How does 'Yesterday Once More' fit in with the roughly contemporaneous Showaddywaddy/Mud axis of retro? I don't see it as particularly political, more a question of dodging dinosaurs by going backwards instead of forwards, as punk claimed to be doing a few years later.

I saw a Carpenters video recently and was struck by how great they all looked early on, a bit like Led Zep or something.

Had a look at the box set a couple of times, but I was put off by all the Christmas songs. The remixes aren't especially "different"; I think Richard C has the same obsession with "perfect, but let's just do one more take" perfection that Brian Wilson had/has - come back and make it just that little bit better. My mum has most of the original albums so I will check over the holidays for any radical differences.

"Your Navy Presents" is, perhaps disappointingly, a US Navy radio show. The "interview" here is, as RC notes, very obviously scripted.

Yes, it is a bit disappointing :-(

Goodbye To Love is glorious.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 09:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes it is. I'm surprised Brian May didn't include it on his Air Guitar compilation.

'Those Good Old Dreams' is a wonderful, up-tempo, optimistic, strong song but when you recall Karen had less than a year to live when she sang it it becomes almost painful. 'Eve' is a little-known masterpiece.

eleven years pass...

the version i have on itunes just has vocals, a snare drum and an electric bass, both played very softly. incredible.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 04:11 (nine years ago) link

i don't know where it's from. it's labeled as the "singles" collection, but on spotify that album has all of the fuller arrangements and they are not as good.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 04:12 (nine years ago) link

anyway, whatever this collection is all of the arrangements are minimal and i've had it as part of my itunes library since high school. the ordinary versions i hear on the radio seem completely wrong.

Treeship, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 04:15 (nine years ago) link

what is this version of this song that i have on my itunes??????? i can't find it anywhere and i think it is one of the best mp3s i've ever heard.

Treeship, Friday, 5 December 2014 23:55 (nine years ago) link

appealing to ilm's collective wisdom. this used to be a music message board after all.

I read your post when you posted it and spent a fair amount of time searching for this but came up with nothing. Carpenters are very well documented online - all versions of the song are documented on that one website I'm sure you've seen. Can you post it or share it somehow? I want to hear it.

Treeship, Saturday, 6 December 2014 03:10 (nine years ago) link

thanks for posting, that's awesome. never heard the stripped down version before.

that's not my post, Saturday, 6 December 2014 03:26 (nine years ago) link

Based on the first 30s, it sounds like the version here: http://dangerousminds.net/comments/karen_carpenters_voice_listen_to_her_isolated_vocal

here's another one that sounds particular striking when pared down.

this one has some layered vocals

Treeship, Saturday, 6 December 2014 06:33 (nine years ago) link

xp also sund4r, you're right those are the same versions. i am still confused about where these came from.

Treeship, Saturday, 6 December 2014 06:36 (nine years ago) link

The link in the DM article directs you to Studio Multitracks, where you can find isolated tracks for many popular recordings. I don't know where those are coming from either, though, yeah.
