Milo the Lucky Strikes logo was designed by an Italian train designer.... the red part of the target was originally olive drab but then WWII intervened and that color was rationed so they switched to red (I was told this by a lovely but dotty old lady so it may not be true)

Milo the Lucky Strikes logo was designed by an Italian train designer....

yep that logo was designed by a guy called raymond loewy (initailly an industrial designer rather than a train designer - he designed coca cola vending machines among other things) but he designed some phenomenal logos, including Shell Oil, Exxon, BP, Us Mail, Lucky strike - an almost endless list.

maybe someone can post these if they are bored cos i dunno how to do it.

Like the FedEx logo, I've always thought that the "G" in the Greenpoint Bank logo is really a circular GREEN ARROW (what it's pointing to, I'm not sure...)

http://www.greenpoint.com/images/logo.gif

Scaredy Cat, Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

the skies!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:27 (twenty years ago) link

I guess it's pointing to the Green, as in "lettuce" or "cabbage" or "money."

scaredy, Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:27 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, it's pointing UP, so that's a good sign. I'll invest all my wads of dough there.

scaredness pussy, Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:28 (twenty years ago) link

but that's a WHITE arrow!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

On the BUILDING it's green, I think. I just remembered it wrong, maybe. But, being WHITE it therefore points to the GREEN. Or does it? Maybe it's just a crooked G.

Anyway, back to the FedEx thing-- I'm surprised how many DESIGNERS that I point that out to that go, "... oooohh YEAH! HOLY SHIT! I NEVER NOTICED THAT!" Really, it's in the dozens because I started pointing it out almost 10 years ago.

Natola (Scaredy Cat), Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:48 (twenty years ago) link

I know that's blurry, but it was a super-small image so I tried to resize it. Hopefully, you can see the clever logo: there's a white hospital cross embedded in the SC.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:23 (twenty years ago) link

(My mom hates the logo because she does marketing for a competing hospital.)

It's certainly true that there's an implied arrow in the FedEx logo between the F and e, too. Since the two arrows are pointing in the same direction and the microcock is between them, maybe it's an indication that they'll dick you over somewhere during the shipment...but just a little bit.
