I'm sorry about your aunt, Rock.

And not worry about neighbor's kid. Have you met her parents?

Oh yes. They are my next door neighbours. We know each other reasonably well. I mind their cat when they go on holidays.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks, guys. I felt bad for her because she took care of her mother (who had Alzheimers) for years and years, and only had a brief window of decent health and the freedom to enjoy it before her own body started breaking down. Now my uncle, who's been taking care of my aunt, is into his 90s. I swear, eskimo ice floes or Soylent Green-style go-to-sleep centers are the way to go.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 18:59 (sixteen years ago) link

My condolences as well, Rock.

luna, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, Onimo, what did I tell you?

Michael White, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Condolences, Rock Hardy. I'm sure her window of fun-opportunity was GREAT, after all that care-giving!

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Luna, you should have rear-ended that Minibitch. God.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Someone once told me that the reason why nobody in LA can drive is because they're all New Yorkers who came out to the west coast and have never really driven since getting their licenses.

My boss, when I worked there many moon ago, would regularly call me from her car phone and then say "Oh, I need to go," accompanied by the sound of car horns in the background. She is a terrible driver. Stay away from her.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I wanted to Beth, believe me. When she shot me the bird, I was seriously considering (for a nanosecond) putting my car in park and getting out to talk to her. Better judgment and being late for work made me decide against it.

Trish, your old boss sounds like my current boss. She's the only person I know to ever have had her car door ripped off by a passing bus. ("But I didn't see it... I just opened my door and then it was gone!")

luna, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 23:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, many people in LA can't drive because they're FOB and don't bother with such silly things as the DMV. "I know how to drive, I'm just gonna do it!" Sadly, for most of them, "I know how to drive" is really not at all based in reality. Kind of like how picking up a tennis ball doesn't mean you won Wimbledon.

luna, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 23:56 (sixteen years ago) link

FOB?

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 06:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh no, disaster! These cans of beerzlol that my mother gave me go out of date in a week! Arrgh! I'll just have to drink them.

YAY! Or get a buzz off of stale beer like in Bloom County.

when I worked there many moon ago

In LA?? I didn't know that. Woman of mystery is accentmonkey!

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 08:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I am not onimoed, considering last night, but I believe he kind of is.

aldo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, didn't your team win something in something or other that I believe we lost in?

I don't pay much attention to the world.

Kev-lol, yes, back in my younger days when I wanted to be a television writer, I moved to LA for a year and worked as an assistant to the world's best boss. Best because she gave me a fund of insane stories to take back to the real world, and has made me appreciate the sanity of every job I've had since then.

I only lasted a year in LA, though, because I got lonely for home (nobody had email or Fasebuk or the money to come and visit me then) and shit went very wrong for littlest brother, so I had to come home. Sigh.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Onimo, you know I'm usually a francophile, but you beat them last time, albeit at home, and they don't have Henry, so take heart. Man, I don't like Domenech.

Hi dere Michael. I took heart! And beer! So dying but I don't care. What a night.

Antonin Artaud, Victor Hugo, Marquis de Sade, Marquis de Sade, Maurice Ravel, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, erm, Jean-Luc Picard out of Star Trek! your boys took a hell of a beating!

(famous French people have great names!)

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Marquis de Sade! So good they named him twice!

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Should've put Marcel Marceau in.

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:18 (sixteen years ago) link

onimoed all to hell tbh. Dunno how I made it to work. Had to get up early for Mark to open his pressies.
"Dad this is great!"
"urgh"
"Dad look!"
"urgh"
"Dad! Dad! Dad!"
" "

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:20 (sixteen years ago) link

"Mark, let me tell you a little something about growing old..."

Happy birthday to him, btw.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Or "hey! You know what's fun on birthdays? Bringing dad a cool, wet facecloth to put over his forehead, and then bringing him a new one every half an hour! Oh boy!"

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Now my wee brother's texting me asking how to build a computer. Fuck off you tit! You were in the pub! You saw me getting POURED into a taxi!

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Happy birthday l'il Onimo! Accentmonkey, that sounds like an adventure!

I am not onimoed (though I kind of should be...) Knocked Up v. disappointing.

You know how to build computers onimo? Iiiiinteresting. I might be trying to rack your brains at some point.

Hangovers suck though. Do you have to work today?

I am relieved Ireland aren't through. Less manic patriotism to wade through in my morning papers!

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, but now the endless attempts to blame someone, when the fact is that no other nation on earth with a population of four and half million people gets this bent out of shape when it doesn't make it to the important stages of a soccer competition.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think there are many other entire nations with as strong a sense of entitlement as you get here.

Looks like I might be putting first bid in today. Beside myself with fear.

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:38 (sixteen years ago) link

You know how to build computers onimo?

Not in this state I don't!

I am at work but skiving my hungover ass off. Leaving at lunchtime to go and collect Mark from school so only a couple of hours to endure.

