not sure if you were serious or not, but here's a couple things:

estelawolf (The Reverend), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Your post won't load for me while i'm at work Rev, I'm almost afraid.

Seriously I'm gonna start uploading ordinary funky sets as rickrolls under cover stories like "this dude is from AMSTERDAM, yes it's true he makes funky but he namechecks DERRICK MAY, hangs with MARTYN and likes to parade his BOLANO books in interviews while playing THIS HEAT in the background!"

Instant front page of some zine or other.

Tim F, Friday, 8 January 2010 04:45 (fourteen years ago) link

It's "Wad" and "Love Dub (Refix)"

estelawolf (The Reverend), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:46 (fourteen years ago) link

i.e. calm down

estelawolf (The Reverend), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:47 (fourteen years ago) link

hey bolano is awesome

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I know I'm reading Savage Detectives right now - Derrick May and (sometimes) Martyn and This Heat are awesome too!

Tim F, Friday, 8 January 2010 05:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I wish Scratcha DVA's "Hard House" was on youtube or like, if Scratcha's stuff is by definition funkstep then that is far and away the best example (or tied with "Wad" maybe). Ridiculously... funky!

Tim F, Friday, 8 January 2010 06:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I'll give the Marcus Nasty and the Dubplate Wonder a listen.

I'm a little less cranky tonight, its got a better chance of getting through.

babylon sister (Siah Alan), Friday, 8 January 2010 06:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Majestic really reminds me of Gods Gift. Kind of wish it was him actually.

babylon sister (Siah Alan), Friday, 8 January 2010 06:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Come to think of it, Gods Gift used to do safe sex bars back in the day. Can anyone tell me if I'm crazy or not, Majestic = Gods Gift? This whole set reminds me more of that rolling not quite garage, not quite breaks, not quite grime thing that Slimzee used to do back in 2001 or so.

babylon sister (Siah Alan), Friday, 8 January 2010 07:05 (fourteen years ago) link

That's a good point of comparison for it actually.

Majestic ain't God's Gift - you can hear a lot more of the Carribean in God's Gift's rapping.

The safe sex rhymes are great.

"Silly billy got a case of chlamidy!"

Tim F, Friday, 8 January 2010 08:32 (fourteen years ago) link

"Are you gonna bang? 'Course I am!"

Tim F, Friday, 8 January 2010 08:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Sorry, it was definitely giving me a little deja vu, same sort of vibe without God's aggro yardie thing. Nice to think that he might have influenced some people at least, he's one of the most underrated MCs of his time. Kind of brings me back to downloading shitty 128 kbps rips of grime sets off of DC++ forums back in 2003 and 2004. Man, I loved Slimzee's sets.

babylon sister (Siah Alan), Friday, 8 January 2010 08:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I love God's Gift, you're def. right about the resemblance.

Tim F, Friday, 8 January 2010 08:57 (fourteen years ago) link

btw No More (Ill Blu Remix) by Suncycle ft. Mavado is a free download on 7digital

Tim F, Saturday, 9 January 2010 13:44 (fourteen years ago) link

The Bassboy/Marcus Nasty tunes are uniformly excellent!

Tim F, Saturday, 9 January 2010 13:51 (fourteen years ago) link

the fuzzy logik remix of "lush" is so good.

that set was pretty good though i could've done with a lot less majestic tbh.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 9 January 2010 14:11 (fourteen years ago) link

i do like majestic but there are times when he tries to do over tongue twisty type rhymes and it just sounds a bit ropey.

i would love to hear gods gift on some funky, if only for one set.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 9 January 2010 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

god knows it would be better than that awful attempt at a commercial hit he made a few months back.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 9 January 2010 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I think Majestic is great, the perfect tone for a funky MC in my opinion.

Tim F, Saturday, 9 January 2010 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Tim is there a tracklisting for the Dubplate Wonder set? I like it, btw, but the sound quality is awful which kinda hampers it for me... it possibly feels a bit early in the day for there to be a 2ManyDJs of UK funky although I'm enjoying the recontextualisation of The Whistler as the ur-funky track.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 January 2010 15:13 (fourteen years ago) link

There was at least one track on there that was stupidly awesome and I had never heard before.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 January 2010 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Not that I'm aware of Matt. The only tracks I can really ID are his remixes of other people's tracks.

