He's got that wig on, and I read a post on Keytars and Violins saying they say an Ayhun live set and that it was actually Olof. But now I feel like a dick because clearly he didn't want this project to be associated with the Knife, hence the total anonymity.

Also awesome: The promotional language for his releases.

From the Oni Ayhun website describing OAR 003:

Discover steep, rugged canyons, painted rock minarets, desert vistas framed by blooming wildflowers, soaring raptors and singing canyon wrens on the wildest remaining rivers. Join this amazing journey composed of quiet floating as well as exciting whitewater rapids. Search for birds including both the zone-tailed and gray hawk, elegant trogon, elf and whiskered screech owls, and eight species of hummingbird. Enjoy dazzling flower displays, and observe an astounding concentration of nesting raptors. Drink in spectacular canyon vistas. Watch elk, deer, bighorn sheep-and ranchers at work-in this rugged habitat. Enjoy the relaxed pace of a free-flowing river with few rapids, stunning scenery, interesting geology and rich natural history. Search for grizzly bear, wolf, awe-inspiring herds of migrating caribou, and arctic birds in full breeding plumage that travel thousands of miles to nest here. Through the foothills and across the coastal plain. Cruise the wild islands and coastlines. From Humboldt penguins to hundreds of macaws and parrots gathering daily at the world’s largest-known clay lick in the Amazon, you will encounter a plethora of bird species each day. Witness seabirds, walrus, sea otter, Arctic fox and bear-and ceremoniously cross the Arctic Circle. Impressive landscapes-from pristine coves and beaches to expansive tundra and soaring mountains-serve as photogenic backdrops to this remarkable adventure.

001-A has an incredible rhythm. If you follow the high end rhythmic patterns the beat seem kinda groovy and laid back but if you follow the kick drums, it has an intense, propulsive feel. It's pretty great. Reminds me of hearing Luciano for the first time.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 18 December 2009 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link

That track is just so goddam powerful. The bizzare fusion-jazzesq synth line, the half time dubby bass kick, the faster house kick rhythm underneath. I hear where you're coming from with the Luciano comment, but the only music that I can really link Ayhun's tracks too is the Knife. There's something expressed in the style that is at once deeply human and integral while also totally alienating and distant. For all of the derivative elements in Deep Cuts, Silent Shout, and these tracks, there is something about them that makes them sound like nothing else.

If all DJ sprinkles stuff is technically 2008, I guess that just makes OAR003B the best track of the year :)

(and curse everyone who bought it up on forced exposure before I could!)

^^^only listened to it 3 times but i'm prepared to say it's an instant classic and one of the best house records i've heard in years. almost brought a tear to the eye.

I admit that it's a great record. One that makes me orgasm musically. But somehow, I don't see playing it again a year or even months from now..

yeah, but who cares, though.

I'd argue there's something here that exceeds your average grindhouse tool or nesrib or whathaveyou. And it doesn't seem like it's easy to put into sets in the first place.

This part of the sentence is even dumber. (lukas), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 13:06 (fourteen years ago) link

One of the things I love about this track is the "live" feel, which I assume I'm getting mostly from the reverb on the synths, plus the dissonance between the melody and the bass. Sounds a little like the best minidisc bootleg of all time, and makes me picture somebody with a rack of gear up on a platform - red light, white room - rocking back and forth as he tweaks his controllers and taps out his rhythms.

This part of the sentence is even dumber. (lukas), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Is this poorly worded, or are all of his releases Creative Commons?

what is this "catholic" linked to at the bottom of his website? I wouldn't be surprised about the creative commons, if he was trying to make money from the songs he would've just e-mailed pitchfork and been like "I'm that dude from the Knife" and let them blow him for a while...

Catholic was a sort of avant/disco/rock collab between Patrick Cowley & Jorge Socarras; Stefan Goldmann and Finn Johannssen's Macro label just released it, plus a couple of EPs with remixes from the likes of Morgan Geist, Kink, etc.

OAR004 is out
4-A is a tough listen
4-B is better, nice drum sounds, but still some high-pitched bullshit that makes me wanna cover my ears.
i could see mixing B into something from Achso

so has it actually been "officially" confirmed that this is olof dreijer? i assumed it was, partly because of numerous live performances that have been reported as confirming it. certainly oni ayhun himself is v visible in youtube clips (though that "gotcha!" moment was scuppered by not being 100% sure what olof looks like). anyway olof's pr categorically denied it to me, fwiw.

i havent heard anything official but both 'tomorrow in a year' and the oni ayhun records are released under creative commons, which seems unlikely to be a coincidence with music of this caliber

btw those free tracks are way wild flanged noise jams, dissonant and crunched out stuff that sounds like oldschool industrial noise (maybe Brume or Arcane Device), it's very brave and "out" stuff for sure

i enjoyed his show a lot but yeah it was pretty uncompromising stuff. a lot of the audience drifted off, i guess it became obvious it wasn't gonna start sounding like the knife any time soon. he dropped oar003-b at the end and it was hilarious how smooth it sounded compared to everything else he'd played.

Love this so much, is it too much to dream of a full-length?

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento, LLC", Sunday, 2 July 2023 16:34 (nine months ago) link

Maybe not. When he announced it he said "I've been making music again" not "I mad a track"

there's his recent full-length with Mount Sims "Souvenir" where they explore the sociopolitical ramifications of using steel drum sounds in Western music (!) it's very good but it's not exactly a series of bangers