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:39 (sixteen years ago) link

If Ireland getting all bent out of shape leads to more rants from this guy Ronan posted about on the England thread then I'm all for it :)

Come anticipate English football's exciting new era under Steve McClaren with me

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:40 (sixteen years ago) link

This is giving me fits of giggles: "Would you let him drive the train to Cork? WOULD YOU? WOULD YOU LET HIM DRIVE THE TRAIN TO CORK TOMORROW MORNING?"

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think there are many other entire nations with as strong a sense of entitlement as you get here.

It's living next to Britain. It has us spoiled in some ways. That's my theory, anyway.

Looks like I might be putting first bid in today. Beside myself with fear.

Very exciting! Just remember, you can walk away right up to the last minute. It's not Scotland!

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Putting on Scotland last night for the last 15 minutes gave me and my friend a brief reminder of what Ireland games were like when we were good. Battling etc. I am going to live vicariously through my brother in law and nephew for the rest of this campaign.

x-post yep at full-time I said to my friend "well at least the holy trinity of giles/dunphy/brady won't hold back"

another great one was during the World cup last year. Dunphy was slating Rio Ferdinand after Cannavaro put in a fine performance against Germany. And he was probably a bit drunk or overexcited, he just yelled "if Rio Ferdinand is worth 100 grand a week, Cannavaro is worth a HUNDRED MILLION GRAND.........A DAY"

Ronan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I am curious as to who the FAI should have hired instead of Staunton? I mean, obviously someone, but are there people lining up to take the job?

Irish sport kind of annoys me. It all seems to operate on that same nod-and-a-wink basis as local politics, and I am just allergic to that aspect of Irish life.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:47 (sixteen years ago) link

John Aldridge.

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Eamon Dunphy.

I forgot he also referenced his own failed chat show last night. He said something like "life is cruel...I know that, I've had jobs, 15 weeks, no results, YOU'RE OUT *does heave ho type motions with elbow*"

That's what I love about him, he's like this shrivelled adolescent troll whose attitude is "I'm in the shit....and I'm dragging you all in with me"

Ronan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 09:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Very exciting! Just remember, you can walk away right up to the last minute.

Amen! V scary stuff altogether. A lot of work re. letting more light in needs to be done. It's all a bit mad!

I have heard that Dunphy is quite fey in his movements irl. My friend said that if you didn't know who he was you'd think he was 'of the other' (ooo stop it you bitch etc.). I have walked by him near Mountpleasant in Ranelagh. He is tiny.

Ronan otm re. Dunphy & in the shitedness

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 10:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I was trying to think of a way of answering rumpie's "one shot" thread and I just put myself on a downer :(

Fuck thinking.

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 11:08 (sixteen years ago) link

He's not that fey when he's hammered - he nearly knocked me to the ground while staggering out of the Spar on Baggot Street a few years ago.

Old Rottenhat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 11:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I tell you what, his interview programme on Saturday morning on the radio is the most BORING show imaginable. Hasn't everyone in Ireland been interviewed or profiled in one way or other by now?

Eucch, I think I need to leave the country.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:27 (sixteen years ago) link

It is very boring tis true.

Hello Old Rottenhat. New here?

I believe I have a surveyor. Is €460 too much for a survey?

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Have you asked a few? It seems a little high, but it's a few years since I bought a property, so I don't know.

You have met Old Rottenhat.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I have? When?

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

It does seem high :( Think I'll spend lunch calling around now.

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

That said, he's already appointed and contacting the agent. ARGH THE STRESS!

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

In the Long Hall a few months ago, and then again in Smyths after the Glenn Branca thing down in the docks. I will confess that Old Rottenhat is not the name on my birth cert.

Old Rottenhat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Hello Old Rottenhat. New here?

Is this the point where the two Lohans bump into each other at summer camp?

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh hi! How was the Potter launch? Did you end up killing the security escort? (xpost)

Rock, I don't get it.

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:57 (sixteen years ago) link

You guys tell me if this is weird: Pat Fordice, the former First Lady of Mississippi, died a few weeks ago -- and her estate is being liquidated at a public auction this Sunday.

xpost -- I don't get it either, I haven't had any coffee yet and I'm on autopilot.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 12:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Doesn't sound weird to me. Maybe they are broke?

kv_nol, Thursday, 13 September 2007 13:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Marquis de Sade! So good they named him twice!

Do people actually read AND enjoy his writings? I read a few pages and it seemed extremely MEH.

nathalie, Thursday, 13 September 2007 13:01 (sixteen years ago) link

The football has Onimoed me though I'm happy for all you how had a good night with it. I envy the pub drinking, but not a weeknight! Your constitution's are stronger than mine.

Still waiting for what FOB is.

Must stay off ILx today am in serious red zone.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 13 September 2007 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Full Of Bullshit? Friends of Bill?

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 13:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Red zone?

nathalie, Thursday, 13 September 2007 13:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Nath, I doubt very much that de Sade is read and enjoyed by anyone very much. I'd say he's up there with some of the world's other great purchased-but-never-read authors.

That said, he's already appointed and contacting the agent. ARGH THE STRESS!

In that case don't worry about it. Dude, really, save the stress for when the paperwork starts. This is the easy part.

Rock, I suspected Full Of Bullshit as well. I never heard it before, but.
