and Lindstrøm & Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool is 2010, true or false? All signs I am seeing point to 2010 release, not 2009...

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Correct. It was apparently available to a select few through Rough Trade in the last week or two of 2009, but it's official release wasn't until 2010.

Alex in Montreal, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:49 (fourteen years ago) link

ya that really shouldn't be on there, i don't think.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link

haaa i think you did the right thing musically re "my girls" but it would have been v funny if you held out

k3vin k., Wednesday, 13 January 2010 05:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I was enjoying that even more the lack of Blueprint 3.

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 05:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey, so noting that I've missed a lot of stuff—Last year, my top three were The OhSees, Black Mountain and Indian Jewelry. Since I love the new OhSees album, what else might I have missed that I'd really love off this list?

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 06:26 (fourteen years ago) link

That Toro Y Moi album is 2010, btw. It leaked in December or something, but it's not official until Feb or so of this year.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 06:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Cass McCombs - Dropping the Writ (this is from 2007).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 06:47 (fourteen years ago) link

thx, musically!

ILX, i expect Electrik Red and The-Dream in the top 5, don't let me down

autotuna fish (Tape Store), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 07:34 (fourteen years ago) link

lol I forgot my legit fav song of the year, Pleasure P - Boyfriend #2 (Flo Rida Remix). I'll give it a spiritual first place vote.

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 08:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Who are the Acidic Jews? Can someone shed some light?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Bit of a shock to discover that nobody nominated Bonkers, Remedy or Bulletproof, but I'll live!

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:32 (fourteen years ago) link

man, putting together my albums ballot is so easy and narrowing down my tracks ballot is so hard

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't started on tracks yet, but after thinking this wasn't a great year for my music listening, my longlist for albums is surprisingly long. Got it down to about 50 now, although some of these are still 'must check this out before submitting ballot' albums.

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I asked this on the last thread, but I don't think it was answered. Are Desire - Desire and Desire - II the same album?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:02 (fourteen years ago) link

You know, I was pretty sure The Blueprint 3 had been nominated too.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:04 (fourteen years ago) link

also, Fuck Buttons trax folk, what ya'll thinkin'? Lisbon Maru is probs my fav, but Surf Solar being the single and all...

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Agreed, I'd figure "Surf Solar" may get a much lower placing due to vote splitting (it has my vote, though -- can't do much more than that).

according to the other thread, this is where we should be posting youtubes for trax we want to rep for. ok then! first, the fierce female MCs of uk funky house:

agreed!

are we posting youtube on this thread or do we want to start a separate one?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 13:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Amadou & Miriam's Welcome to Mali was 2008 in the UK, by the way. Was it 2009 for the US?

Just trying to thin out my shortlist.

Amadou & Miriam's Welcome to Mali was 2008 in the UK, by the way. Was it 2009 for the US?

Use this thread for YouTubes and pimping, definitely

No Sa - Nuclear Evolution: The Age Of Love - on the albums list. That`s a shocker. It`s my number 2 but it could be my number 1 now it`s been omitted...

musically, thanks for all the work you've put in. sincerely.

Omission from the trax list: Major Lazer - Pon De Floor

not seeing that on the nominations page...

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

YouTube pimping is all well and good but I'm not voting for anything I didn't already listen to and love in 2009. There's enough of that without adding other things to the field.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i pimped this on the other pimping thread but i'll pimp it here too just cuz i think it's a sort of lovely song (about dying/watching somebody die).

scott miller & the commonwealth (w/patty griffin) "i'm right here my love"

Objection. I bought it in a shop (not Rough Trade!) in November and I want to vote for it in this poll.

we seem to know for sure that there's both a 2009 and a 2010 release date, someone just has to make a judgment call. fwiw looks like 3 different versions were released in 2009... http://www.discogs.com/Lindstr%C3%B8m-Christabelle-Real-Life-Is-No-Cool/master/205425

psychgawsple, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd say it should probably go in a 2010 poll, because I love it and want it to place highly. It won't in a 2009 poll, purely by virtue of unfamiliarity to a lot of people.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

most of what i'll vote for should fare pretty well with the greater ilm population, but i've gotta pimp the bitters because there has been but a little love, mostly from dudes on rolling punk. anyways, this was by far the best lo-fi garage pop i heard this year, about six billion times better than wavves or ganglians, and far closer to my heart than smith westerns ever got.

Things I wish I'd had the presence of mind to nominate: The King Khan & BBQ Show - Invisible Girl (the album), Theophilus London - "Cold Pillow" (even though I'd probably be the only vote) and Japandroids - "Wet Hair"

Things I nominated and didn't vote for: NOMO - Invisible Cities and Finale - A Pipe Dream and a Promise (which are both great, btw)

Things I nominated that don't have much of a shot, I'm afraid: Das Racist, Theophilus London, and Franz Nicolay

Songs I nominated I'd love to see gain some traction: Guido - "Way You Make Me Feel" (stands a chance cuz of another ILM thread!), Burial & Four Tet - "Moth" and Teengirl Fantasy - "Portofino"

Parenthetical Grillz, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:25 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost: i thought i nominated Guido. Either way, its gonna be there in my 20 chosen trax. Love it lots.

Also, once we've submitted, is it generally the done thing to post your votes here?

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:30 (fourteen years ago) link

xp- the lindstrom & christabelle would still place, i'm sure! maybe not top 5 like it deserves, but it'd place.

regardless, time to start pimping, even though i'm sure some of these don't really need my help...

dj kaos - love the night away (tiedye mix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15FPSDreTcs

Grackle - Desert Acid (Sombrero Galaxy Version)- (riyl vangelis, mike oldfield, kitaro, maybe even studio or 'where you go i go too')

jonathan jeremiah - happiness (quiet village remix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9Cw5Swlybk

Son of Sound - Life Under Bridges

SMD - Cruel Intentions (Maurice Fulton remix)- (there's some weird warping part of the way through this youtube but you'll still get the idea)

i liked that NOMO a lot

yo parenthetical grillz vote for 'invisible girl' the song instead! it may be only the second best track on the album after "third avenue" but it's a better sell for most people i'd imagine.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, let's wait until 2010. I'm sure a lot of American listeners (myself included) have heard the odd YouTube track or otherwise leaked/online version, but haven't had access to a CD-quality version along with time to let it sink in.

Olenka and the Autumn Lovers:

Folk band from London, Canada - lead singer grew up under communism in Poland, songs veer from country-inflected on the Papillonette EP to Eastern European folky on the LP (Sample song title: "A Story of the Forging of Little Olek's Social Realist Spirit"). A few samples, although the EP is available on iTunes. The LP isn't, unfortunately, but it's around on CD Baby and zunior and some other places...Unassuming at first but slowly became one of my most listened to groups of '09, esp. the Papillonette EP. Doubt anyone but me will throw them votes given that they're barely known in Canada, let alone outside it, but if they gain a few ears I wouldn't mind at all.

For those of you that can get down with rap in other languages - and real life Francophones - Adek Dark's 7-song EP Une friandise pour vos oreilles is the truth. You can download the whole thing gratis on his myspace.

I'm a little sad that votes will be split between Azari & III's 2 nominations. Which do people generally prefer? I think Reckless With Your Love >>> Hungry for the Power, though I might end up voting for both.

lou, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Mmm. I thought Hungry for the Power was the consensus track but I am down for strategizing the other way.

A friend of mine from first yr of uni is DJ-ing an opening set for them this Friday in Montreal - I'd be crazy not to go, right?
