i heard it can go up stairs by itself

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:31 (5 years ago) Permalink

I heard it doesn't have a name so death can't find it, it doesn't have a home or people to care for. it's not afraid of anything, men least of all. It's fast and strong like a big wind. It can hear for a hundred miles and see a hundred miles underwater. It can hide in the shadow of a noon sun. It could be right behind you and you wouldn't know it 'til you're dead.

From that engadget post:

9:42AM Okay! We're in our seats and there's some Dylan playing on the sound system!

9:11AM Overall the mood is really jovial right now. It's basically a party in the U.S.A.

Well, now I know not to read that coverage.

I hope the home button isn't in the middle of the tablet, as has been shown in all the mock ups; it makes sense on the iphone (where the thumb lands innit) but wouldn't on a tablet (on the same principle)

@testing is probably similar to Rust's inline tests.

I haven't written a line of Swift myself I just appreciate any gesture from the tech industry that suggests that maybe 1977 wasn't the end of history

jennifer islam (silby), Monday, 8 June 2015 19:31 (3 weeks ago) Permalink

Fingers crossed that it’s something crazier (e.g. contracts or QuickTest-like specifications).

If "write a new kernel in swift targeting ARM first" is a thing that's going to be cooking inside that spaceship that's at least pretty neat

For sure. Unfortunately, Objective-C is required to bootstrap Swift and C++ is required to bootstrap LLVM.

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 8 June 2015 19:35 (3 weeks ago) Permalink

Garbage collection is an issue too. However, a Cocoa re-write would be cool too.

I'm a programmer at a microbiology lab at UW, my job is to make sure sequences of the HIV genome don't get lost and keep the science going in general. I used to work for a Seattle-based ecommerce bookseller of note but it sucked and also I wasn't good at it.

calstars, Monday, 8 June 2015 21:02 (3 weeks ago) Permalink

allen, and you? (seeing a mention of QuickCheck in this forum is sort of a... surprise :-P)

anyway, vis a vis "C++ is required to bootstrap LLVM" -- but LLVM is just fine at cross-compiling to whatever, no?
