I commend any and all instances of funky proselytisation.

I just came across this page (real good read)

Saw the posts and comments from tim thanks alot for the kind words dude!

I thought the Godsgift comparison was really interesting because it must be a real subconcious thing.....as when i was younger his cd he spat on for DEUCE magazine (solid city) mix cd was a big inspiration for me! Gift is a bad man simple!

Out to titchy i take note of what you were saying (some rhymes were literally hot off the tounge when i layed them) so big up for the constructive criticism!

If you guys fancy a different listen, check out ma mixtape www.majesticonline.co.uk

Thanks guys :)

Good comp rev.

Should we caucus with respect to funky votes on the ILM 2009 poll? There's enough nominations that I can imagine some real vote splitting going on.

I suspect there'll be some consensus around "In The Morning" and "Pull It"...? I can't not vote for "Inflation" as my number 1 pick but otherwise I'm open to suggestions w/r/t what we should rally around.

Tim F, Saturday, 16 January 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i've voted already! did trax unranked, voted for "inflation", "pull it", "your eye too fast", "we nuh run" and "between us" - it hurt so much leaving "in the morning", "don't let go", "i pray", "love dub", "hey hey" and "bad gyal" out

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 16 January 2010 00:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay well I can definitely get behind "Between Us", and love the others too obv.

Tim F, Saturday, 16 January 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Fitting that I referenced Martyn in my strawman upthread - his new Fabric 30 mix is excellent um funkstep-not-funkstep, esp. the section that goes "Rass Out" --> Zomby --> Uncle Bakongo (Roska side-project) --> Zomby.

Tim F, Saturday, 16 January 2010 04:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Pretty sure that Inflation, Bad Gyal, Pull It, In The Morning, Your Eye Too Fast and perhaps Heads, Shoulders... will all make my ballot.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 16 January 2010 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

"In the Morning" top 5 for me, and "Time to Get Nasty" and "Inflation" probably on there somewhere.

Yes, love it! Is it a nominee?

Deej do you like "We Rollin"? I think of it as a straight cross of "I Got My Beads On" with "Stick Up".

I notice that Tom Lea mentioned upthread that "Stick Up" was produced by Ill Blu, which I didn't know but makes sense actually. Tom also suggested it was crap - WRONG.

Short Scratcha DVA mix and interview up at Urb.Com. The introduction is more of the post-XLR8R party line (thank god for funkstep's "intrigue, depth, and necessary weight"), but the interview is nice (dude loves The Foreign Exchange apparently) and I'm looking forward to hearing the mix.

Ha, I've totally thought to myself that there needs to be a house remix of "Daykeeper". That syncopated keyboard motif is totally a gimme.

stupid fruity crazy swag crew jumpin in yo thread (The Reverend), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago) link

it all came from Cooly G, actually. I was at her house playing her a couple things and she heard somthing she liked. She was like “Lemme play dis?” I said no cause it wasn’t finished. It was just the beats to a song I was working on. She was like “Gimme dat! I’m playin it! And you should call it “Natty.’” So, she actually named it as well.

heh cooly g is such a diva

marcus was pretty great tonight. and he has a new tune which samples him saying 'shitta'! obviously, this is fantastic. (though like a lot of samples like this in funky/dubstep/garage, it sounds a bit 'canned', i prefer vocal samples when theyre steals from other tracks, rather than specially recorded, ditto for cooly gs tracks). even though rankin doesnt have many verses, i love hearing them over and over. if he doesnt do them i feel i havent got my moneys worth lol.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

rankin was cracking me up with his various exclamations on tunes last week:

- "excrement."
- "dat is vomit." (think this was for mad one's 'house girls 2' refix - rankin otm)
- "you... lidl carrier bag."

love his "im on a mdma, mdma, all i wanna do is ?? juice and lay" riff too.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 21:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Vomit good or vomit bad? I haven't heard that refix yet. LOVING "Keep on Dancing" and "Tribal Day Dream" though - these guys maybe no. 2 funky producers of 2010 UK Funky behind Ill Blu for me.

We should do a poll on this maybe - guaranteed four votes for sure!

Ill Blu
Devine Collective/Mad One
Donae'o
Fuzzy Logik
Funkystepz
Screama
Crazy Cousinz

Re Rankin - I think he's a fairly halfhearted MC, the pace of new bar generation is glacial and he has little intuitive understanding of what bars go well with what tunes, like on that Majestic set Majestic seems to know each tune inside out before it comes on and starts his rhymes at just the right point (like if there's a point where the tune switches up he will begin a new rhyme at that very moment), whereas you can hear Rankin wait for a full measure to pass while he gets the tune's, er, measure. Also he just sort of wanders off mid-rap!

BUT I think this all this is vaguely intentional as he's more interested in being host, and what he's GREAT at is music crit, I love how he's always passing judgment on tunes and identifying the particular sounds he likes, and he's usually both spot on and interesting.

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

That Manara mix is astonishingly good by the way so it would be churlish to point out it doesn't really belong here given how low it is on syncopation, soca influence etc. Feels more like a way back to credibility for really maximalist bigroom techno but with an excuse to switch up the drums every three minutes.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:06 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it didn't feel funky per se but i didn't know where else to put it, and it had roska/ikonika/that aaron carl track i've heard in funky sets on it, and it's SO amazing

STICKY

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Perhaps ironically but rather typically, the Aaron Carl remix is by far the biggest "uk funky" anthem on that mix...

