Over a month of standby time. Accelerometer, compass, speaker, mic. 30pin connector.

Still can't wait to try out some of the synth/generative music apps on this

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I think this thing will be more fun to play with than to look at or see demo'd. And sure enough, Steve says: "Watching it is nothing like getting it in your hands."

Rather than completely new capabilities, this is going to be a more pleasurable way of doing stuff we already do. Maybe people are going to invent some far-out shit that only multi-touch tablets can do, but it doesn't look like Apple is banking on that.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link

so really is this thing just gonna be an adjunct to my computer?

i love the portability, but it had better be cheap if i need to have a mac already

"30pin connector"

is that the normal iPod/iPhone connector?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link

iPad can run existing App Store apps without modification. Either pixel-for-pixel in middle of screen ,or pixel doubled full screen.

well, it's all about creating an open platform that allows other people to come up with ... oh shit

caek, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

oh great app store

caek, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

"it just works!"

so?

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't see how it's between mac and iphone; it's alongside iphone if anything, u still need a mac

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

can i download an archive from mediafire and expand it?

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

if not, this is stupid. if i can't wrangle files this thing is useless if i have an iphone.

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah they want you to want all 3

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

fricken iphone with a big screen and no phone!

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i doubt it - like i said elsewhere it seems likely that this is where apple is going for consumer/mainstream UI; there'll still be macbooks, etc for "pro" use

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

can I resize the icons? <- u&k imo

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

but it's a good question about whether it can work without a mothership connection

OTM

his power told him (about the fish) (gbx), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link

this is basically my mum's dream computer. the only one she can do anything at all with is an iphone, but it's too small for her w/out specs

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Steve Jobs really doesn't like people using more than one application at a time, does he?

as I said, getting srs DSi XL vibes from this thing

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

like srsly this thing would be dope as an adjunct device IF it ends up being cheap enough

xp that's true: my mom doesn't really need a bigtime comp, she needs something easy to SEE and use that does web and email

his power told him (about the fish) (gbx), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it seems like they're aiming for you to have a phone and what amounts to a fancy netbook or a phone and a fancy netbook and a pro if you're the kind who needs more than a netbook

xp yeah its a snazzy netbook

this sums up my rxn nicely

i assume the selling point will be reading/movies, because this kind of locked down fisher price stuff clearly makes no sense as a pc replacement.

merlin mann: this could srsly cannibalise laptop sales

um, putting aside the syncing issue, 1 app running at a time says no

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:43 (fourteen years ago) link

God dammit it should be its own standalone computer not a big flat iphone that needs to sync up with a desktop or whatever. Basically, if its functionality is only web browsing and iphone apps -- that is very dissapointing.

as a music/video control device: dope
as a way to lounge around my apartment and read shit or watch videos or cue up music on airport express: dope
as a thing that can hook into my wireless network and maybe control stuff in my house or w/e in a futuristic style: dope
as a way to manipulate data in any meaningful way (including, say, writing anything longer than a few paragraphs): ~barf~

i'm fine with it being an adjunct, but if this costs $999 that is just gonna be fucking rude

his power told him (about the fish) (gbx), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:47 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah the price will determine whether this is a useful device. if they are going to take away my freedom to actually manipulate files and data, they should not be charging $999

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:48 (fourteen years ago) link

oooh, i bet games could be good on this....esp RPGs

informal poll: what is yrs price threshold on this?

if this costs like three or four bucks im there

max, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago) link

right now it is $0, but if i had a job or w/e: $599

his power told him (about the fish) (gbx), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago) link

£1000 cos I'm a raving fanboy who wants to make print pages on this thing, £600 if I was actually thinking

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I honestly would say 400-500 US, assuming i had a need for such a thing

EA demoing iPad version of Need for Speed (racing game). like holding an HD display 2 inches from your face.

And I have dreamed of this.

So, over/under on "Hitler is underwhelmed by iPad" YouTube appearing before noon PST?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:51 (fourteen years ago) link

How the hell are you supposed to play games on this thing? Look at the thickness of the border - you're not going to be able to hold it like an iPhone and still reach the controls for, say, Chinatown Wars, are you? Not keen on the tought of cradling it in one arm and typing with the other if I'm standing up, either.
