pharrel should hire chomsky or robert van winkle, or maybe slip hammer some ketamine or something, to shoot 'clipse' in his arm & i pray natasha cuts uffie's throat 'from ear to ear,' the only time she could genuinely smile being engaged with such a failure of a producer-- i just hope she finds me first!!

luriqua, Thursday, 1 March 2007 09:23 (seventeen years ago) link

two months pass...

Just discovering her album. It's tremendous! I prefer it to the new Amerie and Rihanna.

Long Way 2 Go hooked me in (funny MySpace-themed video!) and it's the delightful pop of Ditto and smouldering of Kiss Me that I'm currently stuck on.

two weeks pass...

Rumor has it she got dropped from Bad Boy.

This makes me a sad panda.

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Siik (the dude who made that jazzy remix of Amerie's "1 Thing" a couple years back also remixed "Me & U" and again, it sounds like a completely different song. It's great.

Wookie Rookie, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah the siik remix is pretty awesome

i guess the album didnt sell v. well? cuz it pretty much ruled from end to end (a lot of this was leslies production, anyone know anything else of note hes done?)

nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

cassie :(

the other two noteworthy ryan leslie productions i've heard - both v much in the same gently minimalist vein - are the new megan rochell single, 'my mistake', and 'like that', off the jojo album. both v well worth hearing.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:21 (sixteen years ago) link

is the whole jojo album worth checking out? i hadnt seen the list of producers till just now, a veritable whos who of hiphop-pop crossover appeal

nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

it is, mostly - it's not exactly consistent but she does a v good beyonce impression on the swizz beats track, the storch one is surprisingly r leslie-esque (thought that was his one for ages), there's a really nice digitised country thing...

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link

oh yeah i didn't realise this before i heard the new album but jojo can really sing

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

BOOOOOO. "Sometimes" is great!

one month passes...

Turns out she wasn't dropped by Bad Boy thankfully. New album Still Cassie due out in October.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:17 (sixteen years ago) link

YEAHH!

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:47 (sixteen years ago) link

The new single is kinda mediocrish.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

YOU'RE WRONG.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, if you say.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 22:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Exactly.

"Me & U" = Sinister and Seductive
"Sometimes" = Unsure and Sweet

They use the same sound effects, and they're both based around the same setup (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge for "Me & U"/guest spot for "Sometimes"-chorus). They're like cousin tracks...Obv. "Me & U" is better, but "Sometimes" goes down just as easily.

"Me & U" >>>>> "Sometimes" >> "Long Way 2 Go"

I want this album. Sure, as a single, "Turn the Lights Off" is a bit of a letdown, but I now prefer "Is It You" to "Sometimes" and maybe even "Me & U." That fuzzy guitar, the perfect structure and hook. Oh, and Cassie sound sweet and soulful...it's perfect.

Tape Store, Sunday, 14 October 2007 03:33 (sixteen years ago) link

This thread is absurd without pictures! "Me & U" is CLASSIC.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 14 October 2007 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

OK OK. I underestimated this "Turn the Lights Off" track, but I'm not going for this "In Love With the DJ" one. BLAAAH.

Cassie,
Based on those first three tracks, this could be my number one album of the year. Don't fuck up! <3

Shit, I never heard Me&U before I clicked on this thread. So daringly empty, Its basically her and that snare for the first minute. I dig minimalism.

I know, right?, Saturday, 20 October 2007 12:28 (sixteen years ago) link

uh, not to keep bumping this, but I just listened to "Sometimes" with the bass up. There's this fucking amazing growling noise going on throughout the entire thing. AWESOME.

Tape Store, Saturday, 27 October 2007 01:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, "Sometimes" is still the best leaked song IMO... followed by "Turn The Lights Off"

The album is due out in February now, btw.

