For my money, American Gangster is Jay-Z's best album since Reasonable Doubt. I like it even better than the Blueprint and the Black Album.

co-sign

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 February 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

1. Reasonable Doubt
2. American Gangster
3. The Blueprint
4. Vol. 1
5. The Black Album
6. Vol. 3
7. Vol. 2
8. Roc La Familia*
9. Kingdom Come*
10. Blueprint 2
11. Blueprint 3*

Though these are probably due for some re-appraisal.

one thing I have learned is not to talk to anyone on ILM about Jay-Z

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Monday, 1 February 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago) link

better than the blueprint!!!!???

Yeah. Ignoring the historical significance, that is. There's a lot more depth of emotion and thought on American Gangster, whereas on The Blueprint he's more like a sociopath faking emotion. (Which is doubly funny because AG is the one where he's supposedly role-playing.) Plus, AG has ballsier production and just plain better songs--"Ignorant Shit," "No Hook," "Success," "American Dreamin'," "Blue Magic."

Had you not heard them before, Dan? They're Mclusky 2.0 (can't remember how many members made the move).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 February 2010 17:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Heard of them, never heard them; was really only tangentially aware of McClusky via Joel Veitch Rathergood.com.

I love the line "caught in the switch of the flow," on that FotL song. So great, especially with that full-throttle delivery. The climax of that song has so much more drama, for want of a better word, than it has any right to. Shit just sounds huge and important. Fucking brilliant.

They're Mclusky 2.0 (can't remember how many members made the move).

If I recall, the guitarist/vocalist and the drummer made the move; the bassist split off into another band.

it sort of arrived pre-pasted.

and as someone who kinda dug mcclusky and then forgot about them, i'm now intrigued by fotl. that song rocks pretty well.

by the way The Dynasty album is the second best Jay album, so you list makers are tripping.

that's an agreeable spot for 'empire state of mind' -- 'american gangster' is NOT GOOD AT ALL - can't believe actual critics fell for that junk - it's pretty good sonically but jay never stopped falling off as a rapper after 'kingdom come'

So is the rest of this FotL album as good as this?

not as immediate/anthemic as that but it's a fantastic record

wonder if "heads will roll" is gonna show up - don't dislike "zero" at all but compared to HWR it's kinda negligible to me
