One thing I've noticed about this list, and I guess I might be pointing out the obvious and inevitable, is the heralding of a serious early-90s revival across the board. Girls sounds like something off a Matador compilation from 94, Azari & III is about as N-Joi'd up as it gets, House of House could've been an early Warp single, Fuzzy Logic somehow reminds me of club classics like K-Klass or Robin S.

No it couldn't. Yes it's revivalist - but not of Warp. It's just songful, disco influenced deep vocal house. a la Dubtribe Sound System's "Do It Now".

There's danger in drawing too many conclusions about 90s revivalism from dance music, mainly because about 80% of 90s dance music styles and sounds never went away, and as such have been enjoying "revivals" ever since the beginning of the 00s.

e.g. the Chicago house pop revival Azari & III point to has been sputtering on for ever.

You're possibly right insofar as last year a lot of 90s sounding stuff started to get more attention outside of its immediate fanbase.

If I could be bother wading through stats I'm sure you'd find there's lots of people with that as their one rap choice - which makes it perform better than either better rap (which has a smaller voting bloc plus vote splitting) or indie (which has a much larger voter bloc but also vote splitting).

Tim, I'm sure 90s-sounding stuff has always been coming out, but you're right, it's resurfacing under a wider radar now. Incidentally I used Warp as an example as it's one of the few reference points I could think of (not too up with my various dance styles unfortunately).

But what I mean is that there appears to be a marked aesthetic change from this year's list to previous years in that the only 80s-electro sounding track is that Royksopp thing which, while a very nice track, does sound a bit heard-it-before.

Seems a lot of the dance/hiphop on this thread is starting to take on a certain retro flavour (be it intentional or not). Take the signature "Woo!" samples in that Crazy Cousinz track. Someone was complaining that it sounded snipped and ironic, but it seems like this was the intention all along - it's like a flashback to 1990 when half the dance records in the charts used the same "Ah Yeah" and "Woo-yeh" samples (not to mention Utah Saints trademark "U-u-u-utah Saints"). IIRC this kind of faddy vocal resampling fell out of fashion by the mid-90s (probably after Jungle). Personally, I'm all for this ostensible revival if it exists.

Call me rockist/what have you, but I'm admittedly only a casual listener of commercial hiphop, and practically an R'n'B detractor (save a few records), but I first heard ESOM while dancing on Christmas day. Loved it, it just made the night and since then I've been on a serious urban tip. And topically, the things I've been enjoying most are tracks I more or less ignored in the '90s as a mopey grunge kid. Arrested Development, En Vogue, Young Disciples, Fugees and Blackstreet have been brightening my 2010 no end, along with the Blueprint and certain other things from the '00s. This has made me a lot more open to some things (Electrick Red for example) which I would definitely not given a chance before.

So while ESOM might be bland by comparison to other efforts, I have this to thank for it and I'll rep for it.

still wondering how long it'll take the nyc tourist department to turn "ESOM" into a big national ad campaign. it's what the song was made for.

wow so sorry i missed the girls argument (i was waiting until i had a free 45 minutes to go through all the youtubes). but i do want to say a couple quick things. my main issue with the band is that he's going for a specific pre-1980 classicism and doing it in a v. deliberate and extremely affected way that i personally find results in an absolutely loathsome aesthetic. keep in mind, i am the guy who basically listens to no 1960s american music other than soul and "forever changes" and say what you want about gapdy but they pretty deftly avoid the reference points girls aims for (well maybe anco is onto some 60s psych shit but hey i don't really like them either).

i also think he's an awful and affected singer and found thomas mars' hyperactive broken english nonsense far more interesting and engaging than listening to the girls guy whine (in the most literal dictionary definition of the term) about chicks.

I'm ready for the next track now, musically, when you're ready! Listened to my download comp about three times now. I love nearly everything here (bit lost on Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga just ain't for me, but everything else is at least interesting). Other than Animal Collective (please stop calling them "AnCo") I knew very little on this list up until now. I have the Fever Ray album, but didn't find it as immediate as The Knife and kept putting off listening to it properly. I'd heard the Kid Cudi track on the radio but didn't know what it was. It's a great list though.

I'll rep for ESOM, but I am admittedly a sucker for big-budget, sorta Disnified rap spectacles (see also: Lose Yourself, Hypnotize, etc). And yeah, that chorus (Alicia owns this. All due respect to MJ Blige, but she could not have sold this in the same way).

xxp: not sure why "Hypnotize" falls into that category, other than the video maybe. It doesn't have the overblown, histrionic qualities that ESOM or "Lose Yourself" have. In any case, "Hypnotize" and "Lose Yourself" are much better songs.

i'm so incredibly bad at working out why certain songs cross over beyond their genre to other audiences like this, i'm always like...but this song and that song also had huge choruses and sympathetic narrators, why not them?! i don't even hate ESOM but it just feels so hokey and ho-hum that i have no idea how anyone could love it.

xps - yeah pillbox i get that argument but alicia has another song with a big-budget gargantuan chorus out now which is AMAZING and yet has failed to get similar traction to ESOM!

I thought the Electrick Red track was okay (disclaimer, as mentioned before I'm not a true R'n'B stan, so may not be sure what I'm looking out for here), but it did kind of wash over me. I liked the record-slowing-down effect that takes place at the end of the first verse, but other than that it feels very much by the numbers. What I particularly like about R'n'b girl groups are the harmonies and interplay, but there doesn't seem to be a great deal happening here vocally, other than the surprisingly sweary lyrics. Compared to the vocal gymnastics of (and I know this is an ancient example) En Vogue's "Never Gonna Get It", this is pretty one note. There's neither the exuberance of most Destiny's Child tracks. So I'm not sold yet. I will try the rest of the album when I have a mo though.

I fantasized for a second that the song could be taken literally as a celebration of running a popular neighborhood grocery, but obv. I knew there were seedier elements at play. I'm no stranger to dirty south coke rap, but I don't really keep up on vernacular trends, so only recently learned the *real* meaning of "trap", "ham," "pie" & "yam." I love this track by the way. It certainly would have made the upper end of my list, had it been on my radar earlier.