The first single from her new album is called "Official Girl". Produced by Danja, should leak any day now...

btw, where'd you hear that? Google says nothing.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:02 (sixteen years ago) link

oops. wikipedia, i see

Tape Store, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:03 (sixteen years ago) link

actually she said it on 106 & Park today

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link

jeez, you guys sure know how to pick a random-ass singer to obsess over. I just saw Step Up 2 The Streets and she's only in it for like 5 minutes, but I'll leave it up to you to decide whether that's worth camping outside the movie theatre for.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:05 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i respect you two dudes but this cassie obsession boggles me

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:22 (sixteen years ago) link

'me + u' is classic for all time but i don't see much beyond that tbh

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Tape Store has been notoriously SUSPECT
getting all !!!!!!!! about 'produced by danja' is pretty weird

that said, j0rdan ... "Is It You"? She's got some great other tracks, its just

deej, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:28 (sixteen years ago) link

tbh my interest was peaked by produced by danja

i mean he coaxed a good song out of lifeless 07 britney, i don't see why he couldn't do the same for cassie

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:34 (sixteen years ago) link

plus last year alone he had production credits on the only two good songs on the timbaland album, 2 of the 4 great songs on the t.i. album + we takin over so i'll check for his shit for at least the rest of this year

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:36 (sixteen years ago) link

but shes already got good producers??? why have we been led to believe anything great will come from this, danja has some great beats, some wack ones, just like anyone else. i dont get why anyone would be all :D !!! DANJAHANDS!!! and i dont even hate the dude like RTC does

deej, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:43 (sixteen years ago) link

im taking the middle road here! you & alex were hating

deej, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:58 (sixteen years ago) link

This moment when the singer/producer dynamic-duo falters for the first time is usually the beginning of the end of something great though. I mean... great songs have come out of Amerie and Kelis working with producers other than their original partners-in-crime, but there's a whole loss of innoncence / kicked out of Eden vibe to it all isn't there.

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago) link

but there's a whole loss of innoncence

but tapestore still likes it! oh wait that was a typo wasnt it.

anwyay yeah SUSPECT isnt the half. hard to fathom how anyone with an appreciation of cassie's uh fragile fortes wouldnt be imagining this collabo with some tredipation - ok granted there've been moments when danja suggests he could be a sensitive match (the offbeat kath mcphee & nikki flores teenpop stuff in particular) but if he goes and does his usual and britneys it she'll just get swallowed right up, surely. even furtadoing it would probably be too strong (not to mention it being straight uninteresting).

4 the record i think danja is potentially a monster producer but kinda needs to get out from under the timbrella now, especially following his showstopping cameo on 'i get naked'. otherwise yes wearisomely overrated, and never more so than when caught up in some tryhard's "nu-hiphouse omg omg i like dance" baby steps cobblers.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

haha errr i have not a bit of anger in me and that post still managed to come out gunning dudes? these fingers are kinda possessed.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

LOL. I'm not obsessed with Cassie, I just think her first album is excellent (in spite of her weak vocals), so of course I'm looking forward to the follow-up.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm a bit obsessed, yeah. Like Brainwasher, I'm a huge fan of her debut (and again, moreso because of Ryan Leslie, but Cassie still contributed a lot to the record...shame Just Friends didn't make the cut). It's a really consistent album.

What excites me now, though, is how much growth both Cassie and Leslie have shown since the debut. All the leaks are of a much higher quality than the ones that appear on her album...better production, better, more confident and more emotional singing and better songs (as said upthread, I prob. prefer "Is It You" to "Me & U")

They're a great duo, the closest, i think, we've come to an Aaliyah/Timbo situation. So yeah, I'm extremely excited about the album. And Danja? Well, he played a huge role in two of my favorite records of the '00s (my #1, FutureSex/LoveSounds, and Blackout)

btw, Cassie sounds a hell of a lot more exciting than other R&B favorites like, say, Amerie, who haven't really grown much from record to record.

"timbrella"!

Tim F, Thursday, 14 February 2008 02:33 (sixteen years ago) link

THX everyone for not pointing out the complete fuckup in my post (that Just friends song = dif. cassie...one who has a bigger voice but a more soulless one). or maybe thx for not reading.
