I find it sort of hilarious how big electrohouse seems to be getting in the US.
Between Ke$ha and David Guetta and La Gaga, its as big as it was in Europe in 07.
Love that Ke$ha song BTW, and I don't know why.

i don't know why either

I think it may be the incredibly snotty way she says "brushed my teeth with a bottle of Jack".
Maybe its that I've been to too many house parties that are exactly like that song.

has anyone else heard that Justin Bieber (sp) song One Time? I assumed this 10 year old lesbian looking kid was only getting play on Radio Disney or whatever but I finally looked him up on Youtube and I've been hearing that song for months. Pretty great song, reminds me of Jojo.

it's corny as hell but it's not a bad tune at all imo (dream stan, lol)

with the year done and dusted, I think we can conclude that Girls' Generation's "Gee" is the best pop single released in the past 12 months. actually, this was clear the moment it was released

Adding to that, this is my favorite big soft ballad of the year:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Bg-zxWCII
Slightly obsessed with it. I even like the concept of the lyrics (once translated) -- the lyrics themselves are perhaps nothing new, but the background story makes the meeting between these two extra sweetly sentimental. One Year Later, now that's a good song title.

thats an old-ass song -- pretty sure it came out last year

maybe earlier. it sounds like a bit of "she cant love you"

you're right - 2 years old. it's being released for the first time in the UK in January tho (the Robyn factor, sort of).

my point was that keri hilson isnt on lady gaga's level, as an example
― unicorn strapped with a unabomb (deej), Sunday, December 20, 2009 1:31 PM Bookmark
i dunno, obv keri isn't nearly as good of a pop star-qua as gaga, but please do tell me when gaga does a song nearly as good as "turnin' me on"

yeah agreed -- but that wasnt even my point, im just talking about in terms of pure popularity, gaga's a superstar

whatever dudes. top ten single of the year vs mediocrity
― dyao mak'er (The Reverend), Monday, 21 December 2009 00:54 (fourteen years ago) link
I mean, it's cool to like lady gaga now and all, but lets not kid ourselves
― dyao mak'er (The Reverend), Monday, 21 December 2009 00:55 (fourteen years ago) link
i guess you'd get more sympathy if you said hilson was a better artist. her shit is consistently decent-to-good; gaga's is either awful or amazing, & imo "bad romance" is a higher high than "turnin me on" (which i like)
― dumb pl4nk (k3vin k.), Monday, 21 December 2009 00:58 (fourteen years ago) link
i dont think my point had anything to do w/ personal preference. gaga is clearly a 'bigger deal' in pop culture, both artists have had some great songs & forks lumping them in w/ jay sean & flo rida was what i was disagreeing with -- that group of artists was on some apples to oranges to bananas to orangutans shit
― deej, Monday, 21 December 2009 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link
I don't think she's generally a very good artist, though. I guess most of her songs are at least decent in isolation (except "Knocks You Down", fuck that song imo), but they all feel so disconnected from each other that it feels like there's no larger point to her. Since her personality is basically completely different on any given song, it all adds up to a personality as indiscernable as if she didn't display any personality anywhere. I've used this phrase elsewhere to describe her, but she's chameleonic to a fault. That said, "Turnin' Me On" just works completely on its own terms.
Lady Gaga, on the other hand, has a consistent persona, and thus seems much easier to latch onto as person. This is a very important thing to superstardom, that fans be able to discern you against your competition and have a set of expectations that can be confirmed or subverted. I just don't like any of her songs as much. ("Paparazzi" is my favorite single of hers so far, and that's more of an "I like it" than an "I love it".)
― dyao mak'er (The Reverend), Monday, 21 December 2009 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link
I like "Turnin' Me On" and was really excited about it when it first dropped, but it really is not that great when you get down to it imo.
― some dude, Monday, 21 December 2009 01:47 (fourteen years ago) link
I would've agreed with all your points about Gaga before hearing "Bad Romance," kinda have to adjust all my gripes about her to some degree now that she has a song I love.
― some dude, Monday, 21 December 2009 01:48 (fourteen years ago) link
I intended all my points about Gaga to be more or less neutral (other than not liking her songs as much, but that's just completely my opinion and unimportant to what else I was saying about her), so I'm not sure how liking a song of hers or not affects them.
― dyao mak'er (The Reverend), Monday, 21 December 2009 01:58 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah as much as i'm more predisposed to liking hilson, i kind of have to admit that there's a lot more point to gaga as an artist. and tbh gaga probably has more songs i really love now, what with her upping her game considerably on the fame monster.
― lex pretend, Monday, 21 December 2009 02:15 (fourteen years ago) link
"turnin' me on" is still really great though

Where's the 2010 pop thread?
― curmudgeon, Saturday, 9 January 2010 19:03 (fourteen years ago) link
I figure someone who listens to pop more than me should start the 2010 thread. I listen to r'n'b/rap radio more than pop and only ocassionally read the US Billboard pop chart (and rarely ever the UK one or others).

you guys should do this again, it was a fun read last year.

The Sean Kingston single from last year was okay but I much prefer him in puppy love mode (e.g. "Me Love") to Fire Bun mode, and I felt ambivalent re its unmistakeable Black Eyed Peas influence.
