And having a specific headbang section >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> being entirely headbangable. It's the anticipation, you see.

'knights of cydonia' is one muse's better tracks but i don't like 'starlight' at all.

blueski, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:27 (sixteen years ago) link

As should be readily apparent, I am a Muse fan. Mostly/entirely due to Knights of Cydonia, in fact. And I like to head bang because I can't dance, nor do I have much interest in it. Speed, aggression, and an incredibly catchy chorus do more for me than a groovy beat or whatever you kids call it.

Before I start posting the results, here are the other "Worst Tracks":

The Freemasons Mix is soooo good though.

musically, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I really should have voted....

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

seriously the two so-called "worst" tracks so far are two of the best here! ilm, you vote for camera obscura, tv on the radio, grizzly bear, midlake and justice about half a decade after the fact, and then hate on beyonce and fergie ferg? you fucking chumps.

uh xp i agree panic at the disco are bad

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I like Beyonce but Ring the Alarm is a sonic shit-missile. And after listening to the Freemasons mix so many times it seems even worse than when I first heard it.

musically, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:52 (sixteen years ago) link

omg i totally forgot to mention it - i heard (what i presume was) the freemasons rmx while i was having my hair cut the other day! it is AMAZING.

i heart the original 4eva though.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

While Fergie definitely sucks, Camera Obscura, Grizzly Bear, the Hold Steady, etc. are not much better.

Tape Store, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

The two singles I voted for were "Knights of Cydonia" and "Crazy." Tells you just how awesome "Crazy" is, in that it spans such a large range of tastes.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Camera Obscura, Grizzly Bear, the Hold Steady, etc. are not much better.

This is 2/3 true. Camera Obscura rule.

Drooone, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Musically, may I suggest keeping the Worst Tracks in their own thread? It's going to be confusing scanning through this thread and seeing those single covers popping up amidst the list.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:26 (sixteen years ago) link

but "Ring The Alarm" totally belongs on this list.

danzig, Thursday, 10 May 2007 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link

That was all three of them, actually. And I think I mentioned that they are the "Worst Tracks" right by them so hopefully there won't be too much confusion about it, which wasn't my intention.

"And can someone please explain why they voted for "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'." I went to see them recently and sang along to every word as only a gay boy can but practically everything on new album is very disappointing."

It's a fantastic, gorgeous track, #7 on my ballot. The bride, in particular, is excellent. And who can resist the lyrics in the chorus? It's the Sisters at their best.

This might be the year's most beautiful track. It's got these gorgeous 'aahs,' this ebbing and flowing guitar and a reassuring, heartbreaking vocal. Listening to "Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack" = a truly cathartic experience

Other ILXors said...

the best track is the ballad "Irreplacable" - by far. I think it must be the most emotionally affecting thing she's done, the chorus is amazing:

You must not know bout me
You must not know bout me
I could have another you in a minute
Matter fact he'll be here in a minute

You must not know bout me
You must not know bout me
I could have another you by tomorrow
So don't you ever for a moment
Get to thinking you're irreplacable

Okay so that probably doesn't convey it's brilliance. But the way she performs it, it's total stiff upper lip, lump in yr throat heroic fronting - Beyonce riding off into the sunset, a tear still drying on her cheek.
-Tim Finney

i love "to the left, to the left... everything you own in the box to the left" so much as well - the way you think it's a dance before the hit comes, or how it's like beyonce forcing herself on her hampered march forward.

(...without the er other right leg she was standing on aka the boyfriend! altho haha that would be walking around in a circle, forget i said anything)

it's at once vulnerable as it is resolute, basically, and it kills.

13. Cassie - Me & U
(74.5 points, 5 votes)

via Youtube

http://ilx2006music.googlepages.com/meandu.jpg

Cassie's voice might be thin, but it's also hard to get out of your head. I've never been to a dance club, but I always picture Cassie being that girl who makes eye contact with you from across the dancefloor. You know? The one who comes over in the middle of "No Diggity" and whispers sweet, seductive phrases in your ear? She's just so addictive and irresistible. And along with this mostly simplistic beat, she's hypnotic.

Because the song is so shy, whenever it wants to climax--whenever Cassie wants to take it to the hotel room, if you will--it's ridiculously effective. And you're left wanting more.

"Kick Push" has just come out over here - achieving the astonishing feat of making me temporarily enthusiastic about the notion of a "golden age" hip hop revival. At least while it's playing, anyway.
-Tim Finney

Call me nostalgic for Native Tongues-style funkiness, but I bought "Kick Push" from iTunes after only very, very randomly catching the video (once) on TV. A lot of so-called backpacker business forgets to engage the "fun" button, but this doesn't.

its the most dramatic track, the most immediate, the most punchy drum wise (meatier) its everything a single ought to be... all the breaths as percussion almost R'n'B allusions, the subtle palm muted rock instrumentation running along with the synth arpeggio... the lyric is a load of nothing, true but it still works brilliantly as some kind of re-imagined 80s pop that actually sounds nothing like anything made in the 80s... a simulacrum that's actually completely contemporaneous...
