I started this thread because I am about to fly out to Uganda, where hyraxes abound in the wild. I hope to take pictures of them looking cross. NB the guide book I have lists them under 'Oddities'.

I never realised the hyrax had such scary teeth.

Always confusing to me: Hyraxes are also called Coneys sometimes, but so are this animal, the Pika, which is related to rabbits:

The coney thing... I think that comes from the King James Bible, with whoever wrote it not having a clue what the little animals referred to in the OT were.

i dunno why anyone ever got it in their minds to EAT one. though maybe that was the POINT of making hyrax meat treyf.

okay, so i just got the okay from the guys at animal reviews to do a piece or three and just finished a lengthy essay on the household dust mite.
I think maybe a rock hyrax next, after the california condor.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 06:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I would imagine they're quite fatty, given they don't appear to do anything other than sit on rocks barking at people.

"what is the rock hyrax?" was the answer to a video question on Jeopardy! tonight

nobody got it, and a dumb guy who went home with a big fat goose egg guessed it was an otter even though the category was "rock" words/phrases

Saw this on fb today and died. R Hyrax otm I just hope he doesn't need to be anywhere any time soon.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 02:49 (twelve years ago) link

The Hyrax strikes me as being a bit like the Capybara, in that its young are just miniature versions of the adults.

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

isn't that like every mammal ever?

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

Well, not human babies. Or puppies. Or kittens. What I mean is that Capybara babies look just as sensible as their parents, and are similarly proportioned, while hyrax babies look just as fierce.
