This is actually why I still rip shit as MP3 rather than M4A, because if some other company decides to take up the massive capacity angle, I want my files to be able to play on it. I sense Apple might not be going higher capacity for a while.

You can always dl a free converter , anyway.

I've only used this once, but it did work.

I can't believe Phil or anyone would say that Isa is the best Enslaved record. Does not compute.

Nate Carson, Monday, 14 December 2009 23:05 (fourteen years ago) link

No, it don't.
Alas, they were touring on it the only time I heard them live.
It did make for a nifty tee for my wife, though.

* METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH AND ANTHRAX TO PERFORM TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY *

* THE BIG FOUR CONFIRMED FOR SONISPHERE POLAND AND CZECH REPUBLIC *

* MORE BIG FOUR APPEARANCES AT SONISPHERE SHOWS PLANNED *

The world wide web has been abound with speculation on a possible “BIG FOUR” tour for several months. Now, SONISPHERE can exclusively reveal that METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX will play together for the first time in history, in a move that will have metalheads across the globe frenzied with excitement.

Says LARS ULRICH/METALLICA of this historic announcement:
"Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's big 4 would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time...what a mindfuck! Bring it on!"

“It's about fucking time this happened,” said SLAYER’s KERRY KING. “and about time the fans finally get what they want. This is fucking awesome.”

ANTHRAX guitarist SCOTT IAN agrees, commenting on the enormity of the announcement.

“People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984. That's twenty-six years of expectation!!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them!! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if The Beatles, Stones, The Who and Zeppelin had done shows? Or Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that's how big I feel this is.”

was really bummed when Apple discontinued the classic line.

Except that they haven't. The latest revision (160GB) was just released this past September.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 12:03 (fourteen years ago) link

On revision, I see that you meant the even larger ones. Yes, it's a shame - but when flash memory gets even smaller and cheaper, which won't belong, I think we'll see a return to bigger capacity models.

Now, back to the metal.

Does anyone know the name of the dude with afro who has been doing backing vocals (and keyboards) for Om on the recent tour?

Doran, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 12:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Rob Lowe apparently. My, he's changed.

Doran, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 12:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh noes, another Rob Lowe?

I wonder if Anthrax will get Belladonna to do the Big Four thing and kick out John Bush yet again.

glad to hear I'm not the only one that gets weird looks when they say their ipod is full. (I'm workin w/a miniscule 80gb one tho.)

original bgm, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:18 (fourteen years ago) link

The guy performing with OM is the dude who also performs as Lichens (as a one-man act I think). He opened for Boredoms in NYC this year, just him with a mic and effects. I thought it was fantastic, kind of like vocal Frippertronics with a muezzin/medieval polyphony tinge.

The guy performing with OM is the dude who also performs as Lichens

He's also in the 90 Day Men and sang with guys from US Maple in a band called Singer.

Oh wow, Lichens and Om could be pretty cool.

I predict that Megadeth will wipe the floor with the competition at that festival btw

That Singer album wasn't bad

an hesher (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Phil's list is great thus far, real diverse and personal and all those things that happen when you do not submit your list to a greater hivemind.

Except I hate that Dir en Grey record. And Dir en Grey. It's an irrational hate, but I have heard that specific album and it resembles a much-less-good Lateralus, which is an achievement in some sense.

Anyway, this is what spending your freshman year around increasingly distorted anime fans will do to you.

If you like Dir en Grey (and I do, a lot), check out the new album Now, by girugamesh. Least-metal metal album-cover I've seen all year, maybe, but after two listens I'm having to think about maybe shoehorning it into my metal top-10 somehow.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 17 December 2009 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

The thing about Om is that everyone's banging on about the difference between Chris Haikus and Emil Amos. And while the latter's percussive drumming couldn't be more different from the former's almost thuggish attack, this flip in styles has been a massive smokescreen for the actual important change in style, which is Al Cisneros' bass playing, which, live at least, has gone all fucking fiddly and jazz-lite and indulging in ridiculous classic rock aping builds.

The guy from Lichens is a good idea but it doesn't work. They don't need more new age elements added to the sound.

They're already called Om for fuck's sake.

Doran, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:09 (fourteen years ago) link

kind of wish everyone in Shrinebuilder would ditch their current projects and go forth with that one.

richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I second that.

ha this dude worked (works?) at the video store around the corner from my old apartment, he seemed like a cool guy

Shrinebuilder was nothing special.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

That's pure insanity. Shrinebuilder are one of the few current metal bands who make tracks live up to their preposterously awesome song titles.

Doran, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, not one of the few but they're in the minority for sure.

Doran, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

they were pretty awesome live. haven't listened to the album much.

original bgm, Thursday, 17 December 2009 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I liked the album, but it definitely wasn't best-of-year for me by any means.

And seconded on Girugamesh. I just discovered them this week on a J-rock download blog I visit from time to time.

Oh man: new Rotting Christ album to include a Diamanda Galas cover that incorporates the vocal from her version.

Shrinebuilder was nothing special.

thx i'll keep that in mind.

richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:13 (fourteen years ago) link

its ok, i dont hate it, i just dont think its amazing or anything.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i agree that it's not amazing, but i like it and listen to it a fair amount. my favorite part of the whole album is the first time it gets all Om-y in the first track. the songs are catchy and it seems like it would be a great album to get stoned to.

richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 17 December 2009 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I second that.

Phil: Happy birthday buddy!

Nate Carson, Friday, 18 December 2009 00:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I was just busting his chops. Happy birthday, dude!

(Also, Converge are kind of the odd band out on that bill, so that's not a great example. Kind of like when I saw King's X sandwiched in between Hammerfall and Dio.)

xpost - Converge sank like a stone on this bill. And I'm a fan from way back.

Nate Carson, Friday, 18 December 2009 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought their set was terrific. Bannon was all "RARR ARR ARR ARR" and doing weird Nazi-like arm gestures; it was hilarious. I couldn't make out a single word of any song.
