Leno vs Conan WAHT TEH FUCK

I don't know which makes less sense: using Jay Leno as a conservative mouthpiece, ignoring the flack Jackson took in the immediate 'hymietown' aftermath, or the fact that THERE IS NO REASON IN HEAVEN OR ON EARTH FOR JAY LENO AND CONAN O'BRIEN TO BE TOGETHER IN THIS CARTOON

also, no joeks.

and what, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

IIRC, Jackson paid a price for the hymietown...and still is.

but yeah, the CF lightbulb stip is actually funny. Anyway, we bought ours at Home Depot. Make sure you get the ones with the Energy Saver logo on them, because the others buzz.

dan selzer, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

anyone see the Bill OReilly vs. Wes Clarke fight bout Soros. Great stuff.

dan selzer, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Home Depot had that neat little promotion on Earth Day where you could show up and get a free compact bulb. Wish I would have taken advantage of that.

kingfish, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

The Energy Star logo, you mean? I haven't seen any other kind.

But yeah, I love mine. The light is just fine.

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait - is that FoxNews SOROS ---> MAINSTREAM MEDIA graphic actually real?

David R., Friday, 11 May 2007 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

MORMONS SHARPTON

i'd like to see the ones he threw away before he decided this was just creepily racist enough to be acceptable.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah. That is an actual screenshot. Ol' Bill went tearin' after Soros around April 20th or so. The graphic is from the Crooksandliars vid of the segment.

I'm disappointed they left out the Rand Corporation and the reverse vampires.

kingfish, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah Energy Star. The brand they were selling at Home Depot, they all had similar packaging but only some of them had the Energy Star logo. I think the ones without are meant for out-doors or whatever. Anyway, just be careful.

Because every dollar spent on counterterrorism is
working out so well now.

"Our little elementary school is more of a target than the White House," says McLaughlin, an animated man who wears a white uniform shirt equipped with the kind of stars given to military generals. "We saw it in the Soviet Union. The Chechens took one. We can’t let our guard down."

I'd just like to highlight these two, from the Clay Jones link upthread a bit:

A quite loverly quote from kingfish's second link:

"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security does not review spending by police departments and other agencies, a spokeswoman said. Audits by the federal Government Accountability Office have so far only examined how quickly grant money is spent, not what it has purchased."

...political cartoonists need to show televisions in their cartoons because that’s the only way to show Americans interacting with information

kingfish, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

The Leno/Conan one feels like it's the middle of a much longer narrative. Some sort of editorial cartoon graphic novel maybe?

"...and no one says a word about the blatant hypocrisy of it all."

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 13 May 2007 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

The Rudy one isn't all that batshit insane, although it's quite poorly drawn. I'd like to see a book that shows longitudinally the way caricature of various figures developed as their time in the spotlight went on - is it a continuous improvement or is there a moment when suddenly everybody gets the memo about how to draw Public Figure X?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 14 May 2007 09:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Every time I look @ one of those "day by day" strips, I want actual physical harm to come to the artist.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 14 May 2007 09:37 (sixteen years ago) link

These Day By Day things are amazing, I'm looking at some of the older ones and I can't work out why this person decided they wanted to draw things for a living.

http://www.daybydaycartoon.com/cartoons/02-07-2005.gif

You want to show a university in your cartoon but you don't feel like drawing today. You know that universities often look like big houses, but with columns and cloisters and stuff. Do you a) Do a GIS for "University" and stick that picture in the strip? Or do you b) GIS "big house" and "columns" and cut and paste the columns onto the house, knowing that people will logically figure out it's a university?

Ha, yeah that Day by Day guy has a real thing for that particular ass-angle, doesn't he? Just in case any readers forget that these soldiers are women and women are for sexin'. But only by men.

Today's round:

Without commenting on the usual copy-pasted ass, this idiot reportedly went to Iraq, and these are the insights he came back with to fill his cartoons.

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/PN051507.jpg

Have fun with this one:

http://www.creators.com/comics/37/5750_thumb.jpg

We either have:

1) head of syria = our enemies
2) syrians = saudis, or maybe this guys seem them all as towelheads
3) doing anything other than sending other people's kids to die is "making nice," i.e. basic functions of state diplomacy and negotiation is both failure and the craven appeasement from pussies
4) wtf with the spade nose?
5) Josh was right again in last week's Cartoon Violence; the only way we can show americans interacting with information is to show them watching tv, and we as the audience need to see the tv b/c watching tv is fun.
6) ...?(write in your own)

http://jewishworldreview.com/strips/pc/pc051407.jpg

This was such a great joke/talking point that we needed to use it again, almost word for word, in consecutive strips.

All hail The Breck Girl.

One of the reasons I dig trolling thru this shit is that I find it fascinating how the usual rightwing talking points, no matter how incoherent, disingenious, hateful, or incorrect, get pushed by not only the usual coterie of rightwing broadcast and print blowhards, but also the drawers, too.

And remember, if you have money, if you care about anybody else, if you talk about it, and if you're not possessed by a single-minded nature to accrue as much shit and power in your corner and to fuck over everybody else, you're a craven, lying hypocrite who deserves to be personally attacked. If you're not squatting in it, you should shut the fuck up and let God's appointed leaders go about their business.

Then there's the whole hilariously insecure/macho/anti-metro reactionary bit, that only them hom'sexuals give a shit about how they look, and if you do too, you're so emasculated that you might as well be wearin' a dress. It's like these guys' heads would explode if shaving kits became popular again.

This kind of art has been martialled and deployed in political campaigns for at least 500 years, it really is not very surprising or even remarkable. Implying that a candidate is gay, or too feminine, or whatever. It's base and it works. Prepare yourself for a mega-dose of this crap whichever Democrate gets nominated. They will be painted as slightly weird, off-kilter, fake, overambitious, unsure of who they are, etc. etc. What is surprising and remarkable is that Democrats seems so perpetually surprised by it when it happens, and so unprepared to fight it.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not so much that assertion that I single out, but more this particular instance where one little mistake/media event thing was seized upon as an aperture to let all the usual emasculating bullshit to flow in. Such things are the source of the usual bullshit narratives that get promulgated by "serious" NYT/WaPo punditry.

Or do these guys just have no memory retention beyond the three latest Enemies of Freedom?

Mike Dixn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Like with everybody else in american media, those who got everything about iraq wrong are still used as serious expects, and everybody who actually knew what the fuck they were talking about should not be consulted as they are obviously unserious partisians.
