what means these: "bum bars", or "dui bars"?

i should rectify that (jdchurchill), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

flipping yr bars like that is an urban signifier meaning "destitute" or "I lost my drivers license. again"

in shakedown trim. the rear wheel gap is comical. the bb/massive downtube is seriously stiff, i could not make it rub at all.

bikes that are soft will often have the chain rub/grind on the f. derailler if you sprint hard, esp in the big ring. nowadays with big al and carbon frames, this does not happen too much i guess.

i need a new inner ring, like a 42.

jaxon, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm in Yurp, the price of the bike didn't kill me, but it is expensive if what you want is a pseudo-Dutch city banger -- this is much more than that. US dealers are all Dutch bike specialist types, which fits a lot of the Retrovelo models but not all of them.

The frame bag is silly money, however. Doesn't necessarily mean I won't break down and buy one, though...

how much is the bike

shite new answers (cutty), Thursday, 18 March 2010 13:56 (fourteen years ago) link

~€1500 in Germany

caek, Thursday, 18 March 2010 14:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Clever Cycles in Portland has it for around $2500 -- that's a good price, but I paid less over here.

my felt, looking slightly dorky straight outta evans, fettling it today to get rid of the reflectors etc, adding some black diamond tape for some night-time visibility.

Back slightly earlier than I had hoped because:

a) its freaking cold out and I wasn't even in a long sleeved top
b) have eaten precisely 4 squares of ritter sport since midday

However lovely to ride once I got the seat position right, although I need to check the bolt tension with the torque wrench at work as it definitely slipped a little.

a bike shop in the next suburb is a BMC dealer, has a 2010 team machine on the floor - almost too thin and spindly for my liking tbh, would still accept grudgingly if given one

Bike Snrub ILX (haitch), Thursday, 15 April 2010 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I live in a cramped first-floor flat. One bike is on a rack at the bottom of the stairs by the front door, balanced above a push chair and assorted bits and pieces, the other was on a rack hanging above the really steep stairs leading down from our kitchen to our half-a-garden, dangling above various buckets and things. This set up was started when I bought my winter bike last October: the heavy winter bike was on the sturdy rack by the front door (for easy access for winter rides) and the lightweight racer was on the difficult-to-access back stairs, sitting out the winter.

Earlier this month, with spring finally here and the racing season well under way, I swapped the bikes over. Within a few days the rack on the back stairs revealed it couldn't handle the weight of the winter bike. There was a loud crashing sound and I discovered this:

The wall is too crumbly to support a rack that will take the bike. I tried this as a temporary storage solution:

but unsurprsingly that wasn't very convenient.
