GIRLS - ALBUM

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 January 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Jordan, I was trying to analyze why they've blown up. I feel like without the elements I went over they would be a very typical indie band many people would not have heard about or would have gotten very excited about initially.

Evan, Saturday, 30 January 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago) link

'lust for life' is really relatable and beautiful and has a gr8 aesthetic who cares if it sounds like something else from history

also lol @ the idea that girls has 'blown up'

b( ۠·_۠·)b (Lamp), Saturday, 30 January 2010 04:57 (fourteen years ago) link

And I mentioned Vampire Weekend in that last example because I thought it may have something to do with their backlash in the hip/indie community.

This is the kind of thing that makes me think people are lazy about looking for music to like.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 04:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Well you know what I mean, Lamp. They were a big deal last year.

Evan, Saturday, 30 January 2010 04:59 (fourteen years ago) link

ppl really want to listen to this guy whine over "classic pop" chord changes?

is it not possible that lots of people think that the song is actually good? and anyway, this is kind of rehashing territory from the p&j thread, but where is lazy in 09/10? i like girls a lot-- i found out about them because pitchfork and the fader wrote about them, i checked them out and digged their music. now, did i go seek other 60s throwback cali rock like girls this year? no i didn't, but that's cuz i was seeking out tons of other music. i don't think i was being lazy. if i sought out albums that i thought could be better versions of every album from 2009 that i like/love then i never would've left my house.

But why not bypass a band like Girls and be proactive about looking for better things in the same realm? Don't wait for PFM or Fader to alert you to interesting subsects of genres... that's how GAPDY gets made in the first place.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Did he sing a song about how they couldn't have pizza?

i think i answered this already in my post -- also, i really like girls a lot! i'm not a junkie of the type of music they make, i was fine with enjoying that album and that album only, unless something else came along. certainly everyone has genres/records on their lists that occupy this role for them. (tons of dream voters who didn't listen to all the other great r&b albums that came out this year, for instance)

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:07 (fourteen years ago) link

lol at the rabbithole this thread's gone down

zvincter (The Reverend), Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:09 (fourteen years ago) link

im not generally "looking for music to like" fwiw - i already like lots of music - but lol @ liking girls bein somehow 'lazy'

no well adjusted person cares if a thing the like isnt the actual best version of that thing to like

also no1 i no irl cares abt or likes or has heard of 'girls' the band

Would immensely prefer listening to Glenn Beck moan over classic pop chord changes

here's another possible "lust for life" voter -- find the 9 others and round up the firing squad

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:10 (fourteen years ago) link

But that's the thing. The-Dream's last album opened my ears to a lot of slick r&b that I never would've given a minute to before, and I've been devouring a lot of it since then, seeking out things and figuring out what I like about some artists and don't like about others. xp tp JOrdan

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:11 (fourteen years ago) link

more annoyed by the fact that they're called Girls tbh, ugh.

b( ۠·_۠·)b (Lamp), Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:13 (fourteen years ago) link

i recognized one other ilxor in the P&J voters for this song and peeped his ballot and it's like filled with all this kinda girls/gapdy stuff, i semi-lol'd (muffled half-smirk tbh).

Hi everyone.. I like this countdown so far. Wish I had voted..

Way better than the 2008 list (so far).. probably because singles were generally a lot better this year than last year.

I'm down with Usher, but I've always thought R.Kelly was total joeksville. Either way, at least we agree there's great stuff beneath the surface in all genres. I just get absolutely frustrated when I see people unwilling to look for it and settle for the watered-down versions.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh.. except for ..

ante up = back that azz up

This equation is false.

billstevejim, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:19 (fourteen years ago) link

And I swear to god I'm not standing on some anti-popular music platform. I love tons of chart music, from the '50s to right now, but I've always been a total hound about seeking stuff out (this probably started when I would scour the cut-out cassette bins in the late '80s).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:20 (fourteen years ago) link

that equation fits for me!
also: "white music all sounds the same"
there are days this feels true!

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I just get absolutely frustrated when I see people unwilling to look for it and settle for the watered-down versions.

I don't understand what's wrong with just casually finding some things you like, as you happen to bump into them, in some genres, and maybe digging more deeply into others. Everyone here probably already spends a ridiculous amount of time searching around for music as it is.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 30 January 2010 05:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I know. It's my own problem, really. And now, an hour removed from the center of the debate, I've relaxed my stance on this. Like what you like, people.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 06:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm trying to figure out what is "more deep" in whatever genre girls is, but i suppose it doesn't really matter.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 30 January 2010 06:33 (fourteen years ago) link

The kiddie pool is deeper than Girls

Evan, Saturday, 30 January 2010 06:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I just went back and skimmed the album to refresh my memory, and yeah... pretty much anything from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to Thee Oh Sees to Sic Alps to Spiritualized all do what Girls do better, and before they did it.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 January 2010 06:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I just checked out Girls - Lust for Life for the first time and at least its short. But I can understand the hate.