YEAH I TOTALLY FORGOT STICKY ON MY LIST. But I'd put him at number 3 or 4 (prob. equal with Donae'o).

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i'd put him at no 1 for 2009 - "bad gyal" + fugitive riddim + jumeirah riddim = running things

Basically all of these producers are coming correct with about 4-5 really great productions over the past twelve months or so:

Ill Blu:
- Time To Get Nasty
- Pull It
- Bring It Back
- Blu Magic
- Heartbreaker, and several more which is why they're no. 1

Sticky:
- Fugitive Riddim
- Jumeirah Riddim
- whatever the riddim for "Jack It Up" is
- Bad Gyal

Devine Collective/Mad One:
- House Girls Part One
- Tribal Conga
- Gotta Have It (I think it's called? I discuss it upthread somewhere)
- Keep On Dancing
- Tribal Daydream

Fuzzy Logik:
- In The Morning
- Lush
- The Way You Move

Funkystepz:
- Funky Sound/Who's Skanking The Hardest
- Trinity Hill
- Bounce
- a couple of tunes I don't know the names of, as Rankin says "these guys are due for a meaty album"
- NB. They make dud tunes occasionally though.

Crazy Cousinz:
- Inflation
- Always Be Mine
- Various amazing remixes incl. "Daydreaming", "Day'n'Nite", "Embrace Me" etc.

Donae'o:
- Flap Your Wings
- Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes Remix
- his album
- NB. "Party Hard" doesn't count.

Screama
- "Kiss"
- That amazing vocal tune with the squiggly electro-gargoyle sounds
- Several other tunes whose names I don't know
- I guess "Funky Gangsta" or whatever it's called

Also how long has this track been knocking around? I've been hearing it on various mixes and only just cottoned onto how great it is.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

??

As in, ironic-but-typical that the biggest "UK Funky" anthem in that tracklist is not the Roska track but a Nick Holder dub of an Aaron Carl track. i.e. totally not from "the scene" no matter how expansive yr definition. See also: Vato Gonzales.

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

typical of what, though?

it's as "from the scene" as the karizma/hard house banton/quentin harris tunes that get dropped at every funky night ever...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

its shocking how geeneus always gets ignored in these best producer lists. he might have put out less than everyone else but get down low is just>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

tim i think youre being harsh on rankin. he might wait to jump in/on to a track but it just makes his entrance that much more poised. plus i like that slightly blase air he gives off at times. i never thought of it as half hearted though. majestic i do like but i like rankins slightly more restrained 'cool' than majestics raucousness (and i like majestic too).

jme is actually really really good on funky, as far as grime mcs on this thing.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

vomit good! and excrement good. everything good. (obviously there comes a brick wall after a while in terms of variations of dirty, disgusting, filthy, smutty, etc modifiers so all kudos to rankin for vaulting to the next level imo.)

and YES 'tribal daydream' is incredible. uk types attempting any kind of righteous pulpit house spoken word still feels very daring and counter to existing prisms of sensibility and such - it's so thrilling and dramatic when it comes off like it does there. cf your major notes 'holy ghost' number also i suppose.

xxp oh god guys why are you all listing old stuff again.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

it's as "from the scene" as the karizma/hard house banton/quentin harris tunes that get dropped at every funky night ever...

That's my point! I didn't mean "typical" in a bad way at all. I just meant, isn't it funny how counter-intuitive this process is.

I deliberately didn't include Geeneus because his only funky productions in the past twelve months that I'm aware of are "Crackish"/"Get Low" and the remixes of "Good Life" and "Show Me Love" (neither of which are exactly classic). One great tune in a year does not equal producer of the year.

Re Rankin - I really like him! My point is that he doesn't excel on traditional MC criteria but makes up for it in other ways. Plus his actual bars are fantastic most of the time even if they are almost all overly familiar at this point (then again most MCs' bars would be if i listened to new sets every couple of weeks)

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Re "Oassis" / "Bad Man Riddim" etc - distinction between "from the scene" and "of the scene" - both tunes totally fit the latter category.

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:40 (fourteen years ago) link

vomit good! and excrement good. everything good. (obviously there comes a brick wall after a while in terms of variations of dirty, disgusting, filthy, smutty, etc modifiers so all kudos to rankin for vaulting to the next level imo.)

Yeah I thought that's what Rankin' meant but wasn't sure that you weren't deliberately reading him literally as a joke.

and YES 'tribal daydream' is incredible. uk types attempting any kind of righteous pulpit house spoken word still feels very daring and counter to existing prisms of sensibility and such - it's so thrilling and dramatic when it comes off like it does there.

Yes, and the relationship between the vocal and the stern ominousness of the arrangement (those strings!) is really crucial - it feels like such an announcement.

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:43 (fourteen years ago) link

wow, not sure i've even heard anything from devine collective/mad one.

For Fuzzy Logik, I'd also add Pachi with the really sticky/funky synths.

Geeneus also remixed DJ Play, which is quite good.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Thursday, 21 January 2010 00:03 (fourteen years ago) link

You've probably heard "House Girls" - it sounds a bit like a sparer version of "Inflation", the xylophone/strings replaced by a timestretched vocal "GIRRRRRLLLLSSS" and little synth patterns and booming post-"Sirens" bass.
