just saying that as is obv from reading here or blogs or fact or wherever, people tend to give the spotlight to their mates. hence the coverage you see and who its by. plus people cover the circles theyre into.

xlr8r asked me to do the piece on night slugs, i didnt pitch it. and i agreed that the night deserved to be covered (it is the best clubnight in london, i'm not just saying that cos i know them) so it happened.

ive been trying to do a big interview with marcus for fact for ages, but he changes his number and doesnt answer his twitter and it's not really happened so far.

Luka rightly recommended this dude:

http://soundcloud.com/ossieproducer/

But while his funky stuff is great, his R&B remixes are even better I reckon - lovely and unsettling.

Tim F, Sunday, 31 January 2010 13:14 (fourteen years ago) link

the production on "she got that" is amazing - love that techy/tribal beats + airy euphoric synths - makes me wish more people picked up on the booka shadeisms of "our father". wish the dudes made better use of it though.

have you heard major not£$' cover of "friend of mine"?? it's brilliant (and such a great song to revive). (also, note spelling of major not£$ - not sure if this is how he spells it all the time but i've seen it like this and it's amazing)

Lex read upthread we've been talking about "Friend of Mine" for ages ha ha. Yes it's amazing, though it took me one or two listens to work out just how much - the beat, the vocal, the lyrics.

The only reason I don't do dude's name properly is I forget how to do the pound symbol on my keyboard and then just putting the dollar symbol seems wrong by itself.

Tim F, Sunday, 31 January 2010 13:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Obv the lyrics are from Kelly Price - I just mean that the package comes together so well here, cheater/heartbreak songs are so great in vocal house.

Tim F, Sunday, 31 January 2010 13:24 (fourteen years ago) link

oh yeah Ossie is great. Set the Tone has been my m.f. jams... soulful in the classic sense.

Broad question, I’d be interested to hear any thoughts...

From interactions, observations or second hand tales, does anyone have a strong idea of why so little of the best funky is making it through to releases?

Not just vinyl but mp3... I know there are more mp3 releases about than it can first appear, but even then there are many anthems and incredible tracks from the last 2 years (or more) that I haven't seen the slightest indication of release for.

Do you think it’s just that there isn't enough money in it unless it’s done in a big way (i.e. itunes + video + publicity), and for the kind of tracks that non-djs would buy? Certainly in the case of vinyl I can well imagine that it’s purely to do with profit margins, given that 12s like Liberty and Pain are still taking up space in record stores all over the place

I guess an obvious place to look is puregrime and leaking, it’s actually a farce how much unreleased material is available on there. So I guess maybe a lot of djs actually play out with these leaked mp3s too

Benjamin, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Looking back at that I perhaps overstate the case, when i think about it a fair few of the best tracks have made it out eventually, but nonetheless i think there is something in it

Benjamin, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:00 (fourteen years ago) link

No idea why funky isn't making it out... certainly melodic enough.

A few decent producers but it's not floating my boat in all honesty.... that said if it lightens the dubstep scene I'll be grateful.

Cream Of Some Young Guy, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:44 (fourteen years ago) link

to be honest i think itd be better if all the scenes just went their own way. if anything funky is taking the best bits from grime and dubstep more succesfully/interestingly, just cos its still at that developmental stage.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

why is it i sometimes read people talking about funky/'the ends' audience like theyre doing some sort of anthropological exercise?

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 4 February 2010 10:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha ha go on titchy, what did you just read?

Tim F, Thursday, 4 February 2010 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

@ titchy - got a better way of explaining how and why these scenes evolve the way they do?

Martinclark, Thursday, 4 February 2010 10:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont want to get into a slanging match. i have stuff i need to do today without message boarding.

clarkness, i dont, but i dunno, it just seems a bit... stiff? like people are david attenborough watching some buffalo run away from a tiger through the bushes or something. or some national geographic thing.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 4 February 2010 11:06 (fourteen years ago) link

"@ titchy - got a better way of explaining how and why these scenes evolve the way they do?"