i dunno, Johnny...personally, I could give J0rdan a hard time for, say, bumping Major Lazer but not seeking out dancehall that doesn't have a Downtown Records promo budget and Hollertronix connections, but he's upfront about the fact that he's being dilettantish about that (which a lot of people are way too defensive to even). and at least for me personally I don't hear anything specific enough in the Girls song to think "go to the source," it's all such common shared history basic rock song template stuff that no fan of it is going to hear some song from 20-40 years ago and think "now I see the light, this is where it all started!"

as genuine a white mainstream talent as you are going to get (some dude), Saturday, 30 January 2010 08:44 (fourteen years ago) link

J0rdan's being a champ about this all, it's true. I'm probably just projecting all over this thread, though, because of my own need to know everything about everything.

That Girls song sounded like an Ariel Pink song to me with all the charm sucked out.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 30 January 2010 09:02 (fourteen years ago) link

not to warp this thread anymore but the major lazer thing was unique i thought because dudes worked with genuine dancehall artists, from what i could tell. it wasn't like how diplo gets some random girls to rap over his version of bmore club or whatever. and also i dig diplo + switch as producers generally, just not as remixers/tastemakers. i dig some post- t-pain dancehall like busy signal or demarco but it's not something i especially care about, so i'll listen to whatever comes down the chute. i listened to the mavado album after whiney gave it an 8 on twitter. thought it was alright-- major lazer is poppier from an american standpoint & plus i was just kinda playing devil's advocate in that 77 thread.

and anyway i think everyone has to be a dilettante about some things -- last year i listened to a lot of critically acclaimed albums that came out in the beginning of the decade when i was 12/13 and never really was aware of. i listened to a lot of swag music, more than 98% of the world i'd imagine. didn't really enrich me as a music listener anyway but it's what i did. only so much time in the world. i watch a lot of tv.

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 January 2010 09:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i imagine that the major lazer thing was like, the first DJ khaled album or something. not exactly the best thing you could get if you wanted southern rap, but it had like 5 bangers and was a decent enough round up of what is happening in that scene at the time for those who are relatively uninitiated. i just thought ppl were being overly harsh & reactionary in that 77 thread (minstrelsy stuff aside)

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 January 2010 09:07 (fourteen years ago) link

another thing about girls/major lazer-- and this might get me in trouble, idk -- only so many albums a year hit me emotionally, where i could be on the proverbial desert island and feel like i need that album in my life. otherwise music very much is a function in my life for me to interact intellectually with people whom i respect & like, which is why i spend way too much time on ilm, and i have nowhere to really express myself when it comes to something like real-ass dancehall or girls-like rock that is better/more unknown than girls. otoh, i had friends irl that dug major lazer & were talking about it, so i checked it out, liked it & defended it on 77. girls had a massive ilm thread. i can pretty much bullshit about anything in the autogoon thread (whatever the dancehall equivalent of oj da juiceman is) & it feels like an important thing in my life. same for funky house & being able to follow the good convo on that thread.

Goon's Anatomy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 30 January 2010 09:16 (fourteen years ago) link

girls are pretty damn bad. just sounds like bad britpop - whoever compared them to dodgy upthread otm - with an adenoidal singer. they don't anger me as much as VW or AC though, prob cuz i've seen less otherwise-sane people go on about them. i really hated britpop at the time though, apart from a couple of trax.

taylor - i love that she changes the R&J ending, it's actually kinda arrogant when you think about it; she believes in happy endings, and she's gonna rewrite shakespeare to get hers. it actually adds to the rush of optimism in the song for me.

"blame it" is the second greatest drinking song of the year after electrik red's "drink in my cup". it captures really precisely that blind drunk feeling of stumbling around a club completely wasted. actually expected it to place higher but then it does seem weirdly polarising - i just find it so irresistibly infectious. a-a-a-a-a-alcohol.

gaga - didn't love either of these when they came out, and indeed was sort of repulsed by "poker face", but it was "poker face" that earwormed me so much over the summer that i just gave in and downloaded the stupid thing, and i've been jamming it ever since. the tipping point was probably dancing to it at a friend's wedding. still hate the whole "bluffing with my muffin" bit though aargh, so cheesy!

the most amazing "paparazzi" performance i've seen is the one at the vmas, with the fake blood and hanging and such. plus the oedipal papa-paparazzi thing is amusing.

it strikes me that all the dubstep-not-dubstep stuff like guido and darkstar seems to be hitting the same spot this year that kompakt techno records did about 7 years ago for music fans who aren't necessarily into the scene: pretty melodies, a real strong emotional sense, interesting beats, as good for headphone/bedroom listening as hearing in a club.
