pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i won't vote in it, but i'll complain about the thread. how's that?

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

its usually those who dont vote that complain about the results

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I'll vote just so Scott can complain. And Phil too, because YOB is my favorite album this year.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't vote in decibel's year-end poll. just the decade one. i was too obsessed with my noise/experimental column and all the stuff i was getting for that this year. so i didn't want to make a list that was 15 weird non-metal albums and five metal albums. didn't seem appropriate. uh, long story short, i wasn't keeping my eye on the metal ball this year.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

will totally vote in ILX metal poll this year

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

scott you said that last year!!!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway youre welcome to vote for noise if you want to.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

frontrunners for me this year must be Cobalt,Yob,Converge,Baroness,Krallice and probably a lot more when i actually get round to think about it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

did i say that last year?

i think last year i was having a nervous breakdown and hating my job as a hospital custodian and that's why i didn't vote LAST year. totally different circumstances.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

nah you said you hadnt listened to much metal last year so you didnt vote.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link

that onion list is kind of strangely constructed, but the streaming album player allowed me to catch up on a few things i'd never heard. i'm liking that goatwhore album a lot--could anyone tell me how it stacks up to their other stuff?

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Ask Phil - he loves him so Goatwhore.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:58 (fourteen years ago) link

phil if u read this pls. post abt goatwhore

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean don't get me wrong, in any year i listen to at least 100+ new metal albums but i don't always hear the greatest stuff out there. i vow to illegally download more in the new year.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Did you check Phil's MSN column today? http://music.msn.com/superfans/heavy-metal/blog/the-year-end-and-decade-end-lists-begin/

I'm just poking because of these two quotes:

"YOB are doom. Doom is boring."

"Goatwhore are a terrible, boring black metal band whose appeal is utterly inexplicable to me. Otherwise smart friends of mine swear by them but their albums send me diving for the eject button."

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link

well then

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Scott I am real glad you are not having a nervous breakdown at a miserable job this year! U my boo.

five minutes of iguana time (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

phil is such a cranky old man. for a young man. he'll make a great old man someday.

i'm glad too, jon!

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:08 (fourteen years ago) link

listening to the new brown jenkins album now. brown jenkins is great stoned. was a big fan of the first album and not so much the last one. this one is, um, similar to the 2nd one so far.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

haha, is phil the dr. morbs of the metal thread?

saw this quote in the onion article:

Lifeā€¦The Best Game In Town features a truly hilarious cover...

am I missing something? what exactly is hilarious about it? the killers poster?

original bgm, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

(all love btw, phil.)

original bgm, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:14 (fourteen years ago) link

and I'll vote in the metal poll. blut au nord is #1. no doubt about it.

original bgm, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't get what's so great about Goatwhore myself I must say

19349 things paedophiles like to complain about (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Brown Jenkins' new one sounds like the closest I've ever heard to Cthulhu awakening from his slumber, and he has a really great grasp on building intensity via feedback and guitar, but around 45 minutes in I was kind of hoping for a little more diversity, which never came. Until then, though, it's pretty sweet.

Van Slyke Paidbreed (J3ff T.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link

weirdest album i've gotten lately is this new thing from one of the dudes in Incantation. sounds exactly like jesu. like, exactly. like, if you played it for someone and said it was new jesu they would probably believe you. which makes it hard to listen to cuz the whole time you are playing it you can't help but think: man, this REALLY sounds like jesu.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

there is a song called "Heroes and Villains" on the new Vreid album and i totally forgot to make a Beach Boys joke in my review of the album! man, i really am getting old.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

but not grumpy?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

you know what's really cool? this bruce gilbert reissue i got in the mail. not metal though. and i like it a lot more than the new bruce gilbert album.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

im kinda surprised the isis album was no10 in the decibel list. Even if the album got better reviews than the last one and stuff, i havent really heard people talking about it since. So i played it earlier and i realised it really is a good album. So if you havent played it in a while i think you should all go spin it (if you dont hate isis obviously)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm having a listening party today. gotta get thru all the junk piling up. azaghal album on moribund is not a keeper.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

i've got nothing against isis. i do know that i don't need that much isis in my life though.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:50 (fourteen years ago) link

scott how did you like the vreid album? its been a bit of an obsessive listening thing for me since seeing them at heathenfest

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:50 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess i could just look up your review to answer my own question huh

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:51 (fourteen years ago) link

now playing: Graveworm

graveworm! they've been around a long time. do people still listen to them? they really like death metal now it seems.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i like the vreid album. i actually really like when they stick some mournful 80's thrash solo in the middle of a song for no reason. it sounds cool when they do it.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't hate this graveworm album!

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

weird! my friend mary came in to the store - i sell her handmade art cards - and i was blasting Graveworm and i turned it down when she came in and she said: "oh you don't have to turn it down my son is in a metal band i don't mind this music." turns out her son is the drummer in Tombs! they are touring europe right now. i told her if they ever wanted to play in the store to let me know! hahaha!

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

man, you know what really made me feel old? the other night i had a show at the store with all these noise people/groups and none of them knew who blixa bargeld was. they were young.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:24 (fourteen years ago) link

What's wrong with Goatwhore? Good, old-fashioned, Celtic Frost rip-off metal...their past albums were always a bit on the plain side, but the recent one blows them all away. I have them pretty darn high on my list.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, me too. That all-guns-blazing Rutan production helps a lot.

Chuffed Wiff Morrisound (Thijs), Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

The addition of the dirty rock 'n roll really made a world of difference, Goatwhore-wise.

Van Slyke Paidbreed (J3ff T.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I just don't like 'em. I like Celtic Frost just fine. Shit, I like Gallhammer and Crucifist. But something about Goatwhore just doesn't work for me. I can't make it through a whole song, and life is too short to keep trying.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:32 (fourteen years ago) link

you really like gallhammer? you are a strange old man.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I preferred Goatwhore to Crucifist, good as that record is. Goatwhore's a lot catchier, the riffs are terrific.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:49 (fourteen years ago) link

this vetus obscurum album is good bm. dude from krohm.

couldn't take the agathodaimon album i had lying around. another blast from the past! their techno beats can't save their tired symphonic bm.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd listen to the last Gallhammer thing ten more times before I fancied playing the last Goatwhore thing again

Awesome story! Tombs' album from this year looks like it is positioning itself to finish high on my year end list, I really like it.

In sorta sad news, one of my few connections for metal CDs close to the house is gone. Hot Topic. I know, I know. But the local one actually carried a lot of Nuclear Blast, Relapse and Century Media stuff that for some reason the Best Buys around here never carry. But now their CD section is reduced to like five "albums of the month" that are all shitty mallcore bands. Blah. Plus it was less than a mile from my house.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:10 (fourteen years ago) link

dude unrelated but did u get my email on solange?

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

not even close to 2009 but... super underrated gorguts album: from wisdom to hate

this stuff always sounds killer when it comes up on shuffle.

that is all.
