two months pass...

hi everybody. here's what happened.

last thursday i was driving in a pretty shitty part of LA (east santa ana) when i saw this stray dog running back and forth across a busy five-lane road. i was surprised because it wasn't really a residential area. i went around the block and i saw that as soon as he made it safely across the street he would run back in the other direction. he was literally zigzagging through SUVs.

anyway i pulled over and ran out into traffic and he ran away from me into some bushes. after about 45 minutes and with the help of 5 or 10 passerby, my girlfriend managed to coax him out of the bushes and into her arms.

he's a really beautiful dog and he has neither collar nor microchip. the people at the pound and the animal control officers urged us to take him home, so here we are. he seems really depressed so we wonder if he wasn't trapped in some sort of horrible thing like an underground breeding ring (he still has his balls and seems to not have had much socialization). he basically just sits on our laps with that traumatized look for 10 hours a day. he doesn't like to not be touching one of us and when one of us goes in the shower he stands at the door and whines. he won't walk on a leash anywhere that isn't the inside of my warm, safe, apartment because i think he's scared. he literally shivers with fear when he hears barking dogs. so i am basically starting to feel like i've adopted an infant.

but, there's some progress. he finally started wagging his tail like a real dog on sunday and playing with toys yesterday. at this rate we should have him chasing a stick by 2012 and housebroken by 2015.

so, yeah, life happens. sorry i abandoned my project and sorry if it led to a bit of stress. i still have my notes on my four albums and i think i'll just wait for another turn next week or for the conversation to pick up.

Aw, he is adorable! My parents have a black & tan mini dachshund, and she is one quality pup. I hope your little dude stops acting less neurotic & more trustful. What is his name? Are you going to get him fixed?

Submit him to Cesar The Dog Whisperer! He'll know what to do.

'ello baba! <---- how I seem to greet dogs lately.

winston burchill (suzy), Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

his name is santiago de chicharron (santiago the fried pork rind).

we want to get him "fixed" (and "(house)broken", funny juxtaposition of terms) but we don't want to pile trauma on top of trauma so we're consulting with vets about if and when to do it. his behavior is still evolving on a day-to-day basis so we want to give him a bit of time ...

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 26 August 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

that dog is so cute

markers, Thursday, 26 August 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

FWIW even the most well-adjusted dachshunds have a rep for being difficult to potty train. I am rooting for little Santiago!

sharkless dick stick (Abbbottt), Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Housetraining shouldn't be too traumatic for him if it's done the proper way. In fact, it might give him a routine and a sense of stability because it consists of easily learned behaviors. Whenever we have new dogs in the house I use the Dogstar Daily Errorless Housetraining Method, which works really well. The hard part is getting the dog used to being penned or crated.

(I am sorry for telling you this if you already know this.)

Has anyone you talked to been able to estimate how old he is?

crating pups makes me sad.

not trying to open debate on the crating issue but man i've seen a few neglected doggies in crates and it just braeks my <3 ;__;

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, crating him makes me sad too but i don't have a whole lot of options right now. we're moving this month from an apartment to a house with a secluded, fenced backyard so hopefully he can chill there while we're at work, and then when we're potty trained he can just hang wherever he likes.

he's certainly not neglected when we're not at work. all he wants to do is curl up and chill next to us on the couch or bed. he hasn't barked yet - though he whines a little bit - and he loves to be held like a baby and carried around. he's basically just a little stuffed animal, all he wants is to be loved.

his main problem with potty is that he's so scared of the universe that he refuses to go outside. he will literally hold it outside until he gets inside. part of the problem is that i live in a part of san diego that has a really high concentration of unmarried couples (young and same-sex) so there are a million and one dogs. literally you can't stand outside our place in the afternoon for five minutes without a dog passing by.

anyway the good news is that he's so small that it's not really a big deal when he drops the cosbys inside. there's a maltese poodle in our complex who is about half his size and that's complicating the issue. it's just a little embarrassing because i'm constantly carrying out little piss-soaked towels and bags of poop to bury in the yard in the hopes that he'll start to think it's part of his territory. on the other hand, maybe he'll think it's a big game?

oh, and judging by the teeth it seems like he's a little more than three years old.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

FWIW my dog is a totally afraid of the world-type dog (we got her from a shelter) and she seems to really love her crate. We only put her in there when we're gone, but she goes in there of her own accord whenever she is feeling freaked out. Maybe she used to live with someone who had her in a crate, I don't know, but it really seems to comfort her when she's scared.

yeah Henry really digs his crate - if you approach it the right way it doesn't have to be a prison or anything, more of a sanctuary really. key part here is to never ever use the crate as a time out or bad dog training substitute, that will fuck it up for sure.

not heard that expression in years

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 27 August 2010 00:12 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i mean half the time when we are on the bed the little dude all the way under the down comforter digging in circles and rearranging it to make himself a little cave sit in, which if you think about it, is sort of what a doghouse is, and a crate is basically just a portable doghouse with a lockable door on it. we always put a bunch of toys and snuggly fabric pieces and treats in there with him and i think he just thinks of it as a safe place to chill where he's out of sight of predators or whatnot.
