hat is not at all what I'm saying. Stop inventing stupid, asinine arguments and pretending like they're my positions.

Stop fighting and start demanding #6!

if I am taking too long to post the next one it is not because I am trying to draw it out! I get on calls and meetings which unfortunately take precedence over "internet polls," or so I imagine my manager would think.

musically, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:03 (fourteen years ago) link

let's not pretend Newsom's "thing" is some kind of wildly inventive Meredith Monk singing. she just puts on a weird affect and belts it out.

― Mordy, Tuesday, February 2, 2010 9:00 PM (1 minute ago)

The inventiveness of her music isn't her voice, it's her craft - the songwriting, sense of movement and melody, and her way with words. very few albums of the last album flowed so naturally through so many gorgeous melodies as 'Ys'.

Your manager has odd priorities.

just noticed the title is probably "Baby Can't Stop"?

It's kind of hard to appreciate the gorgeous melodies when they're being song by someone who sounds like a goose being put through a garlic press.

In fact, one might expect shellshocked laughter to be the initial response.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Btw, I don't really get the Lindstrom + Christabelle thing.

Mordy, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, she's a fine harpist (is that the word?), but she needs to take a back seat on her own recordings when it comes to singing. Do a Carlos Santana deal and bring in your pals.

It's a nice song, but it sounds like a lot of other music I've heard -- it's not particularly memorable or distinguishable to me. (the Lindstrom - not the Newsom)

ahhh who was it who pointed out that the "smooth criminal" bite on "tirsdagsjam" is a really great foreshadowing of lindstrøm's jackson pastiche on "baby can't stop"

The Lindstrøm & Christabelle thing is just a really good nouveau disco track, though I was slightly disappointed by the album as a whole for not making a real effort.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Sweet, we have two Newsom threads running simultaneously now!

ksh, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i got really stressed out a few hours ago trying to do five things at once and i put on the lindstrøm & christabelle album and it really worked a treat in calming me

btw the first one is not a remix, it's the original mix

speaking of odd combinations of songs that have shown up on this list, this shakira/joy orbison thing that dave moore of this parish made a while back actually works, properly: http://www.mediafire.com/?yhctmzz3jum

So... what's left overall?

My Girls
Stillness Is the Move
1901
Daniel
Two Weeks
Heads Will Roll
Lisztomania
Bad Romance
You Belong with Me
Fancy?
Surf Solar?
House of Flying Daggers?

Pretty sure about the first 9, reasonably sure about the last 3... and that leaves one missing from the top 13.

― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, February 1, 2010 4:13 PM (Yesterday)

Five spots left. I can't see "Surf Solar" or "Flying Daggers" going top five, and I'm torn as to whether "My Girls," "Daniel," "Lisztomania" or "Heads Will Roll" won't make the top five... I'd say "Bad Romance" and "You Belong with Me" are locks, but hey, I've been wrong before...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Confident that "Two Weeks" is out of the running, also.

5. Lisztomania
4. My Girls
3. Heads Will Roll
2. Bad Romance
1. You Belong With Me

there's a dance remix of bridges & balloons by dj pocket or something similar. apart from being cheesy i don't remember it as being all that bad!

to jump back, really happy to see the juan maclean "one day" show up! that's a song that i fell deeply in love with for like three weeks and then somehow forgot existed. the remix is pretty hard too

goole, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link

xp ilxor: considering that GB only got five votes on the GAPDY poll, I think it is safe to assume that you're right (FWIW I thought Vecktamist was a bit overrated, tho "Two Weeks" is a fine song & was on my list).

considering that GB only got five votes on the GAPDY poll,

Precisely what sold me on "Two Weeks" being absent. I'll admit it's one of Grizzly Bear's better songs, if such a thing exists. ;)

That was me on my LJ.

Glad I stuck around at work until #6 was posted now :)

I'm also glad the album version got the lion's share of the points. The Aeroplane remixes are good, but the 'original' trumps all.

I think this also justifies my position that the L&C album should have stayed on the ballot. It would have done well!

^ This is probably the song I'll most associate with my own personal 2009 for years to come.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Phoenix track is decent! I hadn't heard it before.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Echoing lex from some earlier thread: I get why Phoenix is popular, I get why people like the songs, I just don't get why they are phenomenal enough to show up near the top of all these year-end lists, including ours. The songs are catchy and fun and lighthearted if you're into that sort of thing, but is it really that *exciting* after 5+ spins?
