after seeing her perform for the first time on these videos, the one thing that strikes me is that she must be really short... all her outfits try to draw out the illusion that she has longer legs (which doesn't work if you're accustomed to seeing it).

ok, just googled her height... she claims 5'1" which must mean 5 foot nothing or shorter.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess I don't get why "Poker Face" is supposedly so much worse than "Bad Romance." They're very similar songs, structurally. The only reason I probably like "Bad Romance" better is that it has two hooks: the "rah-rah-ah-ah-ah" bit and the chorus.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm telling you guys, her and snooki (4'10") would be a good duo.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, she's tiny. caught a little of her live once, shrugged and left and have been confused ever since as to how big she got.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh, i would likely be a lot more forgiving if she were part of a four girl group or wasn't so damn ubiquitous

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

the dancing is pretty amateurish, though, don't you think? esp. compared with the performances of other pop stars. I also don't find the (intended) comical aspect of her performances to be very funny.

Dan S, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Read the lyrics to "Poker Face" and compare them to the lyrics to "Bad Romance".

I would much rather listen to a pop song that says "I want your ugly/I want your disease" tan a pop song that says "When I'm bluffin'/With my muffin"

Gaga = the anti-Fever Ray

just about the only two artists to place (along with the dubsteppers and AnCo) who do nothing for me

occurs to me that the cruelest thing u can do to those dupstep picks is shout HERE COME THE DUBSTEPPA (MURRRDERAA) then compare ur energy and enjoyment to theirs

zvookster, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:05 (fourteen years ago) link

During last year's rundown I thought 'Just Dance' was a lock for the top five, before it turned out to be a load of records I'd never heard of, with Gaga nowhere. What's changed this year?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

It took time for people to submit to the Gaga machine.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

"Paparazzi" came out and a whole bunch of people went "wait, I actually kind of dig this"

Gaga didn't explode until January-February of this year, if it had been a month or two earlier she may have been in more people's minds around voting time

so this would be my first time hearing girls finally. Is this indicative of the kind of >coff< work they do?

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:12 (fourteen years ago) link

okay 10 seconds in and this Girls song is a total dick

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, Girls being widely-loved is more WTF to me than even Fleet Foxes or whatever because there's nothing to the songs. At least Fleet Foxes have harmonies that required forethought, and Animal Collective create musical layers. Girls just take garage pop and strip it of all character.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

never heard this before and it sounds really unremarkable if not actually banal. a super 8 videos renaissance would be welcome though.

zvookster, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

wow, 8th rate K records toss-off is now the rage?

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

they must live near me (or the people who do their videos)...

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

like seriously, this song is making me wish I had the ability to cause a nuclear incident

it is so bad that it is making me wish innocent people would die horrible, painful deaths, which is pretty fucking bad if you ask me

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

lmao @ first reactions

zvookster, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i was trying to be fair und balanced but this kinda sucks

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:17 (fourteen years ago) link

This got 12 votes, so I want people to start fessin' up.

and shasta otm

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I voted for this. this song still makes me smile, even after many listens. which is more than I can say for Lady Gaga

I suppose I should feel happy for you that something this wretched and pitiful and totally lacking in any sort of redeeming quality brings you joy but really all I can imagine is the Manson family tearing these douchebags to shreds with their bare hands while thousands of children cheer them on.

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i mean this isn't my thing generally but i really like the thermals first record so i've got no problems with guitars soudning like recorded in a used toilet. this just seems to suck. like, stop singing.

zvookster, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

xp time to refill that prescription

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

and zvookster are you newish here or did you change your name recently?

forksclovetofu, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't compare this to the Thermals. That is not nice to the Thermals.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:22 (fourteen years ago) link

the sound on this record is actually kind of great, actually. It has a miles-deep quality with lots of stuff in the background.

Dan S, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:23 (fourteen years ago) link

hahahah like k records ever put out anything original enough that something could be a "k records toss-off." what makes the song special is mostly his voice, imo

een, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:24 (fourteen years ago) link

when did "special" become a pejorative

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

k records put out lots of special original records

een, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

K was capable of being the best or worst label ever depending on the band (and there were plenty of terrible K releases, most of them Calvin-related).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I would smash the bassist from the Thermals. And they put on a good live show. That is the extent of my thoughts on the Thermals.

that's just it, i HATED all that K Records crap (with a couple exceptions) so that's my sentiment behind my original statement... there was no defense implied, sorry if it came off that way.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

the girls record doesn't offend me or excite me, it just kind of sits there. (his voice doesn't annoy me as much as ezra koenig's, say, but we all have our own meters for when indie intolerableness enters the red zone.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

tza nicholas ii (The Reverend), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

oh sorry misinterpreted that. and yeah i never even made it all the way through the girls album but i like that song and "hellhole ratrace" a lot. *shrug
