I recently found a hard drive with loads of old mixes from the 2000s that I thoguht I'd lost.

Here's a great one.

In 2007 I got invited to play at an outdoor Viking-themed rave in Huntingdon. There's a photo of me somewhere standing behind the decks wearing a horned helmet. I used to DJ off a desktop computer, so going to gigs meant carrying the thing along with a heavy CRT monitor.

While it's ostensibly a house and techno mix, I always liked to fling in random genres in, so you've got sixties psychedelia, hip-hop, 2000s US-indie, 90s synth-pop, an experimental piece from the film Belleville Rendezvous, and all sorts of other stuff.

This is a mix I remember fondly, especially the part with OMD's 'Sailing On The Seven Seas', during which I saw an ageing hippie with an incredible Viking beard going absolutely bonkers alongside a bunch of young lads in tracksuits.

That Cormac track is excellent

New mix time! A bit of dubby murk and then it's straight into some hard hypnotic beats until a final stretch of higher tempo euphoric rave tracks. I made a conscious effort to focus on a more homogeneous set of tracks this time, which I was worried would end up sounding too samey, but I'm quite pleased with the results. It ended up letting me loosen up a bit with the mixing, getting more creative with effects and blending things together. Lots of energy overall, perfect for banging your head while you drink your morning coffee.

I feel a bit bad posting twice in a row here, but I'm really trying to zero in on a sound here.

The way that hardcore techno split into various tribes in the early 90s has always bothered me, this is trying to demonstrate that it didn't have to happen.

After two and a half years of my monthly slot at the local pub, they've got a new manager in who has decided to aim squarely at the student market by only hiring garage and dnb DJs.
