unexpected but awesome

Roz, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been away, so just catching up with this, and just in time ...
Good track, although I didn't vote for it. I really thought Floating Points or Love the Night Away would have made the 50, but can't see them in the top 10, so a bit surprised.

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

wow, was not expecting but am SO approving of "one day" - it's such a great pop song, my second fav on the album after "the simple life". the album seems to have been forgotten in the EOYs (and it is a touch patchy) but it's fantastic to see its best cuts get recognition.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i gotta pick up that juan maclean album

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

echoing the not-expecting-but-approving sentiment, really good song & pleasant surprise

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

pleasant surprise - great single from my favourite album of last year

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, I didn't vote for it in the end thinking that DJ Kaos would do better. happy to see it there.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I think it might do OK in the albums poll - I voted for it, anyway. Accusations is my fave track off it, though.

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

ha!! awesome! another from my ballot

So far, all these have showed:

Azari & III - voted Hungry For The Power, but Reckless does me fine anytime
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
Juan Maclean, The - One Day (Surkin mix)
Memory Tapes - voted Stop Talking, but Bicycle is equally great.

Fingers x'd for Lindstrom/Christabelle will be happy.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

oh, also voted for the Guido

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

what the hell is that surkin remix video?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I would've thought that "ecstasy" by jj would have easily made the top 50, but I'm not sure I see it creeping into the top ten at this point..

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Wish I'd have voted for 'One Day', dunno why I didn't.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

what the hell is that surkin remix video?

i'm sure the youtube comments justify its making

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

whoa i forgot about "ecstasy"

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Thinking back on the all the stuff I didn't vote for I must have been out of my mind.

also, guess ILM not big fans of that Japandroids tune?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i like japandroids but for me they weren't really trax worthy

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:30 (fourteen years ago) link

i think i've only heard that one song but it's pretty great.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not one to 'check out albums' though

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm generally a fan of Juan Maclean, but I do not get the appeal of that track at all.

lou, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:33 (fourteen years ago) link

then you must be exceptionally general

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

what the hell is that surkin remix video?

If that wasn't on youtube, I would have expected a bj while they were driving in the car. Very odd video.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess. Seems pretty lifeless compared to Happy House or Give Me Every Little Thing though.
x-post

lou, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

wow that JM track is awesome, hadn't even heard anything from that album yet

The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:40 (fourteen years ago) link

dude, do it the album is so much better than "young hearts spark fire" (and i love/voted for that song)

een, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

b/w the top then reveal here, the Lost ssn 6 premiere tonight & it being Groundhog Day, I'm not sure if my body and mind can handle this much excitement.

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

how can one work on a day such as today?

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

plus the top 100 films of the decade poll might start counting down tomorrow!

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:44 (fourteen years ago) link

the album seems to have been forgotten in the EOYs (and it is a touch patchy)

Probably the biggest omission I've noticed also. It made my year-end top ten list (would've been top 3-5 if I'd bothered ranking the damn thing).

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:44 (fourteen years ago) link

this is going to be the year that everyone realizes the importance of ranking

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i gave 'young hearts spark fire' a bunch of pts too..maybe it has a chance? i still doubt it. album will def place

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:46 (fourteen years ago) link

just FYI there are about 60 points between #9 and #1, so any of you who didn't vote should feel very ashamed right now

musically, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Number 9?

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i still don't get why "mazel tov" is meant to be funny

it's the surprise attack of a mostly minority group, who came from hip hop and probably still code as "urban" to a lot of people, using a phrase outside their tribe that makes it this universal melting pot celebratory moment, and this also demonstrates how this is a phrase reached for in absolute elation. Like was so going for it last night i was saying fuckin mazel tov! you can hear it in the way will.i.am slides up on cuuuUUUUP like it could almost be going somewhere dangerous, then the break, then the perfectly timed "punchline". it's le mot juste.

zvookster, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess. Seems pretty lifeless compared to Happy House or Give Me Every Little Thing though.

it is more of a "pop song" than either of those, so idk how that squares with "lifeless" and its certainly synthier (no bass guitar). i think the only problem with it is it feels a bit stilted at times, the arrangement is a bit off. it actually sounds like a radio edit on the album when there should really be a lengthier version with all the different components given more time to flourish, build and blend together. i think there was some vague agreement about this on the JM thread (and also how none of the remixes quite did it justice either), and i think even Juan said himself he wasn't completely satisfied with the arrangement (other tracks on the album have similar probs where you just think 'this is almost perfect but for these slight arrangement niggles e.g. Tonight). i still found it less patchy than any other album i heard last year tho.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link

And Oscar nominations!

xpost plus the Surkin mix completely reinvigorates it and into something approaching perfection (imo)

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

*has stroke* xpost

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link

blueski- Yeah, that's probably a more accurate description of what bothers me about One Day. And I do think I just prefer Juan in "trackier" mode. I don't think his strength lies in writing pop songs. Always felt the same way about LCD Soundsystem, who I gave up on long ago.

lou, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link

many xps but eh, I feel like saying something positive about "I Got A Feeling"

really the "MAZEL TOV!" isn't the funny bit IMO, it's the autotuned "L'Chaim!" that gets thrown in on the third go round

I like the way the song just builds and builds and builds and builds right up to the ending; also, I like how the video builds along with until at the end you have people falling out all over the place, ending with them all destroyed and passed out in super vulnerable positions because of how hard they went the previous night. I don't know if the subversion is intentional or not (they sort of make a point of not showing the band as out of control train wrecks) but, especially as you look at this stuff when you're older and remember some of the shit you used to do, it doesn't seem as unambiguously celebratory to me as it did when I first heard it.

Ultimately I just like big-ass stadium bangers; I was down with "Zombie Nation", I was down with "Twilight Zone" and I'm down with BEP. Hell, if you want to go there, I would still rep for Smart Es and Alpha Team if anyone besides me was going to be willing to bring them up.

09 -- Lily Allen - The Fear (16 votes, 206.5 points, 3 #1 vote/s) (21 in P&J, 31 in p4k)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn7ziS43YHs

"I don't know what's right and what's real any more" could cover a lot of ground in a discussion about modern anomie and solipsism, and so it's nice to see that wind up in a pop song, I guess. As a tune I find "The Fear" enjoyable, and even the parts of the song that didn't work for me at first, like the lines about people dying to obtain diamonds and how the world isn't about mothers any more, end up fitting in with the song's themes because their vaguely self-righteous, phoney, and didactic tone almost work as a parody. The irony that, while trying to sound deep, Allen still says something cliche and shallow only adds to the song's point about modern superficiality and blurred reality. -Cunga

Yay, it made it!!!!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i should add 'One Day' is relatively fast (tho actually sounds better pitched down a bit, maybe even 10bpm slower) for an actual song like that, and it seems like quite a challenge to make a duet work at that tempo along with the range of hooks and details it does have. trying to think of a Human League song with similar structure and speed but can't!

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

(stupid labels that still prohibit embeds in NOT GETTING IT SHOCKAH)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i like the "i look at the sun and i look in the mirror..." line in The Fear. SO CLEVARR,

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

YES!! <3<3<3 this track!

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

'the fear' is great, and the fact that i associate it with Match of the Day goal of the month nominee clips doesn't work against it.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

xxpost - yeah I could really just listen to an album of Lily reciting a phone book & I would be happy.

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

lol i just got the "sun/mirror" line. btw i'll be the first to say that this still hasn't turned into the indie-fest everyone predicted, so no more whining :)