I know the question wasn't for me, but isn't that basically asking "have you got a better way of conducting an anthropological exercise than with an anthropological exercise?"?

If you're talking about scenes, in the sense of something rooted in the social and physical, rather than purely about music, then isn't it inherently anthropological?

Benjamin, Thursday, 4 February 2010 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

the dancehall crossover/bashment funky is some of my favorite stuff..

geeneus' new mixtape with katy b is awesome - their version of "good life"!! one of those tracks that seems like it was always destined for a funky version http://www.thefader.com/2010/02/04/geeneus-f-katy-b-tippa-mixtape-mp3/

might just be being grumpy but that strikes me like it the wrong sort of cheese 4 funky, i dunno...? would just whack the accapella over karizma '33rd street anthem' for the epic vibes myself maybe.

the last one i think is a really lovely show from the best selector on the scene asa far as im concerned. maybe the worst at mixing....but i can overlook that.... lots of u.s stuff to begin with then it gets deep and dirty...tracklisting included....

http://vulive.co.uk/content/2010/01/31/weeksey-22-jan-2010/

that link got mangled for me but i'm guessing it's this weeksey show yeah?

been meaning to ask what's good on vu these days - i listened to a danny native one a while back and he introed with a seriously random undie rap selection and then once he got into the house he dropped a mf doom funky refix. not good. this has got some good bits on there tho, i liked 'restless native' if memory serves:

ahh groove theory is a great vocal to use!! (on that unknown strangers myspace). kinda wish they'd approached it with a bit more 2step finesse mind.

minor distinctions but this new version turns a footnote into a hit imo

aidonia is a such a career biter it almost pains me to say that.

r|t|c, Friday, 5 February 2010 15:59 (fourteen years ago) link

part 6?? (did u hear that part 2 with the zombified lollop in the end btw.

I listened to that radio set and... isn't that just part 1 (although the organ hits seem to be double rather than single) with a short bit of another tune (that sort of lethargic but dramatic tuba synth-bass lurch) at the end? Or maybe not? I'm sure I've heard that lurch bit heaps of times before though, now I'll have to work out if it's always at the end of "House Girls". It sounds a lot like the even-more-lethargic tuba bass in "Tribal Conga" so I assume it's by Devine either way.

Tim F, Friday, 5 February 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i mostly just listen to the weeksey ones off deja becasue all the other shows involve me wading through too much shit and i dont have the time or the patience.
this is the feb 1st one....

DJ Petchy with MCs Topsee & Dream on LiveFMUK 13.02.10

i've only just heard of Petchy but he is so good!! so many amazing tracks and his mixing and cutting is outrageous, within 2 shows he has become one of my favourite djs, no joke. but the mc's i think are very very good also, the vibe they bring between all of them is very very big

i recognised a few tracks but loads i didn't. felt People Keep Dancing for the first time properly, it sounded amazing coming out of the mix

Benjamin, Sunday, 14 February 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i know that boy petchy.... he is now one of the regulars at soul sure at pacha if you want to see him live. he gave me the first indication of the funky takeover when he sold all his grime records and replaced them with funky in something stupid like 2004.

Luka, Monday, 15 February 2010 05:35 (fourteen years ago) link

theres a kano lyric that mentions him too...
'heartless crew and M.A.D tapes grew me...cant forget to big up petchy and scoobee'

that's interesting Luka. i'd noticed he'd played at pacha a bit i'm gonna keep an eye out and go down sometime. i'm sure he'd play quite different styles to radio in a spot like that but i'm sure it'd be very heavy. i saw a youtube of him playing a tune by that guy Ossie down there in and out of two very big tracks so definitely worth reaching!

Benjamin, Monday, 15 February 2010 22:11 (fourteen years ago) link

he was one of the best djs in grime when he was still doing that...him and mak 10 were way ahead of everyone else.... im glad he's making a name for himself...
