. Edith Piaf's "Milord" hit #88 in 1961.

jaymc, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd have thought that there'd have been a new-wave band from France, but I guess they were all British and German. And Technotronic was Belgian.

jaymc, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't forget Daft Punk. Both "Around the World" and "One More Time" reached #61 on the Hot 100. Although, I'm not sure those really qualify as hits. I'm actually surprised they got that high.

matt2, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait, really? I didn't even look them up because I assumed they wouldn't have placed at all. Wow.

jaymc, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:11 (sixteen years ago) link

dude "Around The World" was pretty big

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:13 (sixteen years ago) link

That was during my dark period, admittedly.

jaymc, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, it really was, but to me it seemed like it was something I would've expect to be number one on the Club chart but maybe not on the Billboard 100.

matt2, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, whenever I heard the "it's too late to apologize" line I immediately want to sing "and I can't beeeeee without you babe".

musically, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

haha woah that is a little uncanny.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:45 (sixteen years ago) link

hahaha wooooahaha

...and "Music Sounds Better With You" reached #62. Daft Punk be placin' in the low 60s.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

warning track power

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Crazy. I seriously thought for a long time that "Music Sounds Better With You" was like blog-house or something; I didn't hear it until 2004 (probably via an ILX poll) and had no idea it was from the '90s, much less a semi-popular song.
