speaking of odd combinations of songs that have shown up on this list, this shakira/joy orbison thing that dave moore of this parish made a while back actually works, properly: http://www.mediafire.com/?yhctmzz3jum

So... what's left overall?

My Girls
Stillness Is the Move
1901
Daniel
Two Weeks
Heads Will Roll
Lisztomania
Bad Romance
You Belong with Me
Fancy?
Surf Solar?
House of Flying Daggers?

Pretty sure about the first 9, reasonably sure about the last 3... and that leaves one missing from the top 13.

Five spots left. I can't see "Surf Solar" or "Flying Daggers" going top five, and I'm torn as to whether "My Girls," "Daniel," "Lisztomania" or "Heads Will Roll" won't make the top five... I'd say "Bad Romance" and "You Belong with Me" are locks, but hey, I've been wrong before...

Confident that "Two Weeks" is out of the running, also.

there's a dance remix of bridges & balloons by dj pocket or something similar. apart from being cheesy i don't remember it as being all that bad!

don't hold me to that xp

to jump back, really happy to see the juan maclean "one day" show up! that's a song that i fell deeply in love with for like three weeks and then somehow forgot existed. the remix is pretty hard too

goole, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link

xp ilxor: considering that GB only got five votes on the GAPDY poll, I think it is safe to assume that you're right (FWIW I thought Vecktamist was a bit overrated, tho "Two Weeks" is a fine song & was on my list).

considering that GB only got five votes on the GAPDY poll,

Precisely what sold me on "Two Weeks" being absent. I'll admit it's one of Grizzly Bear's better songs, if such a thing exists. ;)

ahhh who was it who pointed out that the "smooth criminal" bite on "tirsdagsjam" is a really great foreshadowing of lindstrøm's jackson pastiche on "baby can't stop"

That was me on my LJ.

Glad I stuck around at work until #6 was posted now :)

I'm also glad the album version got the lion's share of the points. The Aeroplane remixes are good, but the 'original' trumps all.

I think this also justifies my position that the L&C album should have stayed on the ballot. It would have done well!

Jeff W, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

^ This is probably the song I'll most associate with my own personal 2009 for years to come.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Phoenix track is decent! I hadn't heard it before.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Echoing lex from some earlier thread: I get why Phoenix is popular, I get why people like the songs, I just don't get why they are phenomenal enough to show up near the top of all these year-end lists, including ours. The songs are catchy and fun and lighthearted if you're into that sort of thing, but is it really that *exciting* after 5+ spins?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

yah lol, the guy isnt a good enough singer tho imo

No, no matter how much you'd like to think that, nothing justifies a 2010 album placing on a 2009 poll.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link

eh 'lasso' the jam off that album

goole, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Jeff W, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

girlfriend imo

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I do really like the last two minutes of that Dirty Projectors song but I just didn't like the album on the whole. The vocals totally ruin it for me, I think I actually prefer her voice to his though.

That's the first time I've seen the video, there's something really annoying about the dancing in it

I only just heard the Lindstrom & Christabelle album yesterday so hadn't heard that song before voting, it would have been on my list for sure.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno i probably listened to that phoenix album more than any other album this year. which doesn't mean it was my favorite but it's just really damn listenable.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm in the same boat re: Phoenix.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Lisztomania just soundtracked a lot of the things I'll remember about 2009, though. It seemed to be omnipresent in the world surrounding me.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I hadn't heard (of) Phoenix before and thought I was through with that sort of thing, but I like this.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:39 (fourteen years ago) link

the instrumental passages of "1901" reminds me of Obstacle 1 from Interpol as performed by the Killers.

^^ this is a pretty good summary of why i roll my damn eyes @ phoenix

Assuming Reverend's predictions are right, I'm now looking at tons of songs in the 50 and thinking, b-b-but this isn't better than Daniel. I'm getting non-voter's remorse - that would have been in my top 3 with Zero and The Fear.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:41 (fourteen years ago) link

The dif between Phoenix and Interpol/The Killers, though, is that they don't seem aggressively fame hungry. They're more concerned with making perfect-sounding records (something I'm sure was considered by Air when they brought them all together as a backing band).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I really loved those first two Phoenix albums and would name Too Young as one of the best songs of the last decade but the latest stuff just leaves me cold. I really can't put my finger on why? I think I just want more songs like If I Ever Feel Better and Everything is Everything.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:44 (fourteen years ago) link

b-b-but this isn't better than Daniel

I voted for Pearl's Dream, but I'll be disappointed if Bat for Lashes doesn't get in when a lame-o Florence & The Machine remix does.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:45 (fourteen years ago) link

everything is everything and if I ever feel better are all time

cozen, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I know nothing about Interpol (except for their original pre-fame drummer was Greg Drudy who rules), the Killers nor Phoenix, I'm merely basing my impression on their sound, matter of fact!

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I get the impression I would like Phoenix's early stuff better, it's just that their new stuff doesn't make me interested in hearing it.

hahahahahahahahaha okay I have JUST NOW realized what song "1901" is

cell phone ads are like ground zero for half of these bands, huh

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

i think "daniel" was the only indie track i voted for - in principle i don't have a problem with it not being on the list but given some of the stuff that's in its place...

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

know yr ads! "1901" sells Cadillacs.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

actually, looking fwd to 1901 on Rock Band, seems like it would be a fun song to play on a video game which is a pretty late 00s way of evaluating music.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

even i like "if i ever feel better" - there were some great filter house remixes of phoenix around that time too - the new stuff is soooo not as good but i totally understand the "generic comfort food" justification for liking them, i value that stuff a lot too

don't see how a lack of fame hunger has any effect on how they come across to me (other than that they sure are a lot more faceless than the Killers, for better or worse)

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, it probably shouldn't. I just appreciate bands who are total studio rats and only go play live out of obligation.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

btw as someone who has been experiencing phoenix's old records for the first time in the last two weeks or so, i'd strongly encourage people to give them a chance as they're quite different from the newer stuff.

i loved when noz tweeted after pazz & jop "i youtubed some 'indie rock' songs i didn't recognize from the p&j list but it turns out that i already do know them from tv commercials."

Joanna Newsom vs Dirty Projectors is amazing BTW

also the DP singing is not nearly as off-putting next to JN