Tim F, Saturday, 9 January 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago) link

btw No More (Ill Blu Remix) by Suncycle ft. Mavado is a free download on 7digital

This is very good but spectacularly emo.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 January 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

mavados always emo

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 9 January 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

sounds like hes just moaning/self pitying on so many tracks lol

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 9 January 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

He totally changes the complexion of those xylophones and piano chords that would be pretty uplifting in another context.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 January 2010 16:40 (fourteen years ago) link

9. TOUCH ME – J LABELS FT NAUGHTY NATZ

This is an amazing, hypnotic, evocative slow-burner of a vocal track, I reckon. A worthy successor to Seb Chu ft. Xara's "You Got Me".

"Watch me get dirty / as I go down low!"

Tim F, Sunday, 10 January 2010 12:00 (fourteen years ago) link

He totally changes the complexion of those xylophones and piano chords that would be pretty uplifting in another context.

Love how much Ill Blu have tarted up "Dragon Pop" for the arrangement on this (explanation: if you removed Mavado, the xylophone, the synths and the piano and left just the bass and drums you'd have their prior track "Dragon Pop") - totally changes the vibe of the music from vaguely grim to celebratory, while not sounding like add-ons at all.

Tim F, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i like the backing on that movado remix but hes really whiny. it does have a celebratory vibe, but it also has a euro-trancey vibe, which i find a bit much, though i strangely also like the combination of his emo euro trancehall with ill blu's grimey funky.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 11 January 2010 10:55 (fourteen years ago) link

but it also has a euro-trancey vibe, which i find a bit much

You may enjoy the funkstep astringency of "Dragon Pop" then.

Tim F, Monday, 11 January 2010 10:57 (fourteen years ago) link

well the euro trancey thing comes more from movado really.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 11 January 2010 11:12 (fourteen years ago) link

admittedly true.

Tim F, Monday, 11 January 2010 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Wish "trancehall" was a real genre.

Tim F, Monday, 11 January 2010 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

where is this marcus and majestic set from? it doesnt sound like the normal rinse radio rip. majestic sounds higher up in the mix too.

i DLd that heatwave dancehall 2009 round up on rinse but still not heard it. but im sure theres quite a bit of trancehall about in dancehall these days (dont pay enough attention to really say).

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 11 January 2010 11:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Not really. Only in the way that you might call "Love In The Club" trance&b - i.e. not that much.

Tim F, Monday, 11 January 2010 11:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Hotsteppa looks like a dufus but I love this track so much - derelict the anti-skank nazis.

Admittedly some of those dudes may wish to invest in better tag-raps.

Tim F, Monday, 11 January 2010 12:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Also I don't think we've ever discussed THIS BANGER in this thread:

"not that much"

but enough. more than enough in fact.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 11 January 2010 13:23 (fourteen years ago) link

my new roomie wants me to burn a cd of funky for him!

The Reverend, Friday, 15 January 2010 06:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I commend any and all instances of funky proselytisation.

Tim F, Friday, 15 January 2010 07:12 (fourteen years ago) link

I just came across this page (real good read)

Saw the posts and comments from tim thanks alot for the kind words dude!

I thought the Godsgift comparison was really interesting because it must be a real subconcious thing.....as when i was younger his cd he spat on for DEUCE magazine (solid city) mix cd was a big inspiration for me! Gift is a bad man simple!

Out to titchy i take note of what you were saying (some rhymes were literally hot off the tounge when i layed them) so big up for the constructive criticism!

If you guys fancy a different listen, check out ma mixtape www.majesticonline.co.uk

Thanks guys :)

Majestic, Friday, 15 January 2010 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I love it when things like this happen.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 15 January 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

<3

The cd I gave my roomie came out something like:

Bongo Jam
African Warrior
MA1 - Waterfalls <-- real slept on imo
Emotions
Do You Mind
In the Morning
Pull It
Gabryelle Refix
As I
Self Religion
Your Eye Too Fast
Head Shoulders Knees Etc.
Inflation

The Reverend, Friday, 15 January 2010 21:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Good comp rev.

Should we caucus with respect to funky votes on the ILM 2009 poll? There's enough nominations that I can imagine some real vote splitting going on.

I suspect there'll be some consensus around "In The Morning" and "Pull It"...? I can't not vote for "Inflation" as my number 1 pick but otherwise I'm open to suggestions w/r/t what we should rally around.

Tim F, Saturday, 16 January 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i've voted already! did trax unranked, voted for "inflation", "pull it", "your eye too fast", "we nuh run" and "between us" - it hurt so much leaving "in the morning", "don't let go", "i pray", "love dub", "hey hey" and "bad gyal" out
