OK, this is the thread to ask for suggestion if you're in doubt of whether it's worth to spend some bucks or/and travel miles away to see a DJ.

I'll start. What do you think of Joakim, Diplo, and 2 Many DJ's? All of them will be playing in my country in span of 9 days.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

All of them are worth seeing. Depends how far away you have to travel. I'd suggest 2 Many DJs if you've never seen them live. It'll be fun, but very populist.

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

If I don't like Steve Aoki or Erol Alkan, would I enjoy 2 Many DJ's? Because from snippets I heard, they play similar stuff.

What can I expect from a Joakim set?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:03 (fourteen years ago) link

2 Many DJs are approximately 8 millions times more artful and clever than Aoki, and are currently touring with a live video show, not just playing CDs.

Joakim will probably play some wonky space-disco, some real disco, and some odd glitchy stuff.

I quite enjoyed Joakim's RA Podcast from around 3 years back and when i saw him play live with his band he just killed. I don't know what he DJ sets are like these days, but, even as someone who wouldn't give the idea of seeing Diplo or 2MJ's half a thought, I endorse Joakim.

EDB, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe I'll skip Diplo and 2 Many DJ's and see Joakim instead.

Tim Sweeney, how good is he?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 18 December 2009 13:45 (fourteen years ago) link

saw him last year and it was tons of fun. no surprises, lots of house and disco classics plus some more recent stuff, kind of like a greatest hits set for ppl who like 'that kind of music.' if you dig his radio show you'll love it.

jabba hands, Friday, 18 December 2009 14:42 (fourteen years ago) link

he is very nerdy as he rocks out behind the decks, which is refreshing in comparison to the usual too-cool europeans

jergins, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

lol

all these dudes are good, check out a few mixes to get an idea of what to expect. crowd, venue and yourself will always play a big role in how good your night is anyway.

like the idea behind this thread anyway

andy blake, benetti, juan maclean have all rocked it for me recently. really psyched about seeing someone like villalobos again, he's totally killed it everytime i've seen him, haven't seen him at fabric before, looking forward to that.

doobie bros, "long train running"

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Monday, 28 December 2009 03:59 (fourteen years ago) link

the 2ManyDJs "live" video show, it turns out, they've been asking promoters not to bill as live - to no avail out here! But they've scanned hundreds of record sleeves from their own collections, and had custom animations made from them, and are now mixing these off DVD-Js.

Audrey Wetherspoons (sic), Monday, 28 December 2009 05:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Mutek organized night tonight with Alex Smoke,

Pros include: I'm an Alex Smoke fan and I have no idea as to what he's been up to for the last year and a half.
Vincent Lemieux is DJ'ing
It's only $5 and a good crowd and good sound is in order.

Cons: I've seen Alex Smoke twice and I also have no idea as to what he's been up to in the last year and a half.
I really don't feel like going out (and I'm not going out for New Years either).

The other plus is Vinvent Lemieux is DJ'ing.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Earlier today I was actually thinking about when I saw Prins Thomas, a set that would altimately become a certain Resident Advisor Podcast (in particular I was recalling how the man yelling "Boh! Boh! Boh!" - clearly audible on the podcast I might add - was largely inappropriate).

EDB, Sunday, 3 January 2010 02:08 (fourteen years ago) link

haha, it makes the podcast sounds "lively" though.

how about sasse, people?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 08:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Sasse is probably a good bet.

Just for fun I decided to compare one year (2009) in Toronto vs. one weekend in Berlin. Taken only from Resident Advisor's listing pages, taking the appropriate names (techno, house, dubstep and the like DJ's, that I know of, and whom I've deem not bad enough to go out of my way to avoid - although I wouldn't give half of the Toronto names listed half a thought at best, many of them playing at atrocious clubs anyways).

Doubles and Resident DJ's are taken out.
Either way

TORONTO:

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 28 January 2010 06:38 (fourteen years ago) link

funny living in berlin, it all becomes so passe... so much happens here it's impossible to get excited about even 1/10th of it, and shows that i would have jumped up and down at finding out about 3 years ago, these days i'm like "yeah it's only 5 subway stations away but i'm kinda tired" a lot of it is just me having checked out so much good stuff already and like, how many transcendent narcotic experiences on the dance floor can you have before it gets redundant? it's easy to go from all night club to all day afterhour to club again and stay out for 2 weeks while you completely lose touch with reality here, but now it feels like going through the motion for me. and i'd rather geek out in the studio and watch a movie with my girl...

with that said, Transmediale is under way, and i'll be seeing Charlemagne Palestine, Thomas Köner, Pan Sonic, Ryoji Ikeda, Brackles, Rustie, Deadbeat, Tikiman, ATOM tm. :)

i'm a fan but what type of stuff does he play out? is it worth the $20?? (fwiw i am a huge fan of 'temporary secretary' and his RA mix and 'the grandfather paradox', just wondering how well that style translates to a live dj set)

He was very good when I say him in Berlin, played a very broad range of house for about 6 or 7 hours - and we were grinning from ear to ear when he dropped West End Girls towards the end.

Just saw the Hawtin "Beyond EDM" tour, Hawtin was fine. The real disappointment was Kevin Saunderson.

Way too pounding and tracky for my tastes, especially for how early in the night it was.

Gaiser was surprisingly pretty good, better than Hawtin.

xp I've seen Ben UFO three times and it's been completely different each time - a boring time probably in that same one dimensional techno vein, a great time in the adventurous way you'd expect of him, and a really weird time when after hours of supports throwing out filthy dubstep he came on, cleared the floor with a couple of really skeletal tracks, then gave up and let someone else take over.
