"just everyday living was made a pain in the arse at every turn"

perfectly exampled on that disturbing dinner with the family scene.
we feel the same inner tense of the main character, though she doesnt have a word on the script.
perfecrtly shot,great idea.

That dinner scene was brilliant. The way it just held on her face for God knows how long, with all the chatter around her, a crescendo of unsettling inanity.

I thought it was better than The Lives Of Others at portraying the claustrophobia of life under communism.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

i think he was influenced by Chantal Akerman on that scene.and soem others.

Zeno, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:25 (sixteen years ago) link

right.
"life of others" was, esp. at the annoying end, more hollywooded styled movie.
4 months, is super realistic, and thats why more effective to understand.

I want to see but am having a hard time making myself go as well, it's playing on directv pay-per-view but I was more in the mood for Mr. Woodcock last night. one of those things I'll get distracted from if i don't sit my ass in a theater

Honestly, it's really gripping.

Alba, Monday, 28 January 2008 01:34 (sixteen years ago) link

it's a 100% art house movie.
keep that in mind before you go, and it will be easier to keep the patience

two weeks pass...

Really well handled.

They should show this as a double bill with Juno.

Really quite funny in places too.

ten years pass...

surprised there are no other threads on ilx for Cristian Mungiu

Graduation on the surface is mundane, but it is such a dense, loaded film

Dan S, Thursday, 24 January 2019 03:19 (five years ago) link

with a protagonist desperately wanting to save his child from a diminished life, enduring indignities and compromise. There is a sense of something looming, an unnamed resentment or malevolence in the surrounding community reminiscent of The White Ribbon (a film which shares a major cast member with this)

Dan S, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:34 (five years ago) link

a graduation from innocence

Dan S, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:53 (five years ago) link

low level threats, rocks through windows, smashed windshields, “I’ll talk to them” corruption, "may I ask you a favor?"
