shame they gave their finest track such a shit-ugly video

Classic for sure. My favorite Live single and it sort of sounds like Helmet if they were dynamic and not boring. It's been a while but I remember liking the video's coldy executed depiction of a natatorium treated as a cheap motel by a mass of joyless, plain-looking couples.

Dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud. Video's even worse.

Everyone knows that Live only had one great song ,and this really wasn't it.

the appeal of this song TRULY escapes me ... the same way that 50 cent's appeal escapes dan perry or alex. the same goes for live, as well.

I was really into Live in middle school, then this song came out and I was like "fuck these dudes"

my girlfriend was going through my cd collection the other day and pointed out that i own not just throwing copper, not just secret samadhi, but also mental jewelry and even their debut EP, four songs.

she now has the trump card in any future arguments about our collections.

marc h., Monday, 14 March 2005 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I completely forgot Ed had a cameo in Fight Club until I caught a bit of it on F/X the other day.

Anyway, Secret Samadhi might have been the first album I ever bought on release date, but it was definitely the first album I ever regretted purchasing. I wore out a dubbed cassette of Throwing Copper and I liked the guitar in "Lakini's Juice," but Secret Samadhi was so terrible on the whole that I felt personally wronged. I don't think I listened to it much after the first week.

I've been hearing that song on the radio a lot lately. Pure Pearl Jam lite with Ed making sounds that no human should be proud to have created.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 02:27 (nineteen years ago) link

sorry man, it works. The only time their self-importance was even close to merited.

I also like "White: Discussion" OK and the bridge to "I, Alone" is pretty awesome, but besides that "Lightning Crashes" towers miles above the rest of their catalogue.

I'm shocked at the amount of "classic"s in here.

It was Live who paved the way for Creed, who as everyone knows is the devil. So in essence, Live was the antichrist.

yes, but growing up in SE PA, these guys were so dudly they willed themselves classic. they wouldn't stop touring the area! and the mythology surrounding them was ridiculous. every roommate i had in college would tell me something about this band (they useta be skinheads/nazis, you know) - one d00d went so far as to hang a picture of them promoting whatever tour it was in '97 in our room!

haha, yeah, everyone I know who's from a certain part of Pennsylvania seems to have a "we saw Live when they were just getting started" story.

I think the sequence of Throwing Copper singles/videos was:

Selling The Drama -> I Alone -> Lightning Crashes -> White, Discussion

with All Over You somewhere in there as a big radio hit with no video. White, Discussion was the one that I thought was tolerable, at least at first.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

careers like Live's (and Third Eye Blind's, and Hootie & The Blowfish) kind of mystify me, because they have like 4 or 5 big singles off one album, and then can't get a hit as big as any of those after that one album. so they're not really one-hit wonders, but it's like their fame lasts for exactly one album cycle.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah al - i agree, but strangely the marketing for secret samadhi presented them as though they were the new number one band in the world! i recall turning down invitations to see them - i simply didn't get it, even with the local connection (imaginary, you betcha): i thought they were like dave matthews band.

in fact, it's hard to imagine them having been that famous now. also: alanis morrissette to thread (re many hit singles, and then poof!)

it seems naive or short-sighted to imply that it was an especially mid-90's phenomenon, but it really seems like it was, doesn't it?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it's a 70s & 80s phenomenon, too (though probably more 80s than 70s) (and more new-wave than anything else I can recall) (though maybe some R&B acts fall into this ditch, too).

StanM, Tuesday, 21 February 2023 22:54 (one year ago) link

so thoughts after reading this:

*Tynes talks a lot of shit for someone with a demon's resume
*How could you file bankruptcy 5 times in an 8 year span when a Chapter 11 takes 7 years to discharge
*The fucking Charlotte Hornets's owner's kid was their temporary lead singer for a few years...lol
*it's kinda not shocking that Ed just fired everyone and went on with hired guns. there's very little distinct about the bass, guitar playing, and drumming in this band, they sort of live or die by his vocals and songwriting (for better or worse). this isn't like Slayer changing drummers and having a different feel rhythmically, very plug and play.
*Taylor seems naive to a ridiculous degree and he was a dick for what he did to his other bandmates in taking a larger cut
*of course Gracey is a Trumper
*Ed seems to let Hynes way too far off of the hook because of his anger at Taylor

Back in the 1990s I went on a summer trip bringing together different high schools. One of the participants was Ed Kowalczyk’s sister. Some Live fans kept hovering around her, expecting her to give insights into Kowalczyk’s lyrics, even though she was years younger than her famous brother and probably wouldn’t know anything.

But I still remember decades later that these fans raved around Throwing Copper, but whenever the conversation turned to Secret Samadhi (then the most recent release), they seemed confused and somehow disappointed by the album.

I've had "Selling the Drama" (I think that's what it's called) playing non-stop in my head the last couple of days since reading that rolling stone article. These songs are so annoyingly catchy and this is reminding me why I got rid of "Throwing Copper" about a year after buying it (one of a handful of CDs I ever sold)

silverfish, Friday, 24 February 2023 17:07 (one year ago) link

all it took was the article quoting the lyrics "and for christ the cross / and for me the chair". My brain does some dumb shit sometimes.

What was that Throwing Copper-era video where Kowalczyk is singing and grooving with great rockstar chrisma, while the rest of the band look confused at the camera like doofuses?

i associate this band with a friend i had from about 13-15 yo named m!tch. his dad was a software guy who did office-y looking mini wood and wire sculptures on the side - lots of aquamarine speckled with yellow, that sort of thing - dilbert vibes. m!tch and his dad were alright, i went with them to my first concert (dave matthews band lol). i never quite had m!tch's enthusiasm for live though.

key lyrics

We hit a couch, the place was packed
With sweaty palms, sweaty thongs, and sweaty backs
My mouth was dry, my brain cold high, the groove was right, so I decided to ignite
Your eyes met mine, you skirt began to rise, and so did I
Now you know that i took that prize
In the middle of the club, in the middle of the club, in the middle of club
Now tell me!
