i like the "i look at the sun and i look in the mirror..." line in The Fear. SO CLEVARR,

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

YES!! <3<3<3 this track!

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

'the fear' is great, and the fact that i associate it with Match of the Day goal of the month nominee clips doesn't work against it.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

xxpost - yeah I could really just listen to an album of Lily reciting a phone book & I would be happy.

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

lol i just got the "sun/mirror" line. btw i'll be the first to say that this still hasn't turned into the indie-fest everyone predicted, so no more whining :)

een, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

how many chickens u got then?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:18 (fourteen years ago) link

"the fear" is great, totally won me over to lily as a former hater

YESSSS!!!

I liked Lily's first album/singles, but LOVED the second album and all its singles. Sometimes I get so fanned-out I feel like one of those girls screaming for The Beatles on Ed Sullivan.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i had never heard the ciara remix of Blame It! It's an improvement!

did y'all hear her anti-war TROOF BOMB 'Kabul Shit'?

especially as you look at this stuff when you're older and remember some of the shit you used to do, it doesn't seem as unambiguously celebratory to me as it did when I first heard it

not to harp on, but i think this tenuously connects to my feeling about the break before mazel tov, it's the moment when your drunk friend is either gonna hit you or hug you, and if you're not jewish then mazel tov is such a dumbsillyperfect resolution of that, i mean c'mon lex, it's such a loved-up thing to say!

since i've been on an annoying pop kick, wanna counter by repping once again for Future of the Left upthread, that track is incendiary and i don't feel like enough people have listened to it.

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:28 (fourteen years ago) link

if anything "mazel tov" seems a bit try-hard to me, it's a bit...i got her...GROCERY BAG

really gald to see the fear make it - i am also in the crowd that was totally converted by her second album, and that song is great.

I know a lot of people were down on this year's Junior Boys album, but I'm surprised Hazel didn't crack the top 50 trax (I don't see it coming up in the top 8, anyway).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Hazel is v good and so is its Ewan P remix. don't think Begone Dull Care was really a step down from So This Is Goodbye either.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I like Begone Dull Care as well, but we seem to be a vocal minority.

xxpostz: voted for Jnr Boys in my album and trax (choosing Bits & Pieces), but would be surprised if it showed.

Expecting someting Fuck Buttons, Bats for Lash, and Lindstrom / Christabelle and obv My Girls will be #1

xpost: Petr Andre - get the fuck....

if anything "mazel tov" seems a bit try-hard to me, it's a bit...i got her...GROCERY BAG

lol yes i had this exact thought myself, but once out of a hip hop context they make it make sense narratively to me, i mean the song is all about being out with friends and feeling good about that so it's not coincidence that the "punchline" is reaching out to who filled your cup and to the whole world. like i wrote about one possible narrative above, which may be projecting or reaching, but i think probably hi dere is right and that the whole song has this subtext or tension where things could go wrong, but they don't, and i think people relate to that.

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

"i gotta feeling" is the hope, isn't it

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I like Begone Dull Care as well, but we seem to be a vocal minority.

well its OK, is what i'm sayin. didn't make my top 20 tho.

08 -- Shakira - She Wolf (7 votes, 88.5 points for Loba (#356 in P&J)) (17 votes, 216 points) (56 in P&J, DNP in p4k)

"Loba is so much better in Spanish. I can see that awkwardness is part of her appeal, but I like her awkward and charming, not awkward and silly. She's good, and this is a disco stomper." -Ismael Klata

musically, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:50 (fourteen years ago) link

idk as drinking, partying songs of 09, gimme "drink in my cup" any day over BEPs

xp god "she wolf" is overrated

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Best thing about She Wolf is the video.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago) link

anyone predicting indie domination of top ten not feelin so smart right now..

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, there's still 7 more to go.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

And there's only one legit rap track in the top 20 so far (because fuck a BEP).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i love that shakira exists

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

("In the NA" never had a chance... *sadface*)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:59 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i can get down to / get with that Shakira track more than any BEP

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:00 (fourteen years ago) link

(of course another way it makes sense dramatically is the pause for pouring)

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i love that shakira exists

me too, but neither version of "she wolf" does much for me.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i kind of feel that the way people go on about "she wolf", it should be one of those irresistible pop songs that i crave to hear over and over again, on loop for an hour, but months on i'm still stuck in the "eh, don't mind this when it comes on" stage.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link

nb i do <3 shakira of course, my fav shakira song is "underneath your clothes" by miles

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link

I like her Timbaland song a little more but "She Wolf" is fun enough for me.

also yes she is smokin' hot and that totally biases me towards the appreciation of her music

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:11 (fourteen years ago) link

my fav shakira song is "underneath your clothes" by miles

pretty much all the singles from that album trump her subsequent english-language singles, imo. i'm not a big "hips don't lie" fan either (partly because of ugh-wyclef).

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

"objection (tango)" <3 <3 <3

i think...i feel her voice just works better with more, uh, organic arrangements?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago) link

like i buy her more as a kooky folkie rather than some sort of disco diva

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

just to clarify, cuz I'm dense: she wolf represents votes cast for 'she wolf' AND 'loba', right?
